I loved this book and the main characters, I loved the way the two stories started to intertwine. I love Jane Collingwood's narration and this is how I found Lisa Jewell, my first by this author but now downloaded more. 5 stars all the way.
"Loved this story"
Great parallel storylines, consisting of family history, romance and some amateur detective work. The back and forth in time really worked and the narrator did a fantastic job representing each character uniquely.
"I love this book so much!"
Love this narrator..she isn't struggling to do a British accent. I absolutely loved everything about this book but to be honest, I don't think k I would have lived it near as much reading it as I did listening to it! there was just something about the way she read it...changed voices for each character but not in a distracting way. And the story! Oh the story ♡♡♡♡
absolutely wonderful! the author is amazing! great characters...great story...read it one day I simply couldn't put it down.
"Lovely story set in 2 different times"
I think either are just as good. I really like audiobook and the narrator was very nice to listen to
A bit like "the House We grew up in" also by Lisa Jewell. It's 2 stories and the present story is finding out about a family members past.
This is my first time listening to Jane Collingwood. She was lovely to listen to and really bought the stories to life.
Yes, but I don't want to say because I don't want to give any parts of the book away.
It wasn't my favourite Lisa Jewell book but it was still a very good story. She is one of my favourite authors at the moment and all of her books get me hooked very quickly.
"Great narration paired with a great story."
This was a great story read by a wonderful narrator. The narrators voice was easy to listen to with differentiation between characters. Loved it!
"A little slow to get in to."
It took a while to get interesting and the reader had rather a sleepy voice. Eventually I loved it and longed to know how the story would unfold , was not disappointed.
The story was well narrated - loved the voice and it worked really well for all the characters!
Great merged story lines - I loved the constant change of era!
She kept the pace and flow well - loved her voicing of the parts, great choice!
Various moments - all handled very well and tenderly. Such a tragic love story - the 'could have beens'!
A thoroughly enjoyable storyline - loved the colourful characters, the two different eras and the way it was all brought to a conclusion.
Sad to finish it!!
"The art of narration..."
An excellent book, delightfully detailed. And having just written a very negative review (exceptionally rare for me!) elsewhere about a narrator, I'm happy to give Jane Collingwood five stars here. Her story narration was perfect and her characters so well observed.
I enjoyed listening to this delightful double story of two women with two different destinies. It was good company and was sorry when the book ended. Excellent narrator. I had to get used to her lisp at first, but it then became an endearing feature.
"A wonderful journey"
The story was engaging and the narration was lovely, I wanted to keep driving so I could keep listening to the story. It made a long tail back in traffic bearable!
Jane Collingwood has a lovely tone and makes the change in character speaking seem real as each one has a different accent. The voices of the characters would have seemed much flatter to me if I had only been reading the book myself.
How you appear when you get old does not necessarily reflect the person you were when you were young!
"Great story covering many decades"
All the descriptions of the 1920's, with the clothes and the attitudes so interesting, then skipping forward to the modern day search for the history of what happened in the 20's. Good clear defination of what year is being talked about. The modern day, problems with smoking and the crazy rock star, all pull together for an interesting and amusing story.
"Slow start, annoying narration but well written"
I nearly gave up after the first 20 minutes. The narrator was OK with voices, apart from giving one of the Guernsey characters a slight Australian accent, but as narrator she sounded like a cross between the Big Brother and the Masterchef voice overs. I found that very annoying, but I did eventually get used to it.
The story itself was gripping after a while and the characters interesting. By the time I got half-way through, I really didn't want to put it down. I was pleased that there were some unforeseen twists and that it didn't pan out quite as I expected it to.
"awful awful awful and dull"
Couldn't wait for it to end. Betty smiled, Arlett smiled! that's about it. Really boring.
What a lovely story. The narrator was excellent and I found the way people lived in the 1920's and the 1950's so interesting. It was like listening to two stories but linked together - I loved it!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters were so wonderfully drawn that I gasped out loud at some of the twists and turns. The beautifully written descriptive passages of an era I adore were pure escapism and like a good book you just couldn't put down, I have guiltily invented opportunities to listen to the story more...another trip to the shops; a longer walk with the dogs and even painting the spare room. I have downloaded all of Lisa Jewell's books now and I am currently plotting a long road trip to the north of Scotland to indulge myself.
