Publisher's Summary

FROM THE #1 BESTSELLING AUTHOR OF THE HARRY BOSCH AND LINCOLN LAWYER SERIES

An electrifying standalone thriller that breaks all the rules!

Death is reporter Jack McEvoy's beat: his calling, his obsession. But this time, death brings McEvoy the story he never wanted to write - and the mystery he desperately needs to solve. A serial killer of unprecedented savagery and cunning is at large. His targets: homicide cops, each haunted by a murder case he couldn't crack. The killer's calling card: a quotation from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. His latest victim is McEvoy's own brother. And his last...may be McEvoy himself.

Solid Mystery

Would you try another book written by Michael Connelly or narrated by Buck Schirner?

I liked this so much I got my hands on the second book as well, though I am bitterly disappointed to find there is only two McEvoy books as opposed to the 20 odd books in the bosch series. Regardless, I haven't read much serial killer fiction and it was kinda cool, if incredibly dated. Many twists to be had!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack McEvoy, he is unique as a main character in crime fiction, being that he was NOT a detective!

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Not particuarly. I didn't like the narration much, I found the voice to be droll and monotone. It did however give a very detective noir feel which was a positive.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

YES! This would make a great movie!

Great story, well developed characters

I enjoyed this offering so much, that I'm going to look for the next offering by the author in the series. Writte nin 2008, the characters didnt have as much tachnology (iPads, mobile phones etc) available to them today as modern writers, which honestly just made for a more interesting listen. I loved the way this story unfolded, and I was not able to identify the killer ahead of time . . . . I would definately recommend this title.

Great story

This is one of many good books Connelly had written. I read this years ago and the second sitting did not disappoint. I have read some mediocre crime novels written by other writers and should have stuck with the best. Good story and great twist.

A good read

This is the third novel that I have read by this author. He is very good at his craft if this is the genre you enjoy. Quite hard to stop turning the pages once you get going. It doesn't grab immediately, but it gets there pretty soon after.
The characters are believable, and the antagonist (paedophile) is really very creepy with tremendous descriptive writing, great plotting and lots of suspense.
I love that he used Edgar Allen Poe within the story line. A great touch that is very fitting.
My only qualm is that the motivation of The Poet is not completely clear and the opening could have grabbed the reader sooner. Hence my 4 star rating.
But I do think it is a great read.

Gripping from the first page

One of the best Connolys so far. Interesting and informative the whole way through. Five stars.

Rubbish!

Started out reasonably but about 3 quarters of a wqy in the author had the main character do something stupid. Not getting into it in case someone wants to listen to this book. But I would advise against it because it is dated now written 25 years ago and over all the book is not very well written.

Thrilling

I dint normally listen to murder miseries, and inspite of being immersed in a horrible topic for all those hours, it was very gripping. There was only one flaw, which is why did he not ask the other reporter who the source was?
Anyway, well narrated, good tempo, good twists.
