Jack, a sometimes humorous, sometimes philosophical ex-special operations pilot and soldier is one of the few left to struggle through the desolation left in the aftermath; seeking to survive as a new ferocious species emerges from the rubble, hungry and unrelenting. Will his special forces training be enough? Will he be able to keep his children safe and guide the few survivors through perils that now roam the world they once knew? Or will the hordes that now own the night prevail, forever removing the last of mankind from existence? Humankind was once at the top of the food chain. But that has now changed.

"My lowest rating ever"
I think this book would have received much better rating if it weren't for the narrator – Oh My Giggles! He sounds like The “Macho Man” Randy Savage meets Hulk Hogan every time a character has an internal monologue. It drove me crazy! I’d rather receive a figure-four-leg-lock than listen to another one of these books – “OH YEAH!!!”.
"Good story, terribad narration"
I decided to try this book after listening to A shrouded world. I love Mark Tufo and enjoyed the collaboration. Let me start by saying that the story is good, it has potential to be a good audiobook. Unfortunately, the narration ruined it for me. The narrator emphasized every other word, it sounded like a professional wrestler was reading.
Worth a listen if your into the whole z genre. If for no other reason, he co wrote a book with mark tufo and it's excellent. The co written book is a sideline to this and zombie fallout and it's great! Check out both!
great story and a different turn of the apocalypse. if you can get past the "Batman" voice, it is an enjoyable listen. the narator does settle down a bit into the book.
"REPLACE THE NARRATOR"
I had to listen to this in increments due to how bad the narrator is. I can only compare it to the guy who does the voice over for cops.
Story was good tho...
"I feel 1 of the best series audible has to offer."
Absolutely one of the best series on audible. Well narrated and keeps you on the edge of your seat all the time. You'll laugh out loud often and you feel as if you are right there with the characters. Every detail is explained and described in great detail. . you can imagine everything so clearly. Which is the mark of a good book in my eyes. Thank You John O'Brein for countless great hours of entertainment!
"INTERESTING FIRST BOOK!"
It's a good story, a little more military based than I like, but it was still good...
Jack is on a rescue mission out of pure love...and that he thought of his children first...
Rescuing the kids,then Michelle...
this would probably make a very good movie...its got the right concept for sure....just tone down the military aspect a bit...this book was geared more towards the male crowd in my opinion...but it wont stop me from listening to book 2...lol
This has been on my TBL list for a longtime...because 1..I like the zombie genre...2 I like the ASW series....and 3 it came highly recommended...and I understand why...Jack is in a rush to rescue his kids after a virus overtakes the world practically overnight...and poof the human race seems to just have disappeared...until night falls and there are night walking, screeching quick moving zombies everywhere!!! After Jack rescues his kids, he decides to make the journey across the world to rescue his girlfriend Lynn...and he makes it! Jack is a tough one..this book is very military oriented...and I hope book 2 is not as much...because its just not what I want in my zombie fiction...some is fine...but I felt a little overwhelmed with it at times...and I think some women might feel the same way....But there is a twist in here somewhere that I feel really centers around Jack...and I gotta know what it is!! ..I think this is a very solid start to a hopefully awesome series!!!
"Good story, terrible narration."
The other reviews are not kidding. The narrator is just terrible. If you can get by that the story isn't bad for a zombie-ish tale.
This is well done story about a zombie plague. I like Mr, O'Brien approach with the the zombies who are not your basic zombie more like something like a D.N.A. Mutant that likes to eat us. Mr O'Brien being in the Air Force give us a real sense on how people like Jack leadership can make survival great chance. What Would you do? Being the military gives a group a better chance then people who are not.
awesome introduction to the tale of Jack Walker and his family, the ultimate post apocalypse survivors
"Really, really, awful."
Bad story, worse vocalisation. Only managed first 15 minutes and had to turn it off.
Anger that I had wasted a credit on it.
"A book for juniors"
A bit lovey dovey and seemingly writen with teens in mind.
will still get thr sequel when I am in that frame of mind.
Its well told story and gripping atmosphere
I like Lynne as she don't take any nonsense and is a good partner for Jack
Jack is a Favourite of mine and also Lynne
Day of the Night Runners ???
brilliant to listen to and cant wait to see what happens next , super super story
Really good listening can't wait to get the rest, I quite liked the night runners
Well worth getting this book
"Ok took a long time to get going"
not too bad
I had shrouded world and enjoyed it but expected to because of Mark Tufo so i got this one and although for me it took a long time to get going it really got much better 1/2 to 2/3 of the way through and from there it was engrossing and very enjoyable.
