I am a barrister. Not a week goes by without someone asking me "how do you defend someone if you know they are guilty?". How I answer this, depends on whether or not I have the time or energy to explain that my belief has nothing to do with representing an accused person and has everything to do with dealing with the facts. Lily's constant agonising over whether or not she believed her clients was therefore highly irritating to me. Obviously the writer has done enough research to know some of the systemic parts of criminal procedure but I wish she had gone further and spoken to barristers about the principles of defence work. Instead she has lazily reverted to popularist thinking and that does not do her credit. I expected more from an intelligent person. It would have a better story if she had challenged that misconception through her character, Lily.
Will definitely look for more by this author..The reader is one of the best I've ever listened to.
Thank you! Such a wonderful well sort story! I absolutely LOVED that the narration!....This story had the perfect twists right to the very end just simply clever! BRILLIANTLY THOUGHT OUT JANE Thank you...
It was read very well and I enjoyed the story very much. Pesonally I would have liked to experienced more of Lillys romance rather than just a overview. Besides my personal romantic preference I really enjoyed the story.
I had great hopes for this listen. The story was well paced and had an intriguing beginning, but 1/3 into it I was starting to get "yeah right" feeling. I like crime novels that could have happened in real life with well developed characters and realistic plots that keep you guessing to the end - this one with its twists couldn't be more removed from reality. Disappointing.
The story keeps you guessing. One minute you thought you knew and next minute it's something else. Two strong characters, beautifully developed - read by two great narrators. Thoroughly enjoyed it
Hard to say which of these characters is most unlikeable. Lily, the protagonist, is... awful. And I think the author intends us to empathise with her. Find some common ground; feel linked by human frailties etc etc. nope. She's shallow, self righteous, self obsessed, money obsessed, immoral, hypocritical... totally unlikeable. She has an excuse for every one of her terrible actions & manages to blame other people & circumstance for absolutely everything. The other characters are equally totally unlikeable - to such an extent that I nearly stopped listening several times - I just didn't care. They were all equally horrible & deserving of disaster. Sadly, it felt like the author wanted to make a grand statement about the monster within all of us, the good/bad dichotomy. But the story was fairly pedestrian. Predictable & ultimately an unsatisfying " not quite" at the end. The Italian characters were portrayed as quaint & naive "peasant" folk, & the claims about Aspergers syndrome were really generalised & somewhat stereotypical. I wouldn't read anything else by the author on the "strength" of this.
Really enjoyed this book. I listen on my way to work and have got through many books over the last few months. This is probably in my top three. Well drawn characters, gripping story and fantastic performances!
"Enjoyable and relaxing read"
Great book, with an interesting plot, relaxing to read as there isn't too much going on or any real cliff hangers yet its still interesting, very cleverly written. Would recommend for someone looking to read something interesting, relaxing yet not boring!
A fantastic story, believable and at times human, the narration was brilliant, a wonderful voice.
"Strong characters growing as the story builds ..."
Couldn't wait to hear how this unraveled & built all at the same time. Strong characters .
Enjoyable narration & this book just fitted the bill.
"Too much of everything trying to make too much ."
I started thinking it would be an interesting story but ended up not liking any of the characters and didn't care how it ended. I fear the author kept trying to make it more interesting by adding what they thought were twists in the story. If this is chic lit it's not for me.
"A life story"
Was wondering all the way through why the story was given the title it was and finally found out. Fascinating tale of the past, present and future with some very terrible outcomes. Be careful what you wish for is a strong message throughout. Enjoyed the narration, which is a big plus for me as some bad choices can make or break a very good storyline.
I enjoyed this from start to finish, well narrated, believable characters and a nice little twist at the end
Ignore the bad reviews, this is a great listen. Good narrators and unique storyline with a human lifeline drawn through it. A short period which dragged when Carla is child but its all relevant. This book will leave you wired and perceptive to human lies, lives and intrigue.
"Gripping and complex thriller."
A well narrated story with good insights into human motivation an innermost thoughts of the characters. Plenty of twists and revelations.
Completely unexpected, emotional and addictive. Loved this listen. Gripping from the start and a fantastic study in human perspective.
