Predictable and irritating

I am a barrister. Not a week goes by without someone asking me "how do you defend someone if you know they are guilty?". How I answer this, depends on whether or not I have the time or energy to explain that my belief has nothing to do with representing an accused person and has everything to do with dealing with the facts. Lily's constant agonising over whether or not she believed her clients was therefore highly irritating to me. Obviously the writer has done enough research to know some of the systemic parts of criminal procedure but I wish she had gone further and spoken to barristers about the principles of defence work. Instead she has lazily reverted to popularist thinking and that does not do her credit. I expected more from an intelligent person. It would have a better story if she had challenged that misconception through her character, Lily.

If you enjoy crime thrillers that have nothing to do with reality - listen to this one

I had great hopes for this listen. The story was well paced and had an intriguing beginning, but 1/3 into it I was starting to get "yeah right" feeling. I like crime novels that could have happened in real life with well developed characters and realistic plots that keep you guessing to the end - this one with its twists couldn't be more removed from reality. Disappointing.

Most Unlikeable Protagonist Ever

Hard to say which of these characters is most unlikeable. Lily, the protagonist, is... awful. And I think the author intends us to empathise with her. Find some common ground; feel linked by human frailties etc etc. nope. She's shallow, self righteous, self obsessed, money obsessed, immoral, hypocritical... totally unlikeable. She has an excuse for every one of her terrible actions & manages to blame other people & circumstance for absolutely everything. The other characters are equally totally unlikeable - to such an extent that I nearly stopped listening several times - I just didn't care. They were all equally horrible & deserving of disaster. Sadly, it felt like the author wanted to make a grand statement about the monster within all of us, the good/bad dichotomy. But the story was fairly pedestrian. Predictable & ultimately an unsatisfying " not quite" at the end. The Italian characters were portrayed as quaint & naive "peasant" folk, & the claims about Aspergers syndrome were really generalised & somewhat stereotypical. I wouldn't read anything else by the author on the "strength" of this.

Really did not enjoy

Unrealistic, annoying characters. Struggled to the end to see what happened, so I suppose that's something.

Love kills

It was read very well and I enjoyed the story very much. Pesonally I would have liked to experienced more of Lillys romance rather than just a overview. Besides my personal romantic preference I really enjoyed the story.
