Story
In an 18th-century England of wit, womanising and powdered wigs, provincial Philip Jettan runs the risk of irreproachability. Cleone Charteris stands in no such danger. The golden-haired, headstrong despair of men, she seeks a husband who can duel and dice with the best of them. So Philip leaves for Paris, where his father's hopes and his lover's ideals are realised, but with unforeseen consequences for them both.... A peerlessly successful and prolific romantic novelist, Georgette Heyer shows in Powder and Patch what won her a wide, devoted audience that continues to this day.

Story
The Priory may look ramshackle in appearance, but Peter, Margaret and Celia are totally charmed by their newly inherited country house. But there's more to The Priory than meets the eye. Left empty for years, hardly a single person has set foot inside, and down in the village, the locals whisper of a ghostly figure that roams the halls. When a murder is committed, the new owners start to fear the rumours are true - but is their new home really haunted, or is someone trying to scare them away?

Following on from These Old Shades
Quite a good book, but if you have read These Old Shades, then the story is virtually the same just with The Dukes son as the main character. I think not quite as good as the first book, but still ok.

The very best of Georgette Heye
This is a rip roaring tale of romance heroism and human values. You will want more more more as you are transported into regency times with coaches powered wigs card playing and routes. The story follows Vidal’s exploits in the Alistair family. Characters are endearing and the story unfolds in often funny and unexpected ways. A fabulous read to which to will return again and again over the years.

These Old Shades & Devil’s Cub are her best works
These Old Shades & Devil’s Cub are the only two novels which follow on the story of the one aristocratic family. And I wish there were more. The characters are brilliantly brought to life with Heyer’s best repartee & stories. No other leading men have their charismatic flaws & strengths. I cannot recommend them highly enough.
All her novels are entertaining but these two stand above & always will. Her other novels are delightful but lack the brilliance of language of these two, which have lost none of their wit over time.
