"Mr Mercedes My Kind of Story"

Believe it or not this was my first Stephen King book. I was totally enthralled. Narration was fantastic and the story had me on the edge of my chair and high anticipation for the next chapter. Can thoroughly recommend.

Slow to start, but then it's addictive. You must also read Finders Keepers. It's a semi sequel.

    "Highly Recommended!!"

Loved this book. An enthralling tale of cat and mouse, it's Stephen King's characterisation skills at their finest. Will Patton is one of my favourite audio book narrators, he has this amazing ability to bring the roles to life without sounding cheesy or fake, even when doing female voices. Highly Recommended listen!

    "Detective Thrills"

Mr Mercedes begins at a lovely... slow... relaxing... pace. Then a strange sentence catches you unaware and BAM suddenly you know you are reading a Stephen King novel and your feet hit the ground and they don't stop running. You get a concise look into the mind of a psycho killer as he is relentlessly pursued by a Det Ret (Retired Detective). This is not a book about paranormal activities, ghosts, nor is it a who-dun-it. We know who did it. We just want to know if he is going to get caught. Even if you are not a Stephen King fan, I think you will really enjoy listening to this wonderful tale. And I must not neglect Will Patton who also does a remarkable job.

Good story - nothing outstanding or particularly unique. But well written and well put together story. Typical high standard from Stephen King. Really enjoyed this after listening to a bit of rubbish lately trying to find something new and interesting.

    "A brilliant crime thriller"

Mr Mercedes is a departure from the Stephen King stories you might be used to. There are no supernatural elements at all here. But the story is every bit as suspenseful, as an old retired cop is pitted against an insane killer in a game of cat and mouse. The horror may be absent (although there some very disturbing scenes), but the style is unmistakeably King. And it's King at his best.

Will Patton's talent is on full display once again. He lends each character their own unique personality and his range is amazing. I left this book on my wishlist for too long, not really interested in a non-supernatural King story. Don't do the same. Buy it now. You won't regret it.

I have always been reluctant to read a Stephen King Novel believing regrettably thinking that all his stories were fearful and scary but I bit the bullet and my goodness I loved it. The story line was clever, intriguing, holding my interest all the way to the end. Undeniable a great thriller!

Stephen King can spin a yarn with the best. In fact, his books seem more alive and engaging and than many other authors.

I'm not a huge fan of his strictly horror writing, but if he can continue in this vein I'll read them all!

    "Pleasantly Surprised"

This was the first Stephen King that I had read in over 20 years. Initially I could not get enough of his books and consumed them non-stop from our local library, after a while I noticed his pattern and his writing became predictable - in my opinion. This book ... this book was from fresh mold!

This book was a great listen, it took a while to get used to raspy voice but eventually the narration became part of the story and I loved it. Well worth the listen.

    "A very good story indeed!"

I think that although this is not his usual type of book it is indeed worthy of Stephen King. I am not usually attracted to detective type novels, but this one held my attention from beginning to end. In fact I will actually have to add that over used comment "I could not stop listening" and stayed up several nights to very early mornings. Also the narrator was first class, at no time did I think otherwise and I am picky with that. He told the tale with interest and seeming enjoyment and I was sorry when I came to the last line. I highly recomend this book to not only King fans, but also to the people who usualy would not read his books,.As I said at the beginning it is not the usual thing you expect from him, but you will not be disapointed at all.

    ""Bloody" awesome"

Highly impressed with this latest work from Mr. King. The tale bounces between two main perspectives and the story itself is bleak and dark, but with the occasional rays of hope and warmth shining through. It varies in pace from a slow build up to an action packed climax, and leaves a big cliffhanger for the second follow up novel in the trilogy

The narrator Will Patton does a great job too, he is perfect for Hodges, and at one point I was reduced to tears during the recounting of the death of a young minor character, something I've never done before listening to an audio book.

Some parts are sexually and violently graphic, and very hard to listen to, but you should expect that if you know this author well.

    "Brilliant!"
What made the experience of listening to Mr Mercedes the most enjoyable?

Stephen King is a great writer and understands all the ways to keep you on the edge of your seat. Also, Will Paton is a great storyteller. This is win-win combination.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Absolutely. I think it's just the way the story was written and read. The pace is just right and it never lets up. My mind usually wanders when listening to books or I can't wait for the book to end so that I can listen to a new one, but this never happened while listening to Mr Mercedes and it's quite a long book.

Have you listened to any of Will Patton’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I'll definately look out for other books written by him.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

    The chase is on!

    Any additional comments?

    Credit well spent!

"Pretty Ordinary Book, Pretty Rubbish King Book"

Starts of well but soon drops off. There's no mystery, no tension and no real plot. The bad guy is one of King's weakest creations, as is the hero, and the story around them is equally as bland and unmemorable as they are.

One thing Mr Mercedes proves is that King really needs to either get someone who understands how the interwebs work or stop writing stories that feature it as a main plot point. The same goes for computers and car security systems for that matter.

It's all just so disappointing and mediocre. It's not bad so much as wholly unremarkable. There's nothing about it that makes the book feel like a King book.

Will Patton is a quality narrator though but when the best thing about an audiobook is the bloke reading it, something, somewhere, has gone very wrong.

What did you love best about Mr Mercedes?

Took a bit of getting in to, but then - BAM! Well paced, plenty of action, great characters. The thing is with Stephen King, you're never quite sure if he's going to kill off the lead characters at any moment, keeps you on the edge of your seat!

What other book might you compare Mr Mercedes to and why?

I don't think I've ever read anything like this before.

What about Will Patton’s performance did you like?

Fantastic. Loved listening to him and his lovely gravelly voice was perfect for the story.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to the job fair.

Yes, it's nicked part of almost every private-eye-hunts-serial-killer book ever written, from Wilkie Collins to Chandler and beyond. Yes, you could plot the beginning, middle and end without too many mistakes.

But that old formula in a great storyteller's hands can grip like nothing else, which is why we're still watching Sherlock and why JK Rowling's equally cliche-ridden latests are selling like hotcakes.

In other words, couldn't put it down (or whatever the audio equivalent may be). Highly recommended, have already downloaded the follow-up.

    "A gripping and absorbing thriller"

This Stephen King at his best - he is really much more than a horror writer, for those who don't already know that. It's his superb characterisation that is so special. His characters are fully realised, to the point that you feel you know them - even the evil ones. This is an "old fashioned" thriller, by which I don't mean dated or predictable, but simply a rattling good story which is scary, humorous, and moving - all human life is there as a disreputable newspaper used to say. It is hugely enjoyable and I found it difficult to pause once I had started. The narrator gives a beautifully judged performance and I would recommend this book to anyone - especially those who think Stephen King is not for them.

    "A below-par detective story"

I should start this review by explaining that I'm on a roll with Stephen King right now, having recently completed the excellent '11-22-63' followed by 'The Stand' (Brilliant) and then 'The Dome' (absolutely gripping). I therefore approached 'Mr Mercedes' with a deal of anticipation at enjoying the newest offering from one of the master story-tellers of our time.

I'm still not sure what happened, but this book was largely a bit of a let-down. The overall premise (a retired cop being stalked by a criminal he failed to catch) is sound enough, but as the story unfolds it's all a bit clumsy. Added to this there are two significant plot twists that you can see coming a mile away, and Mr King is known for being able to spring twists and turns on the reader out of the blue.

And that's the rub; the writing style just isn't King's. The dialogue doesn't snap the way it does in his other works, and the storyline is pedestrian at best.

On a plus note, Will Patton's narration was excellent, just the right amount of inflection so you could tell the characters apart without it decending into a radio play. Would like to hear more from him

I think I'll get one of his classics next, just to remind myself how exceptional a writer King is.

Great story from the outset, one of those you know within 10 minutes you are going to really enjoy. Characters are all great and you begin to quickly believe in each of them as genuine and believable people, even Mr Mercedes himself. There are no paranormal elements in this book at all, which Stephen King is obviously best known for. This was what drew to listen to the book, I was interested to see how that worked out and all I can say that it worked out very well indeed. I believe this may be part 1 of a planned trilogy and it would be great to go back to these superb characters for another story how ever this book has definite ending which does not leave you waiting for the story to complete in the next instalment.

    "Great build up, lackluster ending"

As with so many of King's 21st century works, he ratchets the suspense whilst introducing and fleshing out likable characters. Unlike many King novels, the locales are effectively anonymous, and there are precious few asides about the townsfolk and their secretly sordid lives, but the characters we follow are well rounded enough.

A few interesting twists pepper the narrative and keep the interest high until the last hour or so. By this time it feels as though the characters are simply running through motions rather than uncovering undiscovered revelations and it descends into a slightly predictable chase.

I am an avid King fan and have read and reread his entire back catalogue, short stories and poems included, but as with Duma Key, Under the Dome and 11.22.63 the drive runs out towards the end. It's a shame, but I remain a subscriber to the King story factory, eagerly awaiting the next It, Shining, or Different Seasons.
