1215 A.D.: The reign of King John means dark days for all of England. Not one man, woman, or child lived without fear.
Magnifying this fear is the man they call The Lord of the Shadows - a terrifying figure who sits at the right hand of the King, manipulating the royal moves like a puppet master. The Lord of the Shadows has been known to tear men apart with his bare hands and can, with a snap of his fingers, alter the future of anyone he chooses. The nobility is terrified of him, and for good reason. That is - the nobility that know of his existence.
Lady Sheridan St. James has been drawn into the political arena by her father; having no sons, he bequeaths his power and knowledge to his eldest daughter, a stunningly beautiful and bright creature. Upon his death, Sheridan finds herself at the head of the mighty House of St. James, a major leader in the rebellion against the crown.
During her first visit to London, she becomes acquainted with a massive knight who has, in kindness, saved her sister's life. She has no idea Sir Sean de Lara is the man known as The Lord of the Shadows, but even when she is told of his horrible deeds, she still cannot not believe it. Sheridan and Sean draw close despite the influence of the horrendous affairs of state sweeping London.
All she knows is that he is handsome and kind. Although Sean is well aware of the lady's status, it makes no difference that she is, in perception, his enemy. To Sean, Sheridan is quickly becoming his reason for living. But out of necessity, his responsibilities to the King become stronger than his love for Sheridan and he is forced to perform his duties or risk death to them both.
Still, Sean swears to her that his days as the Shadow Lord are numbered, even as rival factions cruelly separated them. It soon becomes a test of Sean and Sheridan's love to find each other again in a world which is determined to keep them apart.

"Riveting Story - A Keeper For All Time On My Shelf"
I loved how powerful the story was. Sean de Lara, a knight like no other, who is the Shadowed protector of the king. All fear him, as they should. He meets Lady Sheridan St. James, who is heiress to the St. James house. They are technically enemies. The love that grows between these two will squeeze your heart. Around them treachery is abound and some things are not what they seem. Danger and intrigue lurk throughout this story. It is the most powerful medieval story, I have ever read. I have read hundreds. I have cried at times through this story. You will love this story.
In my opinion, it compares to no other. I have read hundreds in this genre.
He is so, so, so multifaceted. He is one of best narrators in the business. You can tell he pours his heart and soul into telling this magnificent story.
Yes, definitely. If sleep did not over take me, I would have tried.
Kathryn Le Veque is, in my opinion, the best writer of this genre. No one comes close. Everyone has their favorites, this author happens to have captivated my heart with the stories she tells.
Yes, I would consider the audio by Brad Wills to be much better than just reading the book. I could not stop listening to it until it was finished. I have never heard another that could use so many different voices as Brad does. He keeps you interested every second. I believe he could read my grocery list and have a voice for every veggie on the list. WONDERFUL!!!
Sean gave up so much of his life to help the people.
Yes I have listened to him before. I have NEVER heard perfection as Brad gives to a book. You can tell he takes great pride in his work . He always gives the very best in every book.
When Sean always tried to protect the women even when the foolish sister Alice tried to get to King John.
Brad Wills is the best I have ever heard. There will never be another that I will listen to. I will buy any Historical Romance that he does and no other.
"Brad Wills is AWESOME!"
Le Veque's Lord of the Shadows is great and I really enjoyed the "many voices" of Brad Wills. Every character's voice is so distinct.
Sean de Lara of course. Brad Wills does the "deep" voice perfectly.
His impersonation of the King was the funniest, but I really enjoyed his voice for Sean de Lara.
Yes, I listened while quilting.
I am currently listening to Le Veque's Guardian of Darkness narrated by Brad Wills. Love it!
Yes and it is because Brad Wills is such an amazing narrator! This is a terrific story in itself, like a medevil love/spy story. When you bring in someone as talented as Wills it is almost as good as closing your eyes and imagining it in a theater.
I enjoyed the antics of Lady Alice, the younger sister of the h, Lady Sheridan. She was such a funny twit! Her actions gave the plot humor, intrigue, danger, she was sooo much fun. I also loved the H, Sean de Lara, he was literally tall, dark, and handsome.
I have heard him once before and have been really impressed, he is truly talented. He brings life to tbe characters in such creative ways- each has his or her own specific characteristics and are easily identified.
True love won't stay in the shadows....
I think this is one of my top 5 audiobooks- I loved it!
"I love the Lord of Shadows"
Oh Yes because the Lord is just sooooo captivating. Best Le Veque novel, it made me fall in love with her writing. Perfect length and very exciting and I just loved the twist of him being a double agent. I would have prefered a more exciting ending that what we had, kind of a let down after the roller coaster of a ride the novel was.
The Lord and his double agent tactics - and the Magna Carta Twist
"What a tangled web we weave"
I like it when kathryn intertwines history and romance together. It's a great combination. Awesome story.
"Best Story by Le Veque & Absolutely Best Narrator"
Enthralling, Passionate, Enjoyable
Sean, the monster whom all fear, & sweet, but independent, Sheridan when they meet for a moonlight walk & talkSean's battle being seriously outnumbered by the King's Guard where Sheridan finds him near deathPlus one other which would be a spoiler so I will not list itAll of these stand out for me. Couldn't pick just one.
Having read most of Le Veque's books & listened to the corresponding audible versions, I have heard many of the narrators. Without a doubt, Mr. Wills tops the list. I could listen to almost anything he narrates. I love the many voices he gives to the characters. I often listen at night so am, especially, pleased with his deep voices, which I find calming. Even when he raises his voice for a particular emphasis, it is not aggravating. He creates great enthusiasm & passion to the written word, making you feel as if you are right there with the character. Mr. Wills truly brings the story to life! He is definitely a master of this craft! I wish he could go back and re-narrate some of Le Veque's books by another narrator. I would help the story so much more! (There are a couple of other narrators of Le Veque's books that I do like but Mr. Wills is still the best in my opinion.)
Sean & Sheridan's conversation when he was so gravely wounded.
Having read most of Le Veque's books, Lord of the Shadows remains my very, very favorite one. From beginning to end, it was engrossing & endearing. I loved Sheridan because she was such a strong, independent woman in a man's world. I loved Sean because he was strong yet so tender with Sheridan (even though he was such a monster under the King's direction). Because of Sheridan, Sean chose a different path in life. While they fell in love quickly (too quickly for those who think logically), their love took root & flourished because of the seemingly insurmountable obstacles which they faced. I have read and re-read this book many times. I love it that much! Another reason that I loved this book was that there were none of Le Veque's explicit sexual descriptions thrown throughout (disgustingly) the book as she does so frequently, making this a true ROMANCE book, not soft porn, in my opinion. There is no question about Le Veque being a very good writer of books such as these. What a shame that she feels she must indoctrinate her readers with her versions of sex, thereby telling us that this is how sex is supposed to be. I grew up a long time ago and am able to figure out what comes next. Don't insult me like this! And, yes, I know. This review will not be posted.
"The beauty and the beast"
Great story, characters were very interesting and story plots were great! Another win by LeVque. Just addicted to Miedevil Romance.
"Brad Wills The Narrator Rocks!!"
Mr. Wills does the most incredible job with this story. Each charactor has a very distinctive and correct in character voice, its really fun and enjoyable listen to. The story of Sir Sean de Lara and Lady Sheridan St. James has intrigue, passion, story twists and is just plain enjoyable. Lady Alice Sheridan's sister is an idiot and causes all kinds of problems but Brad Wills makes the story exciting and a joy to listen to. Sean is called the Shadow Lord and has to do terrible things to stay close to the king and keep his confidence. But is he really evil? You have to read and or listen to to find out. This is a keeper for me. Any other comments would give the story away. But know that Brad Wills does an incredible and wonderful job with the book and you will very much enjoy listening to it. Purchase it you will not be sorry.
"A LOOONNNGGG NOVEL"
I honestly fell asleep while the app was playing on 1.5 speed, so I missed about 71/2 -8 hours of this book pretty much in the middle. Listened for a few minutes as I was waking up and realized I had not missed very much plot. Miss. Le Veque needs a better editor. Brad Wills does his usual awesome job, but Yikes!--it does not need to be so long.
