Publisher's Summary

Once again Liane Moriarty uses her unique, razor-sharp observational skills to sift through the emerging fault lines of seemingly happy families.

If only they'd said no....

What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself.

It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day.

Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

    "Not like the other books"

I'm a huge Liane Moriarty fan and unfortunately this book was a big disappointment. The story line went nowhere and the narrator made all of the characters sound bitchy and bad tempered.

    "Awful boring book, don't bother!"
What disappointed you about Truly Madly Guilty?

It just went round and round in circles about a bbq - it was awful, I couldn't even finish it

Has Truly Madly Guilty put you off other books in this genre?

No not really, this was the first audio book that I have chosen that I hated

Would you be willing to try another one of Caroline Lee’s performances?

No I didn't like her narration, she was too slow and tried some accents which were pretty bad

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

NO none at all. I kept listening waiting for some kind of climax about the bbq and nothing happened - I gave up

    "Don't Bother!"
What would have made Truly Madly Guilty better?

A different narrator. Caroline Lee's voice is unbearable to listen to.

What will your next listen be?

All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

What didn’t you like about Caroline Lee’s performance?

Her voice is horrible to listen to, the interpretation of character reading unconvincing. All that came through was the insufferable whine of her voice, especially when reading the children's words.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointing to listen to. I enjoyed reading Liane's other novels. I will try reading a paper copy of this book to see if I change my mind about this. Caroline's voice does it no justice.

    Any additional comments?

I'm returning this book to Audible and will never listen to anything narrated by Caroline Lee again.

"A taster of good things from Liane Moriarty."

Although the formula was great, and the story was good, the twist wasn't there that I have come to expect. A little predictable.
But, otherwise, still a good listen. If you haven't read/listened to any of Liane Moriarty's books then start with this one as they only get better and you'll appreciate this book more I think.

    "Hm...a little disappointing"

I have fallen head over heals in love with Liane Moriatie's books Big Little Lies, What Alice Forgot , The Husband's Secret and The Hypnoist's Love Story. I listened to every book 2 times and I find them brilliant.
I was impatiently awaiting the new book, Truly Madly Guilty. I had trouble getting into the story and into the characters. I missed the twinkle of humor that used to accompany her characters. Overall i struggled because I felt that the characters of this book were more about struggle, argument and more unhappy.
Without the excellent reading of Caroline Lee and without the colorful Tiffany and Vid I dont think I would have finished this book.

    "Awesome"

Awesome awesome awesome! I have come to truly enjoy Liane Moriarty. The way she writes is the way I think, and if I had only one negative thing to say would be that she sometimes rambles takes a while to get to the point. The near raider was awesome story was off and although I knew secret, I enjoyed the way the writer came around to it.

"Should have been three and a half stars."

This is one of those books that makes me wish that it was possible to review with half stars. Truly Madly Guilty is really better that a "three star" book but not quite a four mainly because the first part is AWFUL. Yes, I know. How is it possible that anything by Liane Moriarty could be awful? But the beginning of this novel truly is: boring and tedious (the characters and the plot), with everyone alluding to something awful that happened at a mysterious bar-b-q but which is not revealed. When the story FINALLY gets going (you still don't know what happened at the bar-b-q, but enough of the characters' past and motivations is revealed so that they're finally interesting), the novel IS great. Back to the regular Moriarty. But the beginning was unforgivably unedited. Almost as if someone else had written it and then handed it back to the real author. Still love her. Will still preorder her books. But this one was three and a half stars, not the usual five.

    "Awesome ability to build characters."

EventuallyI loved this book. The reason I say this is because I kept thinking I was missing something and we go back and listen to the previous chapter. Actually what was happening is the book was building on everyone's perspective of one tragic moment at a barbecue.

    "Getting too formulaic?"

This was my least favourite Liane Moriarty book. Can't decide whether I've listened to so many of hers that I'm bored with her formulaic style or whether this one really was lacking the usual charm.
One thing is for sure, if I'm going to read about an Aussie BBQ then I'd choose Christos Tsiolkas' version every time!

    "A big disappointment :("

I usually adore Liane Moriartys books and was really looking forward to hearing this one despite the poor reviews.
Unfortunately it was awful. I had to force myself to listen until the end and was glad when it was over.
I kept having to go back a few minutes as my mind had wandered off.
It was a LONG story too :(

I knew how this book was going to end. The story was ok, I did like how all characters perspectives were caught but the story was predictable.

The narrator told the story well and her dramatisation of the characters were excellent

    "Unexpected storyline"

I have read all Lianes work and when Thi story started I wasn't sure where it was going, slightly slow to start but then it twisted and turned with the most unexpected and unusual storyline which really worked, very thought provoking at times, very enjoyable and although the voice for Vid was slightly grating an excellent narration as usual by Caroline. Very good book. I recommend.
