Mickey Haller gets the text, "Call me ASAP - 187," and the California penal code for murder immediately gets his attention. Murder cases have the highest stakes and the biggest paydays, and they always mean Haller has to be at the top of his game.
When Mickey learns that the victim was his own former client, a prostitute he thought he had rescued and put on the straight and narrow path, he knows he is on the hook for this one. He soon finds out that she was back in LA and back in the life. Far from saving her, Mickey may have been the one who put her in danger.
Haunted by the ghosts of his past, Mickey must work tirelessly and bring all his skill to bear on a case that could mean his ultimate redemption or proof of his ultimate guilt.

I never once wanted to stop listening to it and that in my opionion is the best recommendation that I could give to the author and the the narrator.
Of course Mickey Haller as he is the main character and the story is seen through his perspective.
That he kept me engaged the whole time that I did not want to stop listening is a testament to his reading of the book.
Well that would be a spoiler wouldn't it but the two death scenes were particular shocking and moving.
"Another great Connelly Book"
Yes I have read or listened every Connelly Book and enjoyed them all
All of the Lincoln lawyer series
The car accident
it actually being unabridged as advertised...otherwise great book but very upset that it misses cruical info
"Outstanding story and excellent narrative."
I really enjoyed the story line by Michael Connelly. As usual I could not stop listening to the story. Even found myself doing my grocery shopping listening as I was so glued to the story line.
I thought the narrative was excellent. Held my attention.
To be frank I thought they were all excellent characters.
"Another spellbinding Mickey Haller courtoom romp"
Connelly is a masterful writer whose awesome skills have never been more effectively applied than in this engaging story of the dangerous fight to set an (almost) innocent man free.
Having produced thousands of voice-overs, I'd have to rate Peter Giles up there with Humphrey Bower as one of the best narrators (actors) I've ever heard.
Courtroom drama, good dialogue and witty but too many characters made it abit hard to follow
no. Just an okay read
Captivating, memorable & appropriate
"Michael Connelly and Justice go hand in hand."
It was a great story line and the twists and turns. Connelly explains the legality of law proceedings with expert skill and is able to blend them into the story brilliantly. Thoroughly enjoyable!
Simply splendid, such easy listening.
Everyone deserves Justice!
I still love the short connections made with Harry Bosch.
The ins and outs of political and legal battles faced by Haller in his defense of his client.
Absolutely. The plot is full of unexpected but credible twists and turns.
Actually, I wasn't overwhelmed by his performance. He does a very good job using different voices but tends to be whiny.
It just kept me on the edge of my seat.
I've read and enjoyed all of Connelly's Bosch series but am enjoying the Mickey Haller books even more.
"Most likely the best Mike Haller story so far...."
I've always considered Mike Haller the byproduct of a diversification strategy where Bosh is the 'core business' ( and the best of all) , while books centered around other characters have the objective to sort of "give a break" to Mike Connelly and let him write without having to consistently reinvent great Bosh stories. This book sets for me a new paradigm; the character of Haller is now maturing , taking a shape and role that stand out on their own ( who cares anymore if he is Bosh half-brother ?). The story plot is as good as it gets, the different characters -including the recurring cast around Mike Haller- engaging and forceful and the reader/listener is hooked to the book from the very beginning.
The Gods of guilt is a great book and makes me - for the first time- look forward to the next Haller story....
"Good entertainment, great delivery."
The plot was engaging and entertaining with a good amount of suspense. The twists were believable and added to de story. This is an accomplished by the numbers thriller that will not change your life but will give you a good few hours of escapism.
The reader was great,
I had a very long journey to complete and being able to listen so such a good book was a tremendous help. None of it was boring, I enjoyed every bit as the story unfolded, especially Mickey's solutions to problem. There are a lot of references to the first book, bringing back old characters and explaining what has become of them. You were rooting for the good guys to win all the way and the book didn't disappoint.
His client is very different from the clients of previous books but I won't say why as it would be a spoiler. Needless to say, you'll understand if you've read the other books and read this book.
I'm not sure if I've heard him before but he was very good on this one.
I'd have happily listened to it in one sitting but it was a little too long to do that but I did finish it very quickly.
This'll be a book I'll listen to again and again.
"Kept me interested"
This book is certainly worth reading, I felt a little less sympathy for Mickey Haller than I have in previous books, somehow he started off by being a bit unpleasant, but seemed to improve in the course of the story. I need to be able to like the characters in a story.
The story was good and dealt with well. Overall I enjoyed the book
"Wow Epic !!!!"
Yes I would listen to this book again , It is an Epic book worth the listening experience, never wanted to put it down at all.
I can only compare this book to any of brad thor books
It was Epic , I loved the performance
I cold not put this book down , I finished it very quickly.
I really cant wait for a new part to this book, I await the next case.
"Another Gripping Michael Connelly"
This is another well read novel by Peter Giles and an interesting and exciting book by Michael Connelly. I like the structure of MC's novels, they contain enough technical legal procedure but don't over do it and along with that have a fast moving plot that keeps you interested in what happens next.
I also like the fact that MC does not take himself too seriously, with references in this novel to the film the Lincoln lawyer. If you like MCs other books then I think you will like this one too.
Hooked from the beginning. Easy to listen to. Clear story line. kept my interest even though I could predict what was going to happen.
"Good book with lots of nice twists but repetitive"
Yes, I've listened to the previous four books in the Mickey Haller series.
Less obvious signposting of "the gods of guilt" all the way through the book
"Nectar for the ears ...."
good narration but it was all in the story, luv'd it! I admit bias as I was long ago a fan of MC .
"Excellent - again!"
Having just finished the previous Mickey Haller book, I went straight onto this one and enjoyed it just as much. Great stories, great characters, great listen.
If I had been reading the book I would have given up. Too predictable and I didn't warm to any of the characters. Also I didn't enjoy the narrators performance which didn't help.
