When he was the NYPD’s top homicide investigator, Dave Gurney was never comfortable with the label the press gave him: super detective. He was simply a man who, when faced with a puzzle, wanted to know.
He was called to the investigative hunt by the presumptuous arrogance of murderers - by their smug belief that they could kill without leaving a trace. There was always a trace, Gurney believed. Except what if one day there wasn't?
With Shut Your Eyes Tight, John Verdon delivers on the promise of his internationally best-selling debut, Think of a Number, creating a portrait of evil let loose across generations that is as rife with moments of touching humanity as it is with spellbinding images of perversity.

"Never Shut Your Eyes"
This book had me from the start, the narration was fantastic. Dave is a retired NYPD cop with a history and one bad case where I presume he was nearly killed and he moved to the country with his 2nd wife Madeline. Dave has a son whom he seems estranged from and another son who died. Dave craves a bit more excitement than watching the asparagus grow. His wife seems quite content. Dave gets sucked into just one more case because of his talents for working out puzzels. I won’t go into the storyline you can read it. He makes a lot of progress on the murders, many interesting characters twists and turns. He thinks nothing of letting his wife know his whereabouts etc., job comes first. Great suspenseful read.
"Top rating for a great reading of a gripping story"
I'm still new to this so its in my top two of my four books so far!
I took a chance on this, I'm new to detective stories, with the exception of Sherlock Holmes.
I'm very glad I did as the story has been gripping, without being gruesome and enthralling for the duration.
Very good at portraying the individual characters, if I missed a piece of narrative regarding a characters name, I found it easy to know who it was by the readers' voice.
A disturbing crime but a great story, (although because of the narrator I kept expecting Jack Reacher to show up)
"A tight twisted plot"
This is my first John Verdon book and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main character Dave Gurney is a frustrated retired detective who needs to use his grey cells, but is torn between a gory case and his wife who wants him to stay at home and enjoy retirement. What starts as as one murder spirals into a sick twisted plot which brings danger to everyone involved. The book was well narrated by Jeff Harding with his gravelly voice and characterisation. and I would definitely recommend
An intriguing and well thought out book. I never wanted it to finish , the reader is superb. I shall be signing up for anything else this guy writes.
"They said it was a page turner..."
I stuck with it until the end, but I can't say I enjoyed it all that much. The narrator really got on my nerves most of the time. The only character that I enjoyed was jack. All his female voices were the same. A lot of the time I was screaming in my head for him to just get on with it. Never mind the inane waffle, stick with the story. Not a page turner for me.
"A really enthralling detective story"
A well written and very enjoyable detective story. It was also well-read (American accent was fine).
I haven't read any other books by this author but this story stands well on its own. i would certainly reccomend it.
"My eyes were open"
Good story and I liked listening to the reader. The end was not a surprise, but getting there was a suspense. I enjoyed it and I am looking forward to my next book by the author.
"Great twisting tale"
The main character is wonderfully likeable and intelligent
The take is twisted in a Gordian knot that only he can unravel
Jeff Harding has a superb voice and he brings the characters to life with great skill. I would listen to him read anything
"Good story predicable ending."
Have just discovered john verdon. He writes a good tale - the tendency to have long "dream" sequences doesn't help in my view. The icing on the cake of course is the effortless narration by Jeff Harding. A lesser narrator and I probably wouldn't have carried on with it. Shame he has only written 3 books so far. Well worth a listen
What a brilliant book- fantastically read with brilliant accents and excellent characters- each with distinctive voices.
Really good- highly recommended from start to finish.
"What a frustrating book sometimes stupid"
What a frustrating book sometimes stupid the brilliant detective could suss out the most complex plans but was stupid at solving the simple one - it was annoying & I wanted to give up listening to this book.
What frustrated me the most were the long gaps in between chapters stopping the flow of the book which also annoyed me.
Narration was ok
