Publisher's Summary

The No. 1 Sunday Times best-seller and WHSmith Book of the Year 2016

People are capable of almost anything.

Fast-paced and addictive, The Couple Next Door announces a major new talent in thriller writing.

You never know what's happening on the other side of the wall.

Your neighbour told you that she didn't want your six-month-old daughter at the dinner party. Nothing personal, she just couldn't stand her crying.

Your husband said it would be fine. After all, you live only next door. You'll have the baby monitor, and you'll take it in turns to go back every half hour.

Your daughter was sleeping when you checked on her last. But now, as you race up the stairs in your deathly quiet house, your worst fears are realised. She's gone.

You've never had to call the police before. But now they're in your home, and who knows what they'll find there.

What would you be capable of when pushed past your limit?

Twists and turns

Kept me guessing with a few curveballs. I liked the way the characters developed and we found out secrets about some that I I didn’t expect. I loved the ending: karma, although maybe I should think that 😉

Predictable

I found the narrator to be rather aggressive with a main character and she was hard to listen to as a result, but I persevered .
However, it was intriguing at times but sadly I found the ending to be rather typical, meaning I could guess it!

Starts great! But narrator starts too fast..

Then the narrator slows down and it's really well read but the story lacks any great GOTCHA moments..
I still happily listened to the end. A fun listen overall.

No bad

The story lacked a bit for me. The amount of times they refer to the baby as “the baby” rather than the actual babies name I found very annoying. Was interesting enough for me to listen to the end.

Not worth your money

I finished this book for the sake of finishing but the story was so ridiculous it was a chore.

A bit predictable

I had been anticipating this book for the longest time. I found it on Audible and I bought it with one of my monthly credits, and it has been sitting there for a while. I finally got around to listening to it..
I wish I could give it a higher rating than just three out of five but I wasn't hooked on it. The story itself wasn't too bad, however I found myself figuring things out quickly before they were revealed in the book, especially the "shocking twist" at the end..
The narrator of this story just didn't do it for me unfortunately. She made the characters (especially the main, female character) sound a little pathetic and I just wasn't connecting with either the characters or the narrator.
I know that I have managed to talk about all the negative things, but there were some good things also. The characters were dynamic and multi-dimensional and there was a good portrayal of mental illness - namely post natal depression.
I enjoyed how the author spoke from both main characters, we got an overall telling of the events, rather that just from one person's angle.
The writing style was enjoyable, the story flowed nicely, I didn't feel as though she went over things for too long.
I am interested to hear from anyone who has read/listened to this book and has a different opinion to me? Maybe the narration just ruined it a little, but it just did not click with me, which I am disappointed about, as I was looking forward to this one a lot!
Thanks for stopping by to read my review of The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena on audio.
Until next time, happy reading!

Good performance

Good performance. Story's pretty good - nothing too unexpected and characters uniformly unlikeable to me.
