Publisher's Summary

"The strangest things happen when you're dead." (May Elizabeth Trump) The deathly silence is about to be broken. She disliked the company of others and death did little to warm her spirit. She had led an independent life and she faced death in much the same way. She was finally alone, finally free from the mindless babble of others, at least that's what she thought. May Elizabeth Trump was the rarest of spirits and she was none too happy about it either. She was a dead medium, a ghost who can speak with the living, and her services were to become in great demand. Flung into the limelight and smothered with unwanted attention, May soon discovers that it is not only ghosts with long awaited messages that have taken an interest in her. Something dark was lurking in the shadows, stalking her. Even the dead are not left to rest in peace. Dead Medium: A humorous, character driven story and a unique vision of life after death. Not your average ghost story.

    Story
"Hilarious! Calendar Girls meets Caspar the Ghost."
What did you love best about Dead Medium?

The book was really unusual. It's a mystery, and kind of a ghost story and a hilarious character comedic novel all at the same time. May Trump is a sort of likable curmudgeon... plain talking, no nonsense and with a wicked dry sense of sarcasm. When she dies she finds herself able to communicate with the living and becomes embroiled with a group of madcap amateur mediums who are kind of like Madame Arcate from Blithe Spirit times four. The book is very, very funny and the narration only adds to the humor. It was a delightful story to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the characters - they are a great mixed bag of personalities. It really had the feel of a kind of Calendar Girls or Exotic Marigold Hotel kind of energy combined with the grouchy, lovable humor of MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin novels. May Trump is a fabulous character and the author manages to create surprising levels and emotional depth to the story despite the far-fetched supernatural premise.

Have you listened to any of Joel Froomkin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I haven't... but this is excellent. He has a great sense of comedic style - it really feels like you're listening to a radio drama performed by a bunch of witty grande dames. He made me laugh out loud several times.

Who was the most memorable character of Dead Medium and why?

It would be pretty hard to choose someone other than May Trump. She's got a Maggie Smith cutting humor that is hilarious.

    Any additional comments?

The cover of the book makes the novel seem more spooky than it is. It's really a cozy english comedic mystery which a cast of wacky, wonderful chapters. Not a scary or dark tale in the least.

    "Bob @ Platypire Reviews"

I got this audiobook on a whim, and I am not disappointed at all! A fun tale of the other side mingling with our own, living one, and characters that will make you laugh out loud while you fall in love with them.

The narration is amazing. Sometimes I could swear I was hearing Maggie Smith, which pleased me to no end. He put emphasis in the dialog in a way that helped me to visualize the story.

I loved it, every little bit of it. One of my favorite things I've listened to this year.

    "An entertaining read"

This book was very different from what I usually listen to, preferring zombies and vampires to ghosts,. However, I really enjoyed this book.

Sometimes you need a book that makes you laugh and leave you with s smile.
The characters were interesting, colorful and fun.
I am just sad that there doesn't seem to be more in this vein in Peter John's catalogue on Amazon.

"a curmudgeon finds her place in the afterlife"
Would you consider the audio edition of Dead Medium to be better than the print version?

Probably, the narration definitely added to it.

What other book might you compare Dead Medium to and why?

Possibly the Agatha Raisin series because this is not the most likable character, yet somehow one ends up liking and rooting for her.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The ending is an unexpected twist.

If you could rename Dead Medium, what would you call it?

Why would I rename it? Dead Medium sums it up perfectly.

    Any additional comments?

This book was a pleasant surprise and an enjoyable light read. The story has lots of humor, and the characters are fun and funny.

This story was so good to me I couldn't stop listening. If I could fund it, I would turn this book into a movie.

    Story
    "What's the point?"

I just couldn’t get into ‘Dead Medium’. The characters are interesting but not that likable, which goes a long way with me getting into a book. The plot doesn’t really go anywhere and I’m not sure what they’re trying to accomplish. There is trying to raise money by having May act as a conduit between the living and the dead, but it doesn’t happen often enough and while the need to raise money is genuine, the author doesn’t give it the urgency to make it seem important. There are the soul stealers, they’re mentioned a ton but we rarely see them and don’t learn enough about them to have them make enough of an impact on the story. In the end I felt like it was more “A week in the life of a ghost” than a mystery. The twist at the end was neat but a little too late and just not enough to really make me enjoy this book.

At first I thought it was strange a male narrator when the main character, and nearly all the characters in fact, are female, but Mr. Froomkin makes it work. He does a great job with all the voices and i really thought he brought the book to life. I don't think I would have finished it if it weren't for him.

    Story
"A 3-dimensional ghost story, read with character "

A simple tale of small town transcendentalism, with likeable, 3-dimension characters (although some are ghosts), and just enough happening to keep it entertaining.

Nicely read, with convincing characters and good pace - once the narrator's accents settles down after the first few chapters.
