Simply exceptionally. I completely lost myself to the story. I laughed when the characters laughed, I cried when the characters cried. The narrator's did an amazing job in bringing the characters alive from the texts. I'll remember this book for a very long time.
the female narrator was likeable - i didnt have to get used to her voice.
the male narrator was outstanding. really!! he made me cry.
pay attention becus karin doesnt waste any time. this book was perfectly edited.
theres no way they can ruin this into a movie.
i felt things i havent felt in books before.. ive never cried becus of a book..
it had its downsides though. not every storyline can be perfect right? and thats what makes it real!
twists n turns in every chapter.. story lines that unfold through characters.. when one character makes u question somethin, another will unknowingly help u. so every character feels vital.
just listen to this audio already!!!!
Gruesome. But unable to stop listening ended up sitting in my car outside work because I had to know what happened next. Plenty of plot twists
The first few chapters I wasn't sure, but the more I listened it started to all connect up. Many twists, lots of suspense! I finished this book within 3 days as I couldn't stop listening!
You won't want to stop listening, just to find out what the next twist is! This is one you'll need to concentrate on to full immerse yourself in the experience, not a background book.
The characters are just so believable, pitiful, and engaging. Karin Slaughter effortlessly creates a vivid picture of the environments, people and energy throughout.
The performance is unobtrusive and didn't distract from the story - as it should be.
I liked the different narrators and each person's perspective on the same situation. It had tense moments and touching scenes. Quite gory though.
Yes, chapters 28 and 29!!! I have listened/read other books by Karin, but this book by far is the best!!!
"Riveting. Can't Put down. Love Karin Slaughter"
Pretty Girls is the thriller version of the 2014 books of the year--the ones that slowly unravel the complexities of individuals. so slowly that it drains the reader .The difference with Pretty Girls is that there is NO fluff, no psychological babble--EVERY word written has significance and is gripping. Pretty Girls is about 3 sisters, one murdered long ago, and their parents vert different way of dealing with the pain. The 2 living sisters are estranged and living very different lives, but come together in a can't put down story where EVERYTHING is linked.
It's all memorable. Please stop reading this review and buy the book. If you love psychological thrillers, this book is for you. Karin Slaughter can be a gory writer, but this book is not like that, although it is graphic in nature.
The narrators did an amazing job of voicing the characters. I can't put a finger on a favorite character. I would have to say Lydia, the tough and resilient sister. I loved her most because I loved her boyfriend.
Extreme reaction--LOVED this book. It's in my top 10 of 1000's. I read everything of Karin Slaughter. She's in my top 5 of favorite authors.
Why are you still reading this? Go get the book!
"Karin Slaughter best novel"
Karin Slaughter is one of my favorite writers. I'm a fan Grant County series and Will Trent series as well as her stand alone novels. Pretty Girls, a well written psychological thriller, may be her best work yet. It is easily the best of the 50 or so novels I have read or listened to this year. Read other reviews here and at amazon.com to learn more about the book. My intent in writing this short review is to say (1) you need to read this excellent novel and (2) the audiobook version narration is exceptionally good.
I'm glad I decided to buy the audiobook rather than the Kindle version. Jennifer Woodward does a fine job as primary narrator, but Robert Slade's reading of her father's letters to the long dead Julia Scott is haunting and wonderful; Slade's tone is pitch perfect.
"Can't believe I'm saying this....better than the Will and Sara series...oh my!!"
I usually rate books but never leave comments...this time however I am completely blown away by this story!! I became a huge fan of Karin Slaughters after reading Lisa Gardner and was hooked from book 1...I was devastated when I completed the last in the will and Sara and had to wait. Honestly Pretty Girls is interesting, disturbing, funny and dark just the way I like em!! I laughed, cried and everything between! The narrator was also phenomenal and picked up on every nuance...great job to Karin and the entire audio production crew...wish I could listen all over again!!!
"Painting with word."
Karen Slaughter writes very vivid pictures in her book. Can't turn pages fast enough. Thanks
"Gripping thriller from start to finish!"
I have not read the print version but the audio version was extremely well done. Excellent performances! Brilliant story and unpredictable plot.
Similar to Karin Slaughter's Grant County thrillers, this story is well constructed with believable characters. The villain is a complex character but his/her acts are pure evil! The protagonist tends to receive help from an unexpected source and there are twists and turns the whole way through the book.
I enjoyed the end scene. After reading a very thrilling book where the protagonists encountered one setback after the next, and it seemed all hope was lost, it was wonderful to see them take back their power in the end. I won't say more and spoil the ending for you - but this was a really powerful scene.
I was very disturbed at times when the story became too violent. The villain is particularly wicked and his abuse of women is diabolical. These scenes are quite graphic and fortunately, not that long or frequent.
Karin is a master storyteller and this is one of the best I've read so far. Highly recommended!
"I really enjoyed this listen!"
Very engaging story and will definitely refer this book to friends. I will check out Ms. Slaughter's other works.
Had a great story line. Believable characters. I really enjoyed listening. Can't wait for more.
I must have lead a very sheltered life but I found this book stomach churning in places. I also found myself questioning why this depravity had been allowed to go on so long
unaccountable .The only reason I perservered to the end was because I hoped there would be a plausible explanation but NOPE.
I know this goes against all other reviews but it is how I felt after listening to this book.
Although the content was gruesome the storyline was excellent. Very fast paced and sprinkled with sarcastic humor, which is expected in a Karin Slaughter novel. The narration was great. I particularly enjoyed Mr. Slades performance and felt it provided a good infusion of quiet sincerity in contrast to Ms. Woodward*s relaying of the balance of the story. Both narrators did an excellent job portraying the characters. Accents were spot on.
I like Karin Slaughter and this is her best yet. Although long it is attention grabbing and I just couldn't stop listening to it until the end. Often the twists and turns in novels are telegraphed but not here. The story and tension slowly builds and allows the listener to really start to experience emotions concerning the different characters. Excellent book.
Got tricked by the good reviews. Not only is this poorly written and formulaic, it needlessly dwells on torture porn style details. Don't understand how it's so popular or well received.
"fab but horrifying
be aware that at times this i's very graphic and upsetting.that said addictive and a fantastic story
Brilliant, too real, funny, vivid, 'un-put-down-able', sad, horrifying, beautiful, funny, gripping, amazing. I love this book.I didn't want it to end.
"Loved this story"
OK, a little graphic at times but overall a very good story that had me hooked from start to finish. Looking at other books by Karin Slaughter now as I really enjoyed this one. Very well read as well. The mix of the male and female narrators was very well done.
"Wow Wow Wow ."
This is not the type of book I would normally listen to, but I was swayed by all the good reviews. I couldn't stop listening. I had to know how it ended. Yes it was violent and horrific in parts, but so captivating right from the start.
This book has gone straight into my top ten. Well written, well narrated.
Loved this book. I'm a big fan of James Patterson / Peter James.....this was kinda similar. So clever - kept listening constantly. Great twists and turns - loved it.
"gripping from beginning to end"
This book made me cry... brilliant story touched my heart. The narrative was capivating .....excellent
I was drawn into the story immediately. I loved the characters, the plot and the twists and turns. The narration is 5/5! Highly recommend
"Good story throughout"
