Publisher's Summary

Sixteen-year-old Allie has already experienced a lifetime of horror, having lost her mother and serial killer brother to mental illness.

Returning to her childhood home in Louisiana, Allie ends up in foster care and is placed with Miss Bitty, an eccentric but kindly older woman who shows her a new direction and brighter future.

But Allie's new life takes a devastating turn when young women in the area start turning up dead, and she begins to see shadowy figures outside her bedroom. As Miss Bitty grows inexplicably distant, a nagging voice makes Allie wonder if death has found her yet again...or if it never really left her at all.

    Story
    "The title captured my interest!"

Allie is a damaged girl from a dysfunctional family: Her dad left her mother, Allie's older brother, and Allie to pursue a life of crime. Allie's mother was a prostitute who murdered many of her Johns. Her older brother killed many people including their mother before killing himself in front of Allie when Allie was 15 years old. Allie turns to a life of prostitution at age 15. My prior sentences merely set up the story.

Ugly Young Thing is an excellent psychological/suspense thriller made even better by outstanding narration.

"Don't need to read the first in series to enjoy"
What did you love best about Ugly Young Thing?

I did not read the first in this series, and it didn't matter. This story has a lot of surprising twists and the ending was such a surprise. It really held me and was not predictable. It's creepy and sad, yet there is a hopeful element as well. Looking forward to reading more by this author.

    "Spellbinding and Hungry for More!"

From the first chapter I was hooked--absolutely did not want to stop listening. Characters were so well defined and were alive for me! The book sucked me into it! Stimulating and at the end, I took a deep breath and wished Ms Biddy and Allie blue skies and green lights in their new home! Thanks, Jennifer, for another great story!

    Story
"Like listening to a story on repeat"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who like hearing the same information repeatedly.

What was most disappointing about Jennifer Jaynes’s story?

I could only listen to the description of Ally so many times. It was very tiresome to hear about her perky behind, long, lean legs, slender waist and hips, and perky breasts so many times. I was so bored.

How could the performance have been better?

They didn't have their own voices and the narrator's voice made me think of Mama June from Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Bored, bored, and bored.
