Publisher's Summary

Invictus is a gripping, authentic and exciting audiobook of the Roman army from best-selling author Simon Scarrow. Not to be missed by fans of Conn Iggulden and Bernard Cornwell.

It is AD 54. The soldiers of the Roman army patrol a growing empire from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, from the Atlantic to the banks of the Nile. Rome brutally enforces its rule, and its legions are the most efficient and aggressive fighting force in the world. Two battle-scarred veterans of this army, Prefect Cato and Centurion Macro, have survived years of campaigning in Britannia and have been recalled to Rome.

Their time in the teeming, dangerously political city is short, and soon they are travelling with the Praetorian Guard to Spain, a restless colony where simmering tension in the face of Roman rule is aggravated by bitter rivalry amongst the natives. The challenges that face two old friends and their comrades in arms are unlike any they have seen before - in a land that declares itself unconquerable.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone interested in Roman military history and adventure fiction,

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Keeble’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I am a great fan of Jonathan Keeble. He is a very talented narrator, maintaining an agreeable and steady voice throughout, as well as performing different voices credibly.

    Any additional comments?

Having read many of Scarrow's novels, I must say this is one of the best.

    "Best Scarrow yet"

Still enjoyable, witty and gripping but with new plot and character complexity and an outstanding performance by Jonathan Keeble who brings an extraordinary James Mason back from the dead cameo for the surgeon. Great stuff.

    "Excellent as usual"

These two characters are now part of my annual read, Simon Scarrow has kept them fresh and entertaining for many years and long may it continue, unlike some other authors he continues to find plenty to keep them occupied

"Another brilliant story by Simon Scarrow"

As an avid historical fiction reader, I always look forward to the next iteration of this series and am never disappointed. Simon Scarrow is a master story teller and deserves to be rated alongside Bernard Cornwell.

Glad they moved away from Britain. Began as interesting but was beginning to get boring. Enjoyed the new political angle that is being introduced.

    "Quite disappointing"

Having listened to and thoroughly enjoying both Sarrow's Napoleon/Wellington novels I found this story to be very disappointing. The story had no direction. All throughout, seeds of storyline are sown but, in the end, they aren't followed, resulting in a anticlimactic summary or epilogue at the end leaving one wonder, what was the point of all that!
