Publisher's Summary

A group of old university friends travel to Unst to celebrate the marriage of one of their friends to a Shetlander. But late on the night of the wedding party, one of them, Eleanor, disappears. The following day, Eleanor's friend Polly receives an email. It appears to be a suicide note. And then Eleanor's body is discovered, lying in a small loch close to the cliff edge. Detectives Jimmy Perez and Willow Reeves are dispatched to investigate. Before she went missing, Eleanor claimed to have seen a ghost. Her interest in a ghost had seemed unhealthy to her friends. But Jimmy and Willow are convinced that there is more to Eleanor's death than they first thought.

    "Great story and performance"

This is not a nail-biting edge-of-your-seat thriller. It's a great classic British murder mystery, read wonderfully.

    "Easy listening"

Thought I'd give this a go after listening to some other Ann Cleeves books which were very good.

Compared to my usual twisted complicated plots this made a pleasant change and I did enjoy it. Narrator was easy to listen to, story was ok, did start to understand the characters - but not sure if it would have helped if I'd have listened to others first but still enjoyed the listen.

    "Engrossing!"

I enjoyed the story very much, it's very atmospheric, set in the Scottish islands amidst the fog. The narrator is brilliant and very good at changing from the Scottish accent to the English. He also made it easy to distinguish the characters by the different voices.
I think this is overall, a very good book and I will enjoy listening to it again in the future.

    "Struggling"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm not sure I would reccomend it. The story is probably a good one, but the narrator's voice, especially when taking on the female roles, sounds a little "pantomime dame"

What other book might you compare Thin Air to, and why?

Only the ones that I've previously returned.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    No.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    Frustration.

    Any additional comments?

Really disappointed in this book. It is really slow, but I'm not sure if this is the story or the narrator. I'm struggling to keep at it, as I do have others to listen to. I will however, try to stick with it, although it has put me off both the author and the narrator.

    "Another one soon. PLEASE!"

I hope to be seeing another book in this series soon. I enjoy being swept away with the people of the islands.
The stories are a perfect blend of familiarity and suspense and the narration is easy to follow with great characterisation and a smooth flowing style.

"Nice story but a bit slow"

I am a reader of Jack reacher, Clive Cussler et all. This is a nice murder mystery but quite slow paced especially in the first half where very little happens after the initial muder is discovered. I enjoyed it but a bit slow paced for me.

    Story
    "A ghostly murder ..."

Caroline and Lowrie, together with college friends, Eleanor and her husband Ian, Polly and her boyfriend Marcus, return to Lowrie’s hometown (Unst in the Shetland Isles) to attend their "hameferin', a Scottish wedding celebration. After the party, Eleanor disappears into ‘thin air’ and the following morning her body is found, neatly laid out on the beach.

Before her death Eleanor had claimed to have seen the eerie ghost of Peerie Lizzie, a young girl who had died on the shore in the 1920s, and there are indications that the deaths are linked. How can this be?

Willow Reeves, Jimmy Perez and Sandy Wilson are called in to head up the investigation.
There are lots of twists and turns to the story, but the clues are all there if only I could have solved them!

I made the mistake of picking up and reading this book before realising that it is Book 6 of the series, and now I just want to get Books 1-5 and read them in order! That said, this did not spoil my enjoyment of the book as there is enough background to realise that the main character, Detective Perez, is still recovering from the loss of his wife, struggling to make a new life for himself and his stepdaughter and that there is a very caring human side to his character. I am so looking forward to reading the other books in the Shetland series.
