Publisher's Summary

Shortlisted for the British Book Awards, Author of the Year, 2007.

For the second time in her marriage, Mariah White catches her husband with another woman, and Faith, their seven-year-old daughter, witnesses every painful minute.

In the aftermath of a sudden divorce, Mariah struggles with depression, and Faith begins to confide in an imaginary friend. At first, Mariah dismisses these exchanges as a child's imagination. But when Faith starts reciting passages from the Bible, develops stigmata, and begins to perform miraculous healings, Mariah wonders if her daughter, a girl with no religious background, might indeed be seeing God.

As word spreads and controversy heightens, Mariah and Faith are besieged by believers and disbelievers alike, caught in a media circus that threatens what little stability they have left. What are you willing to believe? Is Faith a prophet or a troubled little girl? Is Mariah a good mother facing an impossible crisis, or a charlatan using her daughter to reclaim the attention her unfaithful husband withheld?

Building inexorably to a climactic battle for custody, Keeping Faith explores a family plagued by the media, the medical profession, and organised religion in a world where everyone has an opinion but no one knows the truth. Fascinating, thoughtful, and suspenseful, this extraordinary novel is Jodi Picoult at her best: controversial and compelling.

What the Critics Say

"Picoult fans will not be disappointed. There is the usual compulsive writing, the insight into family and colourful characterisation...a pleasure to pick up, and impossible to put down." (Daily Express)

    "A gorgeous book."

I really loved this story despite not usually being a fan of the fiction-meets-religion genre.

There were lots of surprises that had me smiling and wanting more!

The narrator was a little hard to get used to at first but did improve, finally leaving pauses between chapters and character changes towards the end.

    Well worth listening too.

    "keeping faith"

This is a very interesting and well written book but the recording is appalling. The actress reads in a monotone, there is not much difference between the voices, just a non ending drone. What is more, there is absolutely no pause between paragraphs, so one strand of the story blends into another and sometimes I have just lost the tread as i thought one character was speaking when the story had jumped on to another!!! hard to follow and not so relaxing.
