Publisher's Summary

Simon Serrailler has just wrapped up an exhausting and difficult case for SIFT – Special Incident Flying Taskforce – and is on a sabbatical on a Scottish island when he is recalled to Lafferton. Two local prostitutes have vanished and are subsequently found strangled. By the time he gets back, another girl has disappeared. Is this a vendetta against prostitutes by someone with a warped mind? Or a series of killings by an angry punter? But then one of the Cathedral wives goes missing, followed by another young married woman.

    "just bliss"

I can't rate the combination of Susan Hil and Stephen Pacey highly enough. Her writing is so natural, and the characterisation and dialogue are more important to me than the plots (of which there are always several on the go). His narration is perfect. Each member of the cast has such a distinctive voice that even when a scene opens with dialogue I always know who is speaking.
I have really got to know the characters well over the five books, and Susan Hill is not afraid to kill key members off, in a way which is very lifelike.
I'm just sad that I've reached the end of the audiobooks, though I think she has written at least one more.

    "Excellent story"

I've enjoyed a number of Susan Hill's books featuring her interesting and sensitive detective Simon Serrailler. I thought this was the best so far. The main characters are believable and make an impression on ones mind. The book is not only a pacy detective story but also fleshes out the personal and working relationships of Serrailer which adds an extra dimension of enjoyment.

    "enjoyed every word"

I am a great fan of all of Susan Hills work. This one was excellent. the characters are well written and you care what happens to them. You feel truly sorry when one of the main characters disappears and is a victim to the strangler. I did guess who the strangler was just over half way along, but even so it was v enjoyable to see the plot develop.

    "As good as ever"

I always enjoy The Simon Serrailler series as they paint a picture of the community. My only slight quibble was the choice of murderer - I did not think we were given quite enough clues to make it a convinving selection.

    Story
    "bit of deja vue"

brilliantly narrated as always by Steven Pacey. writing is crisp, well observed and as competent as always. Trouble with this story is the denouement is identical to one of her previous books - police have no idea who the killer is till he walks into the kitchen of an associate and tries to kill them. Unlikely to the point of laughable but that being said it is a good read. Susan Hill has the excellent technique of making you care and share with the victom's murder and at times I find this quite disturbing.

    Story
    "Dissappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less packing, more of the murder story

What could Susan Hill have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Cut out all the incidental stories, main topic could have been a short story

What about Steven Pacey’s performance did you like?

    Very good

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Shadows in the Street?

    most of them

    Any additional comments?

Compared to other Serrailer books I have read I found this boring

    "Entertaining and gripping"

Susan Hill and the fabulous Simon Serrailler bought to life by the unmistakable voice of Steven Pacey has done it agsin. Each book gets better and better. Can't wait to continue the story of this complicated policeman who I think I am a little bit in love with!

"Is this the end of the road?"
What did you like best about Shadows in the Street? What did you like least?

I like the familiar characters and places

Would you recommend Shadows in the Street to your friends? Why or why not?

This 5th book in the Simon Serailler series is slower and less interesting than earlier books

    Any additional comments?

I hope that this book is just a blip. Generally this is a great series of stories which I have thoroughly enjoyed but this latest one is slow and predictable - so easy to guess the killer from the very beginning

    Story
    "Well-written, good story"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes - Susan Hill is an excellent writer and the plots are reliably good

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm not sure - I am definitely not keen on Simon Serailler himself, but I think that is in some ways the author's intention. I always like the characters around him, which is why I keep listening.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Steven Pacey?

I have listened to all the Simon Serailler audio books, so yes. However I don't love how the actor voices female characters as they always sound rather simpering. I realise it's difficult for a male voice to do the opposite sex (and vice versa), but it is rather irritating.
