On his first day of college, all Jeremy Miller can think about is getting away from his hellish home life, making the wrestling team, and finally getting a real boyfriend. He's sick to death of being used by closeted football players who are too afraid to admit they like guys. What he doesn't count on is losing his mind over the gorgeous, golden-eyed wrestling captain who needs to keep their attraction a secret at all costs.
After earning a full-ride wrestling scholarship and getting accepted into an elite sports medicine program, Beck thinks he's got it made. Now he's a favorite for the national championship in his weight class. Life has never been sweeter or more predictable. Never mind that he's gay and wishing he didn't have to hide it. There will be plenty of time for a social life after graduation. Until then he doesn't need anything to get in the way of his big plans, and that includes the adorable little wrestler who's got him all tied up in knots.

"Angsty college wrestlers with great narration"
This is a complex YA/NA story about two wrestlers finding love in a sport that is fairly homophobic, but in this case their coach is dangerously homophobic.
There is a lot of sex in this – so I think for groupings New Adult is more appropriate, but the angst and drama and sometimes over-the-topness sometimes felt more Young Adult.
Beck’s is gay but closeted, doesn’t want to lose his wrestling scholarship. Jeremy is the new guy, super attracted and attractive to Becks, but having to fight against the fear of outing.
The first part of the book is their push-pull of attraction, the second part is dealing with the aftermath.
The second part is where (for me) it got a bit too dramatic at times, though I appreciated the overall statements that get made and the end result. (I won’t say but it involves the Coach in a very bad way and Jeremy makes some decisions that are really hard to witness.)
At the end we get a very satisfying HEA and our MCs manage to bring the bad guy to justice! (I loved the whole Batman/Robin switcheroo underwear thing – very clever!)
Well I just love Chris Patton so I loved the hell out of this narration. He’s so easy to listen to and I think this hits his “age level” spot on. Kind of young, but mature enough for some hot man on man action. ☺
"Nice college age/coming out tale"
This was my first book by this author and I really enjoyed it. The SSU universe is a comprised of a group of friends (The Tribe) who find, help, support and love each other. This is the first couple, Beck and Jeremy. Beck is a closeted captain of the wrestling team whose world is rocked when he meets Jeremy, a freshman who is also on his wrestling team. Jeremy comes from a dysfunctional, abusive family and hopes going to SSU will enable to finally escape the shame and poverty of his family life. They both have challenges to overcome and it is not always pretty and stretches the "credibility" bounds a little. Despite that, I enjoyed their journey to couplehood, which is full of angst. But I also enjoyed that the story included post-angst drama. Chris Patton does a wonderful job in bringing these men to life.
"great story and narration"
I listen to this particular story at least twice a month. still so good :)
"Another great story"
The author pulls you into the lives of the characters nicely. There are so many twists and turn you are kept wanting mor.
Narration was excellent.
"A great start to this series!"
Although I know I like the writing of Maris Black, I didn't think I was going to like this one all that well because at first the characters seem to be the typical Hot young guys who shouldn't have any trouble getting whoever they want. The author took them deeper however than just their appearance. Jeremy is a freshman just starting college but he comes from a harsh background with the mother addicted to meth and alcoholic father who has beaten him. Beck comes from a family that isn't very loving and kind of indifferent to him. So each of these characters is broken to some extent and must overcome this obstacle in order to have a relationship with someone else. There is an immediate attraction to each other with Jeremy ready to come out of the closet as he enters college but Beck is not quite ready to come out because he is there for a wrestling scholarship which he feels he might lose should he come out. They have to work at their relationship because of this with the help of their friends. About three quarters of the way through the book things start to get really intense and the book also deals with sexual abuse among college athletes and their coaches. This issue is really important now days right up there next to the whole thing going on with priests and children. It is dealt with very nicely in the plot of the story. The narrator did well except it was difficult sometimes to tell the difference between the Jeremy and the Beck voice which he didn't really make very different. They both essentially sound the same and this made it confusing at times. After I got used to this however it was OK. I am anxious to now start the second book of the series since I really enjoyed this one. So to sum it up it started out a little slowly but really ended up being intense with a meaty plot. Oh yes, and the sex was really hot too.
"Pulls you in and keeps you interested"
Sweet, hot and engaging
I like that it didn't just follow trope. There were characters who engaged your interest and kept you into the story. I am easily distracted from audiobooks so it says a lot if I don't have to back up to parts I have spaced out in.
I enjoyed his voice for the characters. They were distinguishable from each other and he put a great performance in, not just reading out.
It's long but I sure would give it a try!
I love it. And all of Maris Black's books. I recommend all her books. ssu series, kage series and owning Corey.
Great story, entertaining funny and very sexy. Great performance also. Listening again. I live the interaction between characters
