Workin' up a hot, sticky sweat is pure pleasure with a hard-ridin' cowboyor two. Struggling stock contractor Gemma Jansen swallows her pride and tracks down circuit rider Cash Big Crow to offer him a job managing her ranch. Despite concerns about their age difference, Gemma consents. Cash suspects the sexy widow hides an untapped wild streak. He intends to loosen her tightly held reins of control, even if he has to break out his horsewhip to do it. But Cash is in for a surprise. Gemma proves a rough-and-ready participant in any leather-'n'-lace game Cash dreams up. Between riding herd on his wayward daughter, Macie, and rowdy cowboy Carter
McKay doggin Macie's every boot step, Cash struggles to hide his true feelings for Gemma. Except this time, Gemmas grabbed the bull by the horns and shes playing for keeps. Summers going to be a hot one at the Bar 9.

"Two Love Stories for the Price of One"
Two couples: Cash & Gemma, the former rodeo cowboy down on his luck due to trust in undeserving family members and the widowed rancher who needs help and some loving. Carter & Macie: The loner artist who doesn't fit in with his ranching brothers and the wandering young lady who has never had family she could count on. Yet somehow they are able to build relationships to make a new family.
For those that are squeamish about sex, there is plenty of it in this book -- threesomes, anal sex and dirty talking.
"Almost Good Older Woman/Younger Cowboy Romance"
I had great hopes for a modern western drama about an 40+ widow (Gemma) finding love for a 2nd time with a 30+ hot cowboy (Cash) and his daughter (Macie) who he barely knows. Unfortunately, Cash immediately demands total sexual dominance from Gemma, an independent ranch owner who hired Cash as her foreman. When Gemma agrees without reservation to become a doormat, I wanted to scream and started to loose interest. Of course, Cash isn't quite so open-minded about sexual freedom when his 22 year old daughter Macie starts dating a part-time ranch hand/artist. I enjoyed listening as Cash learns to build a relationship with his grown daughter, Gemma becomes friendly with Macie, Cash learns to work with the guy dating Macie and Macie becomes more confident. There were some fun sex scenes but too many involved domination, hitting, and bondage of women. I can't help thinking: if getting tied up & beaten was that much fun, the men would be wanting the treatment, not dishing it out.
"Fantastic Western Sexy As Hell Romance"
After the first book, Long Hard Ride, it was a no brainer to just continue right over to this book. What a lovely treat because you get 2 awesome hot romances in this book.
I love that the characters carry over from book to book and in this story you get to read more about Big Cash Crow and Gemma. They were introduced in the first book and I love that warranted their own awesome story.
Gemma & Big Cash Crow are a bit of an older couple in the traditional sense. However that is the draw for me. I love that the author made an amazing romance for a couple in their late thirties and forties. It was just as hot as anything that I have read.
The next couple is another McKay brother, Carter and his story is how he falls in love with Macie (Big Cash Crow's daughter). I loved the family dynamics in this story. You have a daughter/father healing relationship as well as the rough and tumble of a western erotic romance. Both couples have two coming together stories and it was just an awesome read. I know they say you dont have to read the books in order but it is just better if you do. You will just appreciate the character growth if you do.
Rebecca Estrella was again amazing with the delivery of the story.
The books in the series are less than 10 bucks to buy so I am going to enjoy the whole series.
"Not as good as the others"
I just couldn't get into the story from the start. It was hard for me to get through it although I did it was boring and not like the other books in the series which to me were way more exciting and interesting. Carter McKay was such an unlikable characters to me which had an effect on how much I enjoyed the book. Mainly it was just one hot scene to the next with no real depth.
I am enjoying this series, the family dynamics, and the modern western settings. I also really like the sizzle Ms James creates between the lovers, and the reasonable reactions of her characters during times of stress. As for the narrator, Ms Estrella, I think she creates a good image of the tale she's telling, except that she occasionally takes me off the page due to lack of contrast between male and female voices.
"THE TITLE ALONE STOPPED ME IN MY TRACKS!"
Rode Hard, Put Up Wet--I suppose you have to be a rancher to know what the heck that even means! Title aside, this series keeps drawing me in. As sexy as the storylines were--especially Macy and Carter--get a fire extinguisher for those two! --Something about this story was heavier than the first book; it was far more emotional than book 1 seemed to be.
All in all, I am completely hooked and am prepared to gorge myself on this series. Highly recommended!
"I love Lorelei James books!"
I've already listened to it several times- it's a great story! Before I bought it on audio, I read it from the library. This is primarily a great story about an older heroine- and how great passionate love can happen when you are older and be just as fulfilling. For an extra spicy facet- it also introduces the problems that comes with falling for an OCD artist with a younger couple centered around Carter McKay- one of the brothers we haven't heard much from yet. Awesome story!
There was amazing balance and sweetness in Gemma and Cash's story and it would have gone too smoothly- Hey! They are older and wiser, have loved and know who they are! But by adding the story of Carter McKay and Cash's daughter for spice and rough patches, it made this story a 5/5 for me.
She is always great, consistant and a joy to listen to. Thank you Rebecca!
Hard to without spoilers, but when Cash relates why he can't look at Gemma while they make love is very sweet. Many of Carter's explosions moved me to want to smack him up along side the head, but then I remember 'this is a story' :)
I love LJ's western books. Her men are alphas, the women no fools and the stories are credible( especially regarding what goes on behind the chutes in rodeo- don't let anyone tell you differently).
"Flippin noras, it just keeps getting better!!!"
I haven't read the print version but the audio was amazing. As I said in my previous review of book 1, Lorelai James' amazing writing skills are just so off the charts, I think that print and audio would be just as good either way.
I hate spoilers and to be honest as I'm going through this whole series I'm having a hard time "disliking" anyone! The series is blowing me away fantastic!
What's not to like about Rebeca Estrella, she totally complements the amazing writing. She is absolutely, hands down amazing with both female and male voices. The books are so good I don't think anyone could ruin them, but Rebeca is so good that in my opinion she ADDS to the quality if that is at all possible!
Yes, DOWNLOADED book 3 immediately!
Give this series a chance even though it's a bit "strong" in content, the quality makes up for it a thousand-fold.
Just kind of seemed like there wasn't much of a story and all sex and after a while it just got old. I seriously started fast forwarding through the sex. Who does that, right?
"Put up Wet ! Yep that's about the jist of it :)"
With Rode Hard Put Up Wet we of course get all-kinds-of-ways hot and steamy cowboy lovin but here we also get the added bonus of a two-four. As in 2 couples finding love and passion in 1 sexy story and how great is that....
We met our first couple; Gemma and Big Cash Crow in LONG HARD RIDE and although they’re older in the traditional sense (30’s & 40’s) both still very much have the “it” factor when it comes to spice in the bedroom. I loved their story and definitely preferred it out of the two. Cash even gave me a couple of *sigh* moments when he finally turned the lights on and opened his eyes… Their romance is about second chances, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
Explosive, impulsive, selfish, jealous, unsure, intense and at times downright annoying; Cash’s daughter Macie and self-centered artist Carter McKay as our second couple personified young love. This pair was all over the place with their emotions and a ton of fun to watch as I never knew what they were going to do next. I had a seriously tough time liking Carter though --as Macie often says “He’s a dumbass” Finding him immature and for the most part just an idiot. Cash on the other hand is all MAN...
Widow Gemma Jansen is looking for someone to help manage her ranch, luckily she knows just the sweet cowboy for the job. Cash Big Crow has just retired from the rodeo circuit and is looking to reconnect with his grown daughter Macie. Going to work for Gemma might be just the answer everyone’s looking for. Giving Cash and Macie the opportunity to settle in one place and get to know each other and Gemma the hired hand she needs. Of course before Cash agrees he has a few non-negotiable conditions; theres won’t be a strictly working relationship, Gemma might be the boss lady during the day but once in the bedroom Cash is going to be in charge, no questions asked.
To complete our foursome we’re also introduced to ranch hand and I’m too sexy for my boots/tortured artist Carter McKay. He takes one look at Macie and realizes he’s found his perfect muse. The artist in him begging to paint her, sculpt her and just plain have her. This doesn’t sit well with Cash, he knows all to well the reputations of those hard living, womanizing McKay boys and there ain’t no way one of them is getting near his daughter. Oh theres sure to be fun and games and even a few dust ups at the Bar-9 this summer.
As much as I enjoyed this it certainly wasn’t my favourite in the series and it took me a while to figure out why I was having a harder time connecting with this story. But with 2 couples and 4 POV’s it just wasn’t as tight. And with all the switching back and forth neither couple ever felt complete. Anyways, a very small gripe for another great instalment......
