Publisher's Summary

Sergeant Amy Callan and Lieutenant Caroline Cooke have a lot in common. Both were army high-flyers. Both were acquainted with Jack Reacher. Both were forced to resign from the service. Now they're both dead.

Found in their own homes, naked, in a bath full of paint. Apparent victims of an army man. A loner, a smart guy with a score to settle, a ruthless vigilante. A man just like Jack Reacher.

"Can I please have a refund?"

I suffered 40 minutes out of 14 hours but can go no further. Hayward Morse has no idea about who Jack Reacher is or how to portray his character. Hayward Morse also manages to make every female character sound like some lot lizard from New Jersey, including Jacks mum, who is French. It may be a good book, but if you can't listen to it, it's very bad.

So the story line was good but I have to wonder if the narrator has ever heard a female speak before because we defiantly don't sound like his imitations. No offense to the narrator but why put on a stupid ditsy voice for the female characters..

    "Ok Story, but awful narration"
Would you try another book written by Lee Child or narrated by Hayward Morse?

I would think twice before getting another book narrated by Hayward Morse. His reading voice is fine, but his characterisation is terrible.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

The ending was a bit predictable; I got there just quickly enough to make the ending an anti-climax.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

It took a while to get used to this narrator, but even then his character voices (and the female ones in particular), made it tough going. I even stopped and came back to it a couple of times, before i managed to get through to the end.

    Any additional comments?

I've read/listened to all of Lee Child's books. This is not one of his best, but even that still means it is an excellent book. I'd probably recommend reading this one, though, instead of listening to it.

"Good story but hard to listen to narrator"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No - good story but download to your kindle as reading the book would not be as grating as listening to it.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Visitor?

I like the story telling. I have not read or listened to the books in order so this is a much younger Jack Reacher. he shows confusion and hesitation not normally a trait of his. The relationship he started in previous book causes much of this confusion. I would have preferred the narrator from Tripwire to have continued into this book as he treated the female voices with more dignity than this narrator did.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Unfortunately the narrator makes the characters personalities very dumb or just down right belligerent.Jack sounds like a big dumb guy quite the opposite of the dead pan delivery Jeff Harding gives in most of the recent books, i like this because it is the way I hear Jack in my head.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The Narrator made me cringe on too many occasions. I would normally listen to the book twice. Not this time I did not have the energy to listen again.

    Any additional comments?

Looking forward to my next Jack Reacher audio book and Jeff Harding reading.

What did you like best about The Visitor? What did you like least?

I enjoyed the story, however I agree with every comment re the narration. It is awful. This really should be recorded again with a different narrator.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Every woman sounds like a brain dead banshee. I don't know how he made someone asking a question sound as dumb as a post or drugged out of their mind

This was my fifth Reacher in order and I was nervous due to previous readers complaints about the narration. To tell the truth while I was curious about the issues others reported I thought the narration was great and never missed a beat. As usual the story was always engaging.

"Average story severely compromised by narrator"
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Not really, no. The story itself was pretty average, but the narration made it all but unbearable.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I had it figured by the end of the third chapter, so was hardly surprised by the ending. Predictable and slow.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator's normal reading voice is fine, but his characters are horrible. Reacher sounds like something from Loony Tunes, every female sounds like a granny, and there's a fair bit of Pluto and Daffy Duck mixed in too. Reacher sounds like he is mentally impaired (no offence meant to those unfortunate souls), and the two supposedly hot women in the plot both sound like they are in their late eighties. Horrible.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Surprisingly, yes. I think it could make a fairly interesting film - if the possible baddies aren't revealed so obviously early in the storyline.

    Any additional comments?

This has been a low-point for me, in my Jack Reacher life. Echo Burning used to sit at the lowest rung of the ladder, but now that spot belongs to The Visitor. If I hadn't waited so long to start listening to this book, I would've returned it. The story was below par for Child, and the narration was terrible. No more Wayward Morse-read books for me - Jeff Harding does it so much better.

Would you be willing to try another one of Hayward Morse’s performances?

    "Compelling Read"

I do not know how, given that the quantity of books I have read, that I have not discovered Jack Reacher until after the release of the movie. And while the movie was good it is really not a representation of the character Lee Childs has developed.

I have found that on pretty good at working at the plot halfway through the book. But in this case I needed to go through to the last couple of chapters to give a full grasp of the mystery contained within. It is a real talent for an author to be able to do this and to keep you on the edge of your cheer all the way through the book.

The narration in this book fits the character of Jack Reacher. in a lot of cases the narrator is just telling the story that the author has put together. In this case I think Hayward Morse has added to the intrigue and suspense of the novel.

If you haven't been exposed to Jack Reacher, now is the time to start.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

this was yet another awesome Jack Reacher story, but the narrator was terrible. he hissed is sssss and the tones used for female characters made me feel sick. On top of that the recording quality was second rate, and made it sound like it was recorded in someones bathroom. I persisted in the hope that I will enjoy the next installment in Jack Reachers life without this narrator.

    "Good story, terrible narration"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

No, it's too hard to listen to with Hayward Morse narrating. He makes Jack Reacher sound like a dufus, and all the women sound whiney. I love Jack Reacher books, this is so far the only one I haven't enjoyed, and that is because of the narration. Not the best of the Reacher series either, a little bit predictable unfortunately. Still love every other Reacher book though.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

He didn't give a great portrayal of Jack Reacher with the voice he chose to use for him, made him seem slow and a bit dull. Jeff Harding and Dick Hill do an awesome job of narrating Reacher, (and all of the other characters in the books) just not Hayward Morse. If this was the first Reacher book I listened to, I would have given up.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No

    Any additional comments?

Try any of the other Reacher books narrated by Jeff Harding or Dick Hill.

Would you listen to The Visitor again? Why?

The funniest book yet. For a hardcore pulp fiction like book its very funny, in a good way. Clever humor as a natural part of the story.

What did you like best about this story?

As usual the story as a whole and the way all the pieces delightful fit together.

Help! The series is sooo addictive I cant stop listening!

Have you listened to any of Hayward Morse’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    NO

Who was your favorite character and why?

Reacher, Jack Reacher is the reason I buy these books.

What didn’t you like about Hayward Morse’s performance?

Poor and inconsistent voice acting. I.e. one characters voice bled into another. No pauses for new paragraphs, I could keep going but I don't have time

Most definitely the narrator, it was not enjoyable at all to listen to...I only persevered because I am going through the Jack Reacher series

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Visitor?

    When Hayward Morse finished reading.

What didn’t you like about Hayward Morse’s performance?

    "Terrible Narration"
What disappointed you about The Visitor?

I've got most of Lee Child's audiobooks & have enjoyed them, but if this had been the first book I'd listen to I doubt I would've got to the others.
The whole thing is ruined by the narrator, he make Jack Reacher sound like an idiot, I half expected to hear D'oh (from the Simpsons each time he spoke). I won't even try to guess what women he's heard speak, because his interpretation is terrible.
I has to give up after 30mins because it was driving me mad, I'd rather listen to finger nails down a blackboard.

What could Lee Child have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Changer the narrator

How did the narrator detract from the book?

His tone, his interpretation of Jack Reachers speech & his female characters speech

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Visitor?

Don't know I only made it through 30mins

    Any additional comments?

Re-record this book with Jeff Harding as the narrator

What did you like most about The Visitor?

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Unfortunately I guessed the ending so not as much of a surprise as previous novels.

I enjoyed the scene where Reacher gets help from his army buddies.

Jack Reacher novels are not hard to digest and much like watching a Die Hard/ Jason Statham/ Arnie movie... full of cliches. But they pass the time entertainingly enough.
I have listened to four now; Killing Floor, Die Trying, Trip Wire and now The Visitor.
Hayward Morse narrates all the women, who are supposedly smart, intelligent and capable (FBI agents, high flying solicitors, detectives,) with whiny, nasal voices that makes anything they stupid, pathetic and two dimensional. The intonation he uses in their given lines is appalling and really spoils the book. Such a shame as this one has quite a passable story line.

    "Hilarious narration"

I'm currently working my way through the Jack Reacher series and had to post a comment for this one in particular. This is because the latest narrator has done something truly spectacular with this book. He has taken a fairly straightforward crime/action story and turned it into a comedy masterpiece. It's appears that by trying to do a different voice for each and every character he has run out of realistic accents after about five, and then proceeds to base the remaining characters on cartoon characters. Inspired. The result is the funniest audiobook I have ever listened to. I especially liked the female characters' voices; they hit octaves I didn't think were possible and one character sounded like a cross between Minnie Mouse and Harley Quinn. Comedy gold.
