Story
Dolly Jamieson is not homeless, she's merely between permanent abodes. The 78-year-old spends her days keeping warm at the local library, where she enjoys sparring with the officious head librarian and helping herself to the free morning tea. It's not so bad, really. But it's certainly a far cry from the 1960s, when this humble girl from Geelong became an international star of the stage. As the acclaimed lead in the Broadway production of The Rose of France, all Dolly's dreams had come true. So how, in her old age, did she end up here?

Story
At the school gate, when she accidentally kissed one new friend on the nose and called another a "beautiful man-horse", Rachael realized that small-town France could hardly be more different to Australia. The smell of cigarettes replaced the tang of bone-broth and sprouted sourdough, the neighbors sometimes came to blows and under no circumstances would anyone wear active wear in public. Muddling through in terrible French pushed Rachael's family to their limits. Some days, everybody cried and ate their feelings with croissants. But the town of Sommières embraced these ragtag Australians.

Publisher's Summary
England, 1918. Armistice Day should bring peace into Leonora's life. Rather than secretly making cosmetics in her father's chemist shop to sell to army nurses such as Joan, her adventurous Australian friend, Leo hopes to now display her wares openly. Instead, Spanish flu arrives in the village, claiming her father's life. Determined to start over, she boards a ship to New York City. On the way she meets debonair department store heir Everett Forsyth.... In Manhattan, Leo works hard to make her cosmetics dream come true, but she's a woman alone with a small salary and a society that deems make-up scandalous.
New York City, 1949. Everett's daughter, Alice, a promising ballerina, receives a mysterious letter inviting her to star in a series of advertisements for a cosmetics line. If she accepts she will be immortalized like dancers such as Zelda Fitzgerald, Josephine Baker and Ginger Rogers. Why, then, are her parents so quick to forbid it?
Her Mother's Secret is the story of a brave young woman chasing a dream in the face of society's disapproval.More from the same

Uuugghh
The narrator ruins any chance of getting into this book. Very dull and the accents used were off putting. The main character's accent very insipid. She painted no picture of what could be a good book. Make up, fabrics and fashion, jewellery, decor....1920s 30s glamour. All lost in a drab delivery akin to reading the phone book. 6 hours in I want to return this book as I had from the beginning. This story is just not believable. The characters were wishy-washy. After listening to the fabulous City of Girls this book was very disappointing. And returned to Audible.

Not my favourite Natasha Lester
This book was somewhat enjoyable but I don't like "edge of your seat" drama for such a prolonged period. Or the constant conflict. Could be triggering for some people. Narration was excellent.

Interesting story but terribly clichéd.
I have enjoyed all Natasha Lester's other books and found this one gave an interesting insight into the early days of cosmetics. However, the romance story- lines were full of predictable cliches, which weakened my overall enjoyment. I wonder if there was a ghost writer?

What a combo
Outstanding i really didn't want it to end.
You know it's good when your days following you are still entwined in the story.
I picked this read partly based on the fabulous Edwina Wren, who did not disappoint and the lovely Nastasha Lester who caught my attention after being given the The Paris Secret.
