Publisher's Summary

Fusing Keatsian mists and mellow fruitfulness with the vitality, the immediacy and the colour hit of Pop Art - via a bit of skullduggery - Autumn is a witty excavation of the present by the past.

Autumn is a take on popular culture and a meditation in a world growing ever more bordered: what constitutes richness and worth?

Autumn is the first instalment in Seasonal: four stand-alone stories, separate yet interconnected and cyclical, exploring what time is and how we experience it.

Dazzling

I loved this book - the intricacies of relationships, the background of turmoil, the homage to reading. Superb.

An interesting read

Not an easy book to read, the story is intriguing and complex to read. Once I realised it was the first book written after Brexit it put the layers of story into context. This book will not be for everyone but if you persist you will be rewarded.

Stunning!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Highly recommended. Intelligent. Funny. Fierce. My first Ali Smith, have moved straight on to Winter. Can't wait.

What did you like best about this story?

It's unpredictability, a 'love affair' like no other.

What about Melody Grove’s performance did you like?

Loved Melody Grove's performance. I hope she will narrate the entire quartet.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Now I want to read the other three

From the intriguing first page, Ali Smith takes you on a wondrous journey, a love story that is refreshingly platonic, full of absorbing detail of the minutiae of the ordinary, while dealing with some of the bigger concepts we all struggle with, death for example, all while weaving Pauline Boty's art and life into the story through her accounting of another life, that of Daniel Gluck. His story is told from the perspective of Elisabeth whose influential relationship with Daniel survives several decades. The book jumps around in time a fair bit as it fills in some detail of the main characters but this served to prompt me to re-read large portions of the book and refer back to previous sections and this also meant that the book stuck with me for many weeks after I had finished it. I know much has been written about the books relationship to Brexit but when read through an Australian lens I didn't find this particularly relevant or a detraction from what is a beautifully written book. As an aside: am I the only person who was reminded of the voice over dialogue in The Magic Roundabout when reading Ali's dialogue. All the . . .he said. . . .she said. Probably.
