When Deputy Coroner Mattie Winston and her boss/best friend, Izzy, are called to the home of waitress and part-time model Shannon Tolliver, they find the ghoulish Halloween decorations a bit too authentic. Among the fake blood and skeletons is the corpse of Shannon herself. Since the whole town knows Shannon recently had a very public spat with her estranged husband, Erik, he's suspect number one. But Mattie happens to know Erik truly loved his wife, and is simply incapable of the brutal act - even if he owns the exact same caliber handgun as the murder weapon.… Determined to unearth the truth, Mattie puts her scalpel-sharp medical skills to work, and digs a little deeper. What she uncovers is stranger than anyone could have imagined.…

"Good Series, Nix the Stupid Sexual References"
The premise of the series is sound. Mattie is a character you want to root for and the predicaments in which she finds herself are quite funny. These are light, fun murder mysteries easy to follow but not necessarily predictable.
I'm not sure any other character besides Mattie is drawn out enough for the reader to have a favorite, other than her. Having said that, Mattie is a great character. She has flaws and insecurities every woman can relate to and yet the situations in which she lands are outrageous enough to make you laugh and think "phew...that would never happen to me."
Nasal, Questionable Accents
No.The book is perfectly suited for my long, daily commute, but unfortunately I cannot listen to the narrator for hours. She sounds like she has a cold. Her portrayal of the male characters are good, but her attempt at the Wisconsin accent is spotty. One example, the main character's sister seems to have the Wisconsin accent (sometimes), yet the main character does not.The stories, the murder mysteries are very entertaining and Mattie's POV with her nursing training provides a unique sleuthing technique. I love that she knows everyone in the small town based on her knowledge of their very private medical problems.
The main character, Mattie, is 37-38 years old. Enough with the stupid sexual references to male body parts and other such similar teenage-boy, frat house chat. I don't know of any female, let alone, a mature, smart, woman who speaks like that. A little bit is funny, the rest is eye-rolling and tiresome. In this book, the 87 year old Bjorn's continued references to his "Peter" were beyond nauseating.
"I have found another good series"
This was an entertaining and enjoyable book. Mattie is an intelligent, realistic character who I would like to now in real life. The supporting cast are also people who are realistic and likeable. There were many instances when I either laughed out loud or hid my face in embarrassment. The scenes with Bjorn are funny and sad. They show another dimension of Mattie that only makes you like her more. I think this will be a great series and I look forward to the next book.
"Funny series with frustrated lust"
I really get a kick out of this hysterical series. For me it balances just enough mayhem to keep the mystery going without being dark or violent. I also enjoy the romance, although it I kind of cheesy and I suspect guys might not go for that aspect.
I wish the narrator checked a pronunciation dictionary as she slips up on several words. She also switches voices at the wrong time on several occasions which makes it a bit confusing.
"Better than book 1!"
When you have a good narrator, listening to the audio version of a book is much better than reading the print version and this narrator is great. She really brings Mattie alive. I couldn't stop laughing during this book. Love the Anywhere, Nowhere and Somewhere bar description compared to Abbott and Costello
I also loved the scene when she drove her hearse to a scene and picked up the tail from a funeral home. It was somewhat predictable, but irresistible.
It made me laugh!! I didn't want to stop reading.
"Well written , humorous and imaginative ."
It would rank amongst the top ten. Would gladly listen / read another.
A number of laughs through out.
"Nice cozy. Really poor reader"
Find a narrator who understands the use of the pronunciation guide in a dictionary. In a medical drama, one expects unusual terms. One does not expect that the narrator is too lazy to look up the terms. It was not only medical terms, however, and was very distracting.
Short books with reasonable interest level. Low intensity read, but certainly enjoyable.
Audio editor could review reading. Mispronunciations are very annoying.
"A fun listen"
I enjoyed this one just as much as the first, though Mattie did do a few stupid things that irritated me. Laughed out loud again, several times, and chuckled quietly even more. Still enjoying the audiobook narration. The reader continues to mispronounce some words but it makes me chuckle. Overall, she does a great job. I definitely recommend reading book 1 first to get the full affect of the existing relationships and backstories.
"Second one no better"
I gave the second book the chance to get more into the mystery side of thing, it was a mistake. Again the main character was the focus not solving the crime. I had thought that after the first book it would have been focused on solving the murder, but the author seems to be more interested in charters not the mystery.
"I don't like her"
she is good
This woman is a clutz falling over a root gazing at a guy she likes while on the job and having just fallen down a hill is moronic. Falling into a body where she is supposed to be containing a scene is termination.
This book was slow and characters lacked depth. The plot lines were similar to Evanovich's Stephany Plum without the humor. I tried the first book and tried the second hoping for better story line. I quit these books and started a reread of Evanovich. So much better.
