Becky Bloomwood has a fabulous flat in London's trendiest neighborhood, a troupe of glamorous socialite friends, and a closet brimming with the season's must-haves. The only trouble is that she can't actually afford it - not any of it.
Her job writing at Successful Savings not only bores her to tears, it doesn't pay much at all. And lately Becky's been chased by dismal letters from Visa and the Endwich Bank - letters with large red sums she can't bear to read - and they're getting ever harder to ignore.
She tries cutting back; she even tries making more money. But none of her efforts succeeds. Becky's only consolation is to buy herself something...just a little something...
Finally a story arises that Becky actually cares about, and her front-page article catalyzes a chain of events that will transform her life - and the lives of those around her - forever.
Sophie Kinsella has brilliantly tapped into our collective consumer conscience to deliver a novel of our times - and a heroine who grows stronger every time she weakens. Becky Bloomwood's hilarious schemes to pay back her debts are as endearing as they are desperate. Her "confessions" are the perfect pick-me-up when life is hanging in the (bank) balance.
This book is also known as The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic.

"Hilarious...hijinks worthy of classic I Love Lucy episodes." (USA Today)
This was a reread for the millionth time but first time on audiobook and Emily Gray was fantastic. You really felt the book along with her.
Such a great and different experience and also great to listen to whilst driving to and from work :)
Can't wait to continue the series on audiobooks.
"shopaholic fun fun fun"
This is an amazingly funny book, I had tears coming down my face from laughing so hard. Mainly because I find myself doing the same types of things that the wonderful charachter Becky Bloomwood does to get out of debt. Positively fabulous! If you thought Bridget Jones' Diary was funny, wait until you read/hear Shopaholic.
"Not my cup of tea."
Don't get me wrong, I actually like most of Sophie Kinsella's novels--just not this one. Kudos to the reader, who did an excellent job. I'm afraid, however, that this book and I were never exactly meant to be friends--although I did try.
"What a fun read!"
I am not into Chick Lit, but this book was great. The book is quirky, fresh, fun, humorous and has great characters. Emily Gray, the narrator, did an amazing job too. She really got the voice of our main character Becky down perfect. I would definitely recommend this book.
"cute for a while"
I typically enjoy Sophie Kinsella books BUT this one took it's toll on me after several chapters. I just felt that Becky Bloomwood was a pathological liar after ALL she did was LIE about EVERYTHING.. I am almost done listening to this audio book so hope in the end she learns a lesson and changes her ways.
"how not to shop by Betty B"
great fun book.I had to read the neaxt one immediately.Sophie Kinsella has made a new comic character for our times.Read it and weep!(with laughter)
"Cute & Funny!"
I picked this book up after seeing it in the bookstore and thinking the title sounded fun (and I liked the artwork on the bookcover). I truly enjoyed this book! It was an easy listen and kept me laughing. Yes, some would say it is all about a girl and her shopping addiction and why can't she control herself, but that is what makes it funny! Also, the narrator for this series does a great job!
"Not so much!"
I really had high hopes for this book but I felt that the protagonist was very dull and shallow. The only reason I give it two stars is because of the short romantic scene, otherwise this was a bitter disappointment. I planned to get the other shopaholic books but thought better of it.
"Entertaining light reading"
Excellent - entertaining and funny. Really enjoyed it. If you are familiar with London its even better as it mentions a lot of well known tourist spots and shops.
I am ashamed to admit that I purchased it. The only thing worse than admitting that I purchased it was actually listening to it. If you enjoy listening to someone read the advertisements in a fashion magazine (albeit in a lovely British accent), then this is the book for you. The character has the maturity level of a 12 year old and the credit line of an adult. I think the story was supposed to be funny. I wasn't able to find the humor in it. Avoid this book at all costs.
"Long and Annoying"
I found myself wanting to strangle the character. I felt like the story was just a list of all the things she bought while shopping. I expected it to have a lot more plot development. The end of the book did finally get a little more interesting and made me curious about the sequel.
"Enjoyable and Funny"
The story of Shopaholic is enjoyable and light hearted.
Most of the way through it's very funny, though it has to be admitted, it's very silly at the same time. And as Becky spun her harmless lies and headed into scrape...after scrape... after scrape, I found myself laughing!
Loved this book! Very funny! I can't wait to download the next book! Definitely relates to most young woman with bad shopping habits, me included!
"near car crash, so funny."
I love that when I am stuck in traffic I can laugh out loud to my funny shopaholic.
I can really see myself in alot of what goes on.
yes i almost crashed the car through laughing so much.
its great light fun.
"Fun and entertaining"
Thoroughly enjoyed this book Becky is a very likeable character who you cant help but warm to and empathise with despite getting herself into some tricky situations. It did make me chuckle !
"Love this series!!"
Love listening to this series. Have read all the books loads of times, just waiting for the rest of the series to come out on audible.. Hope it will be soon!!
"Very enjoyable, easy to listen to, and very silly"
The main character, Becky, is infuriatingly silly, but it is fun listening to her reason herself into ridiculous situations and even more ridiculous purchases, very well narrated by Emily Gray.
This book is silly and infuriating but it really is very enjoyable.
yes i have. Its so frustratingly funny
gosh i just want to strangle Becky ( main character). but i love her also.. laugh a minute book.
"Funny but not the best from Kinsella"
As always with Kinsella's book, there is a lot of funny scenes but not enough place for the love story, it's a pity because she is very good at it.
That's why this novel isn't my favorite. For me the best is definetly "Can you keep a secret" and "I've got your number".
However, Emily Gray made a good job with the read.
Why, why didn't I heed the advice of Louise from Chedburgh?
I've been listening to a lot of classics and I thought this might be a nice easy going change, like watching a chick flick movie, but whereas a movie only lasts 2 hours this goes on and on and on. It's painful.
I got through 4 hours thinking it would get better but it just gets worse and worse, the part with the zebra jeans was the last straw. Thank goodness for Audible's return policy.
"The Shopaholic Series of books"
Initially, I purchased the first book in the series, Confessions Of A Shopaholic, written by Sophie Kinsella and narrated by Emily Grey, and enjoyed listening to it so much that I couldn't wait to get my ears on the rest of the books in the series!
The books follow the mishaps and triumphs of a modern young lady, Rebecca Bloomwood, who lives in London and who cannot resist shopping. Indeed, her one aim in life is to shop!
The book begins with a letter from Becky's bank offering her, as a graduate from Bristol University, an overdraft facility of £2,000. A second letter from the bank follows telling her that she has exceeded her overdraft limit by £1794!!!!! The trouble is that Becky cannot stop shopping. She needs to shop and she does, thus getting into more debt. She becomes very anxious about these growing debts but she has a solution for her anxiety, which is, of course, more shopping!!!! Her struggles with her shopping addition are recounted, by her, in a very light-hearted way in this easy-to-listen to book. I'm sure that most ladies, young and old alike, will be able to identify with some part of the book and will be able to picture themselves in some of the hilarious situations that Becky finds herself in. The other books in the Shopaholic series follow her on/off romance with Luke Brandon and the way he tries to come to terms with her obsession with retail therapy and how they deal with it.
The books are a delight to listen to and are extremely addictive!! So be prepared to get hooked!!!!!
