Publisher's Summary

Joe Arden and Narrator Hall of Fame inductee Andi Arndt deliver a perfectly layered performance in Cake, a romance about finding love and redemption in unexpected places.

Quiet and aloof rock star Jake McKallister and outspoken, vivacious college student Casey Caldwell are polar opposites: Casey is bubbly and talkative; Jake is reclusive. Casey enjoyed a picturesque childhood; Jake’s childhood could only be described as a well-publicized nightmare. Jake’s life revolves around music, and Casey can’t carry a tune.

Music saved Jake, yet he lacks the outgoing personality expected of a famous performer. After surviving an unspeakable crime as a young teen, he becomes a guarded workaholic who desperately attempts to forget the past. Career success comes easily for Jake, but he struggles to make personal connections.

Despite their differences, Casey’s light harmonizes with Jake’s darkness, a balance embodied in the unexpectedly warm and humorous dual performance. Can the sweetness of true love overcome Jake’s tragic past?

This is the first book in the Cake series, a collection of contemporary romance novels focusing on the lives of a famous family.

had my reservations

when I read the summary I wasn't sure if it was too much of a love story without grit.
Boy was I wrong!!!!! I've never read this author before but I was laughing, swooning, gasping, sighing and crying.... this is one of the best stories I've listened too.
I'm a huge Meghan March and Kresley Cole fan and have read them all and even though this is vastly different and closer to Vi Keelands writing (which I'm a fan of)
I absolutely loved it. I'm going back for more.
I'm not a great lover of Joe Arden but Andi Arnt sold me.....as always and I'm glad she did as well as narrating most of the story.
the horror inflicted on the hero was heartbreaking and the heroine was created perfectly......well done J Bengstonn....you have a new fan!!!

Loved hanging out with these people

Loved the story. Not my favorite male narrator but once I accepted it, all good

Cake

I loved this story. One of the things that I enjoyed most was that although set in a world that few of us are likely to experience, that of fame and fortune with a flip side background story of unimaginable horror and pain, the essence of the love story was one attainable by many of us, that of two people connecting, finding something special in that connection and then working together to make it work.
My husband once wrote "I will always love you, want to bring out the highest possible good in you". I felt that the characters of Jake and Casey strove to do this for each other, Casey, not having Jake's traumatic background, leading the charge and through patience, understanding and love bringing out a deep healing in Jake
I kept waiting for the dramatic breakup before the make-up that is so often used in contemporary fiction to build suspense but was relived and pleased to see that Bengtsson chose a different tact to build that suspense in "Cake"
Both Casey and Jake were immensely likeable characters, flawed and real, ones that I connected with and wanted to triumph.
I laughted, I cried, I sat sitting on my train commute with a dorky, goofy grin, and a whole other gambit of emotions as this story unfolded. I highly recommend "Cake" to other fellow contemporary fiction readers and look forward to reading more by J Bengtsson.

Pretty boring

I didn’t like it. I had to finish it because that’s just my style. The narrators were so boring. I cringed the whole time.

Compelling listening

Was pretty predictable story but compelling listening. Voices a bit off for characters, was entertaining hearing the male voice do such terrible women's voices.

3.5-4 Stars

I found the overall storyline good but felt that there is a lot of unnecessary rambling towards the second half of the book. The last few chapters of the book redeemed the storyline for me and I loved the ending.

Overall, I enjoyed listening to the story which was well narrated by Andi and Joe, but I don’t think I’ll be continuing with the rest of the series.

Sweet story but no real angst between the leads.

This story was jam packed with Rock Stars, fame, kidnapping, coma and sweet romance. The leads were a little too sweet, a little too perfect. The story too much to be real. The narration by Andi Arndt was, as usual, perfect and could have carried the whole story. Joe Arden's female voices always annoy me to distraction and even his male characters seem a little creepy and 'breathy'. A good listen for younger readers.

Light overcomes darkness

I enjoyed this book. The banter between the 2 main characters had me smiling. When Jake told his story it made me cry. When the brothers teased each other it made me laugh. And in the end the power of love shone through. This is story is not centred around a one night stand, but about an attraction that grew into love. I would recommend this book for people who want a simple love story and not a lust story.
