Publisher's Summary

Meet Molly Sutton, 38 years old and out of work, who moves to a village in France to recover from the end of her marriage. She's looking for peace, beautiful gardens, and pastry - a slower, safer life than the one she'd been living outside of Boston. But you know what they say about the best intentions....

Molly has barely gotten over jet-lag before she hears about a local student's disappearance. In between getting her old ramshackle house in order and reveling in French food, Molly ends up embroiled in the case, along with the gendarmes of Castillac. And unlike the Nancy Drews she loved as a child, this mystery stirs up emotions she thought had been put to rest...and terrifies the residents of her beloved village.

    Story
"Simple writing, light plot, calories-free littérature."

It's a simple story. The characters are bland. There isn't any real plot. It's not an offensive book but there isn't much to grab this auditor through anymore books in this series or by this author.

In two words: a diet book.

    "Great book!"

I thoroughly enjoyed both the quality of writing in the book, as well as the narration. Both well done!

    Story
    "Very Slow"

This book started of f very slow and did not improve. The writer spent too much time on Molly worrying about getting used to living in France than on her actually investigating the mystery. Then, all of a sudden, she puts all of the clues together and solves the murder. I didn't enjoy this book and I won't read another in this series.

    "Good read"

I really enjoyed this book I could have done without some of the French words they just seemed a little forced and didn't do anything for the story, yes, she was in France, but enough already. the characters fit the story, and it went pretty smoothly, a nice little murder mystery that I would recommend.

    Story
    "Disappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

A narrator with a decent French accent.

How could the performance have been better?

Having a narrator with a terrible French accent is one thing if she is speaking for a character with a terrible French accent. But when she uses it for a character who is meant to be a native French speaker, it is absolutely unacceptable.

What character would you cut from The Third Girl?

    Molly's fake boobs.

    Any additional comments?

I love books in series and was disappointed to get a first in a series book that I have no interest in following up.

    "Get past the narration"

If you can get past the illogical narration, with poor French pronunciation and the inexplicable placement of French accents in the narration, the story is somewhat interesting. Divorcee moves to France on a whim, buys an old house that she converts to gite, gets to know the locals, and helps solve a string of murders. OK summer read. Nothing more.

    Story
    "Ok story, awful narration"

The story takes place in France. Perhaps a narrator who is able to pronounce words and names in French would have been more appropriate. I found myself so annoyed with the pronunciation errors that it detracted from the story. Even with a good narrator, the story itself was simply ok. It is a fairly simple whodunnits without depth. I need to stop taking the two-for-one credit offers, since there seems to be a theme of humdrum story & poor narration among the offered titles...this one being one of them.

"Fun cozy mystery set in French countryside."
    Any additional comments?

The Third Girl by Nell Goddin is the first book in the Molly Sutton Mysteries, which is a delightful cozy mystery set in the French countryside. The story begins within hours of Molly Sutton arriving from Boston to a quaint village in France. Seeking a fresh start after a failed marriage, Molly purchases an old rundown country house near where she once attended college. Molly desires nothing more than to enjoy the community's good food and slower lifestyle. However, within a few days of moving into the area, one of the local art students vanishes without a trace. The rest of the story is figuring out what happened to the young woman.

I really enjoyed this story, which is well plotted and well written. What I loved most is the dialog between the characters as it flows naturally as if the reader is listening in on their private conversations. And the "who did it" caught me completely by surprise. As someone who frequently judges books by their covers, it's a shame the cover isn't more revealing of the delightful book inside, like so many othe cozy mystery covers are like.

I listened to the Audible version of this book narrated by Becket Royce who did an excellent job. Her style is very natural and conversational, with differing voices for all characters. In short, I definitely recommend this audiobook for fans of cozy mysteries!
