Polly Waterford is recovering from a toxic relationship. Unable to afford their flat, she has to move miles away from everyone, to a sleepy little seaside resort in Cornwall, where she lives alone above an abandoned shop. And so Polly takes out her frustrations on her favourite hobby: making bread.
But what was previously a weekend diversion suddenly becomes far more important as she pours her emotions into kneading and pounding the dough, and each loaf becomes better and better. With nuts and seeds, olives and chorizo, with local honey (courtesy of local bee keeper, Huckle), and with reserves of determination and creativity Polly never knew she had, she bakes and bakes and bakes.... And people start to hear about it. Sometimes, bread really is life...and Polly is about to reclaim hers.

Light and easy, peppered with romance and highlighting that it is possible to begin again, under your own terms. Anne-Marie Piazza's voice is soothing and articulate - an enjoyable audio book. Loved the puffin too!
The story started out well, but didn't really gain much momentum. It wasn't terrible, but it was just okay. I didn't really identify with the characters and thought they lacked depth.
I liked the narrator, although she wasn't excellent at the American accent for the character of Huckle.
Loved this book! I was hooked from the first chapter and absolutely adored going on journey of laughs, tears and smiles with Polly and all her friends (even the not-so friendly ones).
This is a charming book, which takes some unexpected turns (for a romance). The narrator, whilst fine for the British accents, could not pull off the American accent. However, this is only a minor quibble and I will definitely be purchasing the sequel.
"Great Book, Narration ... not so much"
Magical, Affirming, Gentle
Her accents were honestly terrible. So bad that I cringed. Overall she's not a bad narrator but accents are tough, and this book has Americans and English in it...she probably wasn't the best choice.
Polly. I love a woman who's finding her feet after difficult circumstances.
"Feelgood love story"
I love a feel good love story that also involves food.. I'm a sucker for the cook, eat, love, live type stories and this is one of those with all the ingredients for the perfect storyline. Broken marriage, broken heart, move to another town, a new fling, a new job, a new business built on little money, then a broken heart and a rekindling of a new love.. Ooh yes! Put on your swimsuit, grab a towel, sun cream, hat and a deck chair.. Holiday listening couldn't get better than this.
"Easy listening with an entertaining story"
I enjoyed the different accents, thus think the audio book may have been more entertaining (although I thought the US accent was not so authentic, it was still fun)
Poly Waterfold - a sweet person but still human!
well read - fun, interesting - keeps the audience listening
The owner of the bakery - she's rude and mean and you kind of hope that she turns out to be a nice person in the end - or perhaps the crazy rich American, although he's a bit annoying and perhaps that's why he's memorable.
nice audio for easy listening
"A light Hearted read"
This is the first Jenny Colgan book that I've read and I really quite enjoyed it. I'm glad I didn't read some of the other reviews before or I might have missed out on a good light hearted book.
It is an easy listen to story with a gentle story of love and life and all its ups and downs.
Loved it...quite highly as the story sits with me.
I think the misery of failure was described very well as was the grief/anxiety waiting for the boats strongly told.
she's very good - some of the accents slightly off but I couldn't do better!
yes I had a few tears here & there!
I've enjoyed all these books - the story lines are a little Mills & Boon as they get their strong armed, toned chested young man...but the actual people studies are good - Jenny Colgan is a good story teller and that's what you want when you read/listen to a book...it's to escape and to be entertained! Also there is no graphic sex as per some of the other chick lit books, which I cannot bear!
"A lovely gentle read...."
The Little Beach Street Bakery is the perfect summer read. It combines wonderful visuals of Cornwall alongside heady descriptions of baking aromas. What more could a woman want? Well worth a read and you will soon be heading off to the local supermarket for yeast and strong flour......
The first night alone in the bakery was well described..
She reads with perfect pace...
A mouthwatering literary treat!
"Life changing escape to a remote island"
One of the best I've listen to
One plus One. Quite different in some ways but both have life changes and strong characters
Her character voices
Ummm, something sbout escaping the hum drum life for a simpler more fulfilling one
A lovely listen. Couldn't stop!
"Gentle summer read"
The narrators voice. Very pleasant voice. Hard to find a nice voice like Anne's. I hope she narrates more books
Not sure. Maybe a more complex story line would have been more enjoyable
The first kiss on the island
"Just had to keep listening"
A truly delightful book - The characters the location are all brought to life, loved it! Highly recommend it. Happy listening!
"Beautifully Read Comfort Food!!!"
Lovely warm & snug is how this book made me feel, Jenny Colgan at her best... Loved the recipes at the end, nice touch!
"Brilliant, funny, warming book. Great for relaxing"
Bought this book as a daily deal, which was great as I would never have found it otherwise! It is a thoroughly enjoyable listen with the voices done so well which makes it so escapist.
One of those books that strikes a chord within - who hasn't dreamt of starting afresh when their life collapses around them?
"Feel good read"
Loved this story filled with heartache, laughter and romance didn't want it to end
Great narrator with lovely clear voice
"Light and enjoyable."
I have no idea as I have not read print version.Audio version was excellently narrated though.
lots of memorable moments in whole book hard to say which part more than others
She was very easy to listen to ,a pleasant reading voice that did not try to go over the top with accents.
The part when the boat got lost at sea and...just after -don't want to spoil it and give away spoilers here....
I bought 'Little Beach Street Bakery' as I was looking for a light, easy read on my Kindle and it definitely didn't disappoint. I found myself being pulled into the story and really caring about the characters - it was sad in places, happy in others and made me laugh out loud more than once.
This is a lovely story and has a real feel good factor about it. The main character, Polly, is written about in such a way that you actually begin to care about her and what happens!
This was my first Jenny Colgan novel and I could not have picked a better story. This is the kind of feel-good book you can eat up in one sitting, because the characters and the storyline just flow and mould together so well.
I loved this book, i was swept away by the story and was smiling most of the way through, Pollys life goes from bad to worse from the breakdown of her long term relationship, no longer able to afford the flat she lived in she has no choice but to move away to a sleepy little village in Cornwall where she knows no one and has to live above an abandoned shop in a run down flat. Trying to make the most of her days since there's not a lot going on in the village she picks up a old hobby she used to love which was baking bread. Soon she has all the locals talking and they all want to sample her baking but not everyone is happy about her hobby, mainly her mean looking landlord who happens to be the local baker. This really is a lovely light read with a touch of romance chucked in too, it had me laughing out loud in places, mainly due to her rescued puffin bird which was so cute and funny and my favourite parts of the book. I would recommend to anyone looking for a bit of light hearted escapism.
