Publisher's Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents a novel of redemption and suspense, as a woman haunted by the unsolved murder of her childhood friend returns to her small South Carolina hometown....

Tory Bodeen grew up in a run-down house where her father ruled with an iron fist and a leather belt - and where her dreams and talents had no room to flourish. Her one escape was her neighbor Hope, who lived in the big house just a short skip away, and whose friendship allowed Tory to be something she wasn’t allowed to be at home: a child.

Then Hope was brutally murdered, and everything fell apart.

Now, as she returns to Progress with plans to settle in and open a stylish home-design shop, Tory is determined to find a measure of peace and free herself from the haunting visions of the past. As she forges a new bond with Cade Lavelle - Hope’s older brother and the heir to the family fortune - she isn’t sure whether the tragic loss they share will unite them or drive them apart. But she is willing to open her heart, just a little, and try.

But living so close to those unhappy memories will be more difficult and frightening than Tory could ever have expected. Because Hope’s murderer is nearby as well....

“Roberts may have achieved her personal best in this tense Southern Gothic. As atmospheric and unsettling as a Tennessee Williams play.... This is romantic drama at its best.” - Publishers Weekly (starred review)

What a Shame!

What could have been a very enjoyable, classic, Nora Roberts mystery of the highest caliber was tedious because of the poor narration. A monotone unimaginative delivery that spoiled the whole.

Excellent story, badly performed

Another well written, absorbing story from Nora Roberts but almost ruined by sub-standard narration. The reader has an annoying voice for straight reading but also fails to differentiate voices between characters. Add to that, her incorrect emphasis and phrasing, and my enjoyment of a good book was considerably diminished .

Reader ruins it

This reader doesn't know how to pace her words. She made it very difficult to like the characters and the story.

Story was good but performance was lacking

The reader spoke too fast and didn’t pause between paragraphs and chapters. It was like one long story

Narrator wrecks whole story

This book may be good but hard to tell with how bad the narrator is, she reads it so fast you can no tell what is actually happening or who is talking.

Had to stop listening

Seemed like it was going to be a great book but I'll never know because I could not tolerate the narration! Awful!

Goes no where slowly

Story line is super slow and very similar to other books by the author.
I would not recommend.

Great story

This was such a great story and such a twist at the end. The only negative was the narrator…… she just read the book….. her voice for the main character was monotone and only changed when doing Faith’s. It’s such a shame but fortunately the story was so brilliant that it kept me listening to the end.
