Story
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

A weekly newspaper dedicated to the weird and the wonderful (but mostly the weird), The Stranger Times is the go-to publication for the unexplained and inexplicable. At least that's their pitch. The reality is rather less auspicious. Their editor is a drunken, foul-tempered and foul-mouthed husk of a man who thinks little of the publication he edits. His staff are a ragtag group of misfits. And as for the assistant editor...well, that job is a revolving door - and it has just revolved to reveal Hannah Willis, who's got problems of her own.

Publisher's Summary
Slough House is Jackson Lamb’s kingdom; a dumping ground for members of the intelligence service who’ve screwed up: left a secret file on a train, blown surveillance, or become drunkenly unreliable. They’re the service’s poor relations – the slow horses – and bitterest among them is River Cartwright, whose days are spent transcribing mobile phone conversations. But when a young man is abducted, and it’s threatened that he’ll be beheaded live on the Internet, River sees an opportunity to redeem him.
Is the victim who he first appears to be? And what’s the kidnappers’ connection with a disgraced journalist? As the clock ticks on the execution, River finds that everyone involved has their own agenda….

Fine British Crime
Where does Slow Horses rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
This is one of the best crime novels I've read. Followed up by "Dead Lions", it was an absolute treat!
What did you like best about this story?
Extremely clever, credible plot and really unique characters.
Which character – as performed by Sean Barrett – was your favourite?
Lamb!!!!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, way too long and complex - but you also like to digest the story.
Any additional comments?
If in doubt, don't hesitate!

Slow Horses
is anything but slow. This story hits the road running and keeps the pace up right until the tantalising end. There isn't a single tedious moment, with action, intrigue and cool wit all keeping you utterly entertained every second. Sean Barrett, of course, is as brilliant as ever and still my favourite narrator. I can't wait to get onto the next in this series and any others written by this obviously talented author.

Disregard previous reviewer
The one who said the book should have been edited because Cartwright would certainly have been killed by the bomb in the first chapter. I won’t write a spoiler here but all I will say is listen carefully to Cartwright’s later musings and discussions with Spider because if you do, you’ll understand what really happened. It’s easy to miss so I can see why the other reviewer did, but it’s there.
This is an excellent book and series.

Did anybody edit or read this before publishing??
The main character “River”, opening scene; running beside an underground tube train, trying to stop a terrorist with a body bomb, the bomb exploded when he is .5 of a second away. 120 people dead or injured, £30m in damage. Next Chapter River is alive? No injuries, no scars, no limp, not a scratch!
The author and editor and anybody who read this book prior to hitting print should find another career.
You can't listen to a book when you keep questioning how did a guy a couple of yards from a body bomb that explodes and kills /injures 120 people escapes without a scratch?

Wonderful characterisation and good plot
Lead character Jackson Lamb is a completely vile potential goodie , scratching his underarms and sniffing his fingers in front of slick M15 female 'superior'. But there never are clean cut goodies and baddies in the spy world are there? Just people who hope that there might be a happy ending no matter what stuff ups happen along the way. A good read.

Entertaining and witty spy extravaganza
Mick Herron is certainly a master of the spy genre. It's a little bit like reading John le Carre with extra humour. Rather then a gradual progression of narrative, the story advances by deep pictures of individual characters interspersed with pacey and exciting scenes. Every character is flawed and complex. Noone is to be trusted. the greatest enemies lie within.
it's all jolly good fun, but also quite exciting. But there's a dark edge that sometimes runs close to the bone, pointing a spotlight atcontemporary tensions and characters. Boris Johnson has a double in this tale for example, which seems quite prophetic given this book's age.
The only downside is that sometimes we get so much back-story on characters that the story itself creeps to walking pace for a while before lurching forward again. But that's part of the style that i because used to as the book progressed.
A big thumbs up for the narrator, who suits this book perfectly, and is near to flawless.
I shall be moving immediately on to the next book in the series.

Spy thriller of the Year!!
This terrific novel is fast-paced, clever, complex and absolutely riveting. Sean Barrett’s performance is perfect-it’s as though you’re wrapped in a comfortable and expensive leather chair, drinking top shelf brandy and getting your head into a book that will have you saying “no no no” as the characters fight the clock and each other.
An taught beauty of a spy thriller!!!!

This novel keeps the listener on their toes if they wish to follow the storyline. It can change so quickly. Interesting concept too. Left and right political agendas and corruption within everyone’s grasp.
