Publisher's Summary

A long-awaited Lord Peter Wimsey novel, telling the story of his first case - and his last....

Jill Paton Walsh triumphantly completes Dorothy L. Sayers last unfinished detective novel, featuring Lord Peter Wimsey and his new wife, Harriet Vane.

It is 1936, and Lord Peter Wimsey has returned from his honeymoon to set up home with his cherished new wife, the novelist Harriet Vane.

As they become part of fashionable London society, they encounter the glamorous socialite Rosamund Harwell and her wealthy impresario husband, Laurence. Unlike the Wimseys they are not in love - and all too soon, one of them is dead. A murder case that only Lord Peter Wimsey can solve.

Beautifully read

I enjoyed this story: you cannot tell where Sayers finishes and Jill Paton Walsh begins. Ian Carmichael had played Lord Peter Wimsey on television and he inhabits the character demonstrating that Lord Peter Wimsey books really sound better when read by a man.

Great narrator, disturbing plot

Ms Sayers is acknowledged as a writer of feminist detective stories complicated by their class and race prejudice. This novel, finished by Jill Paton Walsh, perpetuates harmful stereotypes about women’s relationships. I recommend See What You Made Me Do by Jess Hill as an antidote.

Enjoyable and entertaining

Apart from the laughable attempt at a French accent at the start, the which my daughter and I thought was an attempt at a Welsh accent, I found the story easy to follow and entertaining. It had its good and bad bits, and but overall I would recommend it.

Very satisfying and engaging, loved the development of the relationships and particularly the Dowager Duchess.

A satisfying conclusion to the series.

Walsh seamlessly takes over the reigns from Sayers and has completed the work with care. Carmicheal brings a lot of character to the preformance and is a joy to listen to.
