Publisher's Summary

"It wasn't that Sugieh was particularly wicked. It was just that she was a Siamese."

Animal lovers Doreen Tovey and her husband acquire their first Siamese kitten to rid themselves of an invasion of mice. But Sugieh is not just any cat.

She's an actress, a prima donna, an iron hand in a delicate, blue-pointed glove. Sugieh quickly establishes herself as queen of the house.

First published over forty years ago, this warm, witty and moving story has never gone out of style; a truly enjoyable read for anyone who's ever been owned by a cat. Doreen Tovey has written over a dozen books, which have sold over 100,000 copies in eight countries.

"Wonderful whimsical story, but not well produced."
Would you listen to Cats in the Belfry again? Why?

Probably not because the humour and comedy is much better read in your own head.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cats in the Belfry?

Solomon throwing up on the church lady.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance had some glaring faults that should not have made it past editing. There was one section where the line was repeated after the narrator seemed to lose her place. And another place where she stumbled over the words, then tried again.

I don't blame the narrator. I'm sure this happens with narrators at times, but should have been corrected with editing.

I do however blame the narrator for the poor phrasing and odd pauses. Not a good job by all involved.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

You could never make this book into a movie. That is a laughable thought.

    Any additional comments?

I had this book as a child and read it again many times growing up. I grew up with Siamese cats, and this story so charmingly illustrates the Siamese cat nature.

But the audio version was a disappointment. Not only for the actual narration errors, but the accent and phrasing including badly places pauses by the narrator was off putting and it just didn't capture the same tone I expected.

    "Lovely"

It's very soothing and lovely. Pretty funny. Basically, it's one of those books you can take instead of prozac, which is exactly what I was looking for.

The reading is very fitting and also pleasant. I bought 2 other books by this author after listening to this one.

The only minus I could mention - is that the book has a place where the reader repeats the lines with a slight change in emphasis and one where you can hear her sigh and re-do the line. It doesn't really bother me in any way, but the publishers should know of this.

    "One of my favorite books"

I love this soft-spoken book about the wonders and nightmares of owning ornery cats (Siamese in particular). There are some glitches in the technical part of the reading but Joy Gelardi's voice is wonderful - perfect in fact.
I've told many a cat lover about this series. I hope Audible will carry all the books by this author. I believe Mrs Tovey recently passed (2008) and these books were written in the late 50's and early 60's so that is reflected. Indeed, it seems even older than that - I'm guessing because Mrs Tovey lived in the English countryside. Charming is an understatement!

"Ok Story, Reading Could be better"

I did enjoy Cats In The Belfry. It is basically a series of anecdotes by a owner of several siamese cats. The anecdotes are mostly somewhat whimsical, so it makes for a pretty pleasant read. Two downsides though: firstly, the reading was somewhat difficult to listen to. It is read by a British woman, talking extremely fast in long long long run-on sentences. It takes a long time to get used to that and to hear and process all the words. The other thing that for me is challenging to get past, is the fact that this is a story about a family who acquires a cross-eyed Siamese queen and attempts to breed her. In breeders circles, that is considered somewhat of a travesty, and the book seems to be clueless about the whole morality question of that.

Aside from those problems though, the stories are sweet and mostly light-hearted fare that are easy and enjoyable to listen to. I am glad that I got this audiobook.

    Story
    "Old fashioned charm"
If this book wasn’t for you, who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is a cat lovers book but was written in another email. It might appeal to those who feel nostalgic for the post war period.

Would you be willing to try another book from Doreen Tovey? Why or why not?

No....the mini stories that made up this book are sweet, but after one or two they become a bit repetitive and loose some of their charm. One book is enough.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narration was a bit fast on "normal speed" and the narrators voice is a slightly irritating high pitched one, and this did detract a little.
