Twenty years ago little Brian Arlington was kidnapped from his family's Long Island estate and was never seen again. The trail went cold, but investigative journalist Griff Hadley has always thought there was more to the story - much more. When the Arlingtons' patriarch invites him to stay at their estate to research his true crime book, Griff can't say no. It's the story of a lifetime. But not everyone is happy about Griff's presence. Relatives and staff alike regard him coldly, including Pierce Mather, the Arlingtons' attractive lawyer, who is more than a little wary of Griff's motives. When a stranger shows up claiming to be the long-lost Brian, Griff and Pierce are united in their suspicions. Startled to have found an ally in the buttoned-up lawyer, Griff soon realizes it's hard to keep a professional distance. Even in the midst of a groundbreaking investigation, even in the face of a shocking family secret....

"Possibly the most enjoyable mystery romance I've ever read! Quintessential Lanyon!"
When it comes to mystery and gay romance, no other author writes with the mastery and confidence of Josh Lanyon. His story pulls you in immediately and you know that you're in for a completely entertaining romantic adventure.
Lanyon seems to have a formula that always works and always feels new. I say "formula" only because his lovers tend to always start off at odds; one always seems more gruff, restrained, and in the closet. And circumstances conspire to bring the two together often until their mutual attraction is too compelling to ignore.
But I happen to really enjoy a love story where the lovers aren't hopping into bed in the second chapter, but instead have to learn each other's ways, work through misunderstandings and mistakes, and finally develop a true positive regard and appreciation for each other. The hot sex is the icing on the cake,
The mystery itself in this particular story was more moving and engaging because the main character is so very personally involved for the beginning. So much is at stake for him as much as for the possible suspects. Elements of the spoiled rich and class consciousness and references to The Great Gatsby all combine to lend a haunted atmosphere, both ethereal and dangerous. And classic Lanyon.
"Cinderfella Lives HEA"
An annoying protagonist, a hot attorney, decent sex scenes and a story with enough plot holes to drive Cinderella's carriage through add up to a mediocre read. Try Snowball in Hell instead.
"A great story and performance"
This was my first Josh Lanyon book but it certainly won't be my last. It was so well constructed with some great surprises along the way. Expertly read by Jeremy York.
Let me just say up front, that I adore pretty much everything Josh Lanyon writes. I was a little worried right off the bat, because I wasn't grabbed right away. There's a lot of unlikable characters, and it took me a little while to get into the story.
But once I was in, I was IN. Maybe it was all the talk about Gatsby, but this one seemed to be written in an older style, which I adored. And even though my audiobooks are supposed to be for at work listening, I couldn't help but finish this over the weekend!
"Josh Lanyon writes in the style of Hitchcock"
I must admit that at first I was unimpressed by the mystery that Mr. Lanyon wrote. However, as the story unfolded, it became clear to me that this was more thriller then mystery. Just like the classic Alfred Hitchcock hero who is in trouble and does not know why, we meet a young newspaper reporter from a small town who is given the chance of a lifetime -- to write about a modern Lindbergh baby kidnapping case with the permission of the family. Slowly but surely as the facts reveal themselves, much more is going on then just the investigation of a 25-year-old crime. Murder and mayhem collide until I was so engrossed by the story, I no longer cared that I figured out the solution to the central mystery only after the first few chapters.
This was a great story! What a read! Awesome characters and plot. And the romance..💓
!!!!! This guy can write!
"One of my favorite Lanyon of all"
And beautifully read. the story itself has such a unique premise that adds so much emotional impact to both the crime and the romance. great, flawed but awesome characters. love, love, love this book.
I have read many M/M books, including several by Josh Lanyon. Mr. Lanyon has been among my favorite authors in this genre, until now, when This book and author have become my clear favorites among all.
My favorite thing about this book is that it is written like any other more mainstream novel. There is a fantastic story line, with many interesting and well developed characters. Yes, the two main characters are gay men, but there is much more to them, and to the book than that. There are many twists and turns along the way to keep you interested and guessing.... Right to the very end.
You're going to enjoy this richly told story.
"Love Josh Lanyon books - another great one"
loved it - Josh Lanyon has great stories. I feel I know his characters well
A good story from one of the best in the M/M mystery genre. My only criticism is that the plot twist is fairly predictable in that I saw it coming pretty much from the beginning.
"Great mystery story"
Another fantastic story from Josh Lanyon with well drawn characters and a central mystery that, although I worked it out before the denouement, was still a pleasure to listen to it as it unfolded.
The narration was very good; there were a few instances where I had trouble differentiating between Griff and Pierce but overall it was very good & I didn't want to have to stop listening to go and do other things.
"Well plotted mystery"
An Agatha Christie style mystery with an outsider coming in to a wealthy family, and the clues all nicely hidden in the detail of the plot. A real pleasure.
"Nice mystery romance"
I enjoyed this very much. Well read, good plot with some twists which I didn't see cominf
