Publisher's Summary

A chilling and compelling debut crime thriller set in South East London. For all those who enjoy Peter James, Mark Billingham, and Peter Robinson. Three women have been found brutally murdered in south London, the victims only feet away from help during each sadistic attack. And the killer is getting braver.... Sarah Grainger is rapidly becoming too afraid to leave her house. Once an outgoing photographer, she knows that someone is watching her. A cryptic note brings everything into terrifying focus, but it’s the chilling phone calls that take the case to another level.

DI Mike Lockyer heads up the regional murder squad. With three bodies on his watch, and a killer growing in confidence, he frantically tries to find the link between these seemingly isolated incidents. What he discovers will not only test him professionally but will throw his personal life into turmoil, too.

After 10 years in London, working for a City law firm, Clare Donoghue moved back to her home town in Somerset to undertake an MA in creative writing at Bath Spa University. Never Look Back is her first novel and in 2011, whilst still an unpublished manuscript, was long-listed for the CWA Debut Dagger.

I really enjoy Imogen Church's narration. Listened over 2 days whilst doing a very boring job. Helped pass the time admirably.

Would you listen to Never Look Back again? Why?

Yes I would listen to this again just in case I missed anything the first time and I was very impressed that I wasn't saying 'ya right' as the story continued through each chapter.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

    I liked the narrators

    "Thriller? Whodunit? Neither"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

It might be OK for someone really interested in the inner life of police officers and victims dealing with violence on a daily basis.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Probably a historical novel

How could the performance have been better?

The male narrator does a good job but I fear the female narrator is a bit whiny.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

The plot doesn't hold together but the chief inspector's character is well portrayed.

    Any additional comments?

Please note that my critical comments are born of misplaced expectations: I expected a police thriller but got a psychological novel.

    Any additional comments?

This was a well researched and very well written story with good readers. The story concentrates on building the characters, procedure and the locations and is, thankfully, not over heavy on gore and sexuality. Looking forward to the next book in the series.br/>

Good narration allowed me to enjoy this story. By the time I'd hit the last fourth of the book, I couldn't turn off the audio. An unexpected twist made it all the better!

    Story
"Reads exactly like a BBC mystery script"

It seems the author has decided she wants to write a book that can go straight to BBC mysteries. Character information is parsed out in tiny threads--the reader must stay tuned to get more information. The description of the detective was something like this: looks like a movie-star from Hollywood but a bit rougher. This wasn't meant to read, it was meant to be made for TV--especially because the very simple basic crime isn't worth a full-length novel.

    "Female authors writing male roles"

Enjoyed the book and seldom write negative reviews. This one kept me entertained throughout and was worth the purchase.

Tend to avoid female authors as the Venus/Mars boundary seems too wide for females to write male roles well. Our hero in this story line was well written.

Toward the end, I did find exception.

From childhood up, we males are ingrained with an "I am the protector" mentality. Failure to fulfill that role is devastating, not trivial.

    "An excellent debut"

Although this debut from Clare Donoghue does not quite live up to the hype it is an excellently written, constructed and characterised thriller. I did find myself completely gripped by it and found it to be something a little different from many of the current psychological thrillers. I always love multiple voices narrating as it seems to bring the story alive and the narrators here are excellent. I will definitely be watching out for what Clare Donoghue does next.

    "Always like a crime story....."

Not a bad debut at all. The characters are well thought out and the story moves a long at a good pace. I didn't think it lived up to the hype but was a great start and I will look forward to the next one.

    Great narration and good story.

    "Modern detective story"

Whilst the story is fairly well crafted it doesn't deserve the hype or the comparison with Peter James' novels. The fear and tension of being followed was well done but it didn't stick in my mind for long after I had finished listening.

    "A most enjoyable read"

This is an exciting thriller and the idea of using two narrators is excellent as this avoids a female reader doing exaggerated husky voices and for a male reader to try out irritating soprano efforts. Mike Lockyer the detective is extremely likeable and human. The intrigue is led at an agreable pace. This is my first encounter with Clarie Donoghue and I look forward to reading other books by this promising author.
