Lilly Kaiser had come to terms with her solitary, uncomplicated life after becoming a young widow. So when a stranger delivers an old violin to her Berlin antiques shop and tells Lilly it belongs to her, she's completely bewildered. Why should she be the one to inherit such an exquisite instrument?
Together with her best friend, Ellen, and handsome musicologist Gabriel Thornton, Lilly sets out to explore the violin's legacy. From England to Italy to Indonesia, she follows its winding trail. Along the way, she learns of Rose Gallway, a beautiful woman of English and Sumatran descent who lived among Sumatra's lush gardens more than a hundred years earlier. A celebrated and sought-after musician, Rose once owned Lilly's violin and regularly played concerts for Sumatra's colonial elite - until, one day, she simply disappeared.
As Lilly unravels the mystery behind Rose's story - and uncovers other unexpected secrets - she'll come to see her own life in an entirely new light. And as each shared discovery brings her closer to Gabriel, her heart might finally break its long-held silence.

"Moonlit but not a listening pleasure.:/"
I liked the story but t narrative was so affected and annoying that I could only listen for short periods of time. Her gravelly tone and snooty accent spoiled the book for me. I will not read anything she narrates.
Much was lost in the German to English translation. The author also kept introducing side stories that you thought might play into the larger picture, but ultimately were just useless excursions that went nowhere and added nothing to the plot.
no, but I will not read this author again
I thought so
"The narrator ruined the book."
I started off reading this book on my kindle while on vacation. I didn't finish it on vacation, but really wanted to know what happened next. I then started listening to it on audible while driving to work. Huge mistake. Worst narration I've ever heard. The narration is all up talking/valley girl. So horrible. I'm going to take a long break and hopefully forget her voice so I can finish the book.
Horrible. Horrible. Horrible choice of narrator. It actually ruined the whole novel for me.
The story was pretty good, but the narration ... awful. The narrator, although skilled at employing different voices for each character, has a nasal intonation that ends most sentences. If the plot sounds promising, i would suggest reading it the old fashioned way, not as an audible pick.
"Narration ruined this for me,"
The storyline was good, but the narration sounded very snobbish. It ruined the book for me, I will never buy a book narrated by this person again. It was very annoying, . .If it had been narrated by someone else I would have given it 4 stars,
"Loved the story, Narr. voice annoying."
I spent too much time wondering why the narrator 's voice was so annoying. It was the way she ended each sentence with some kind of nasal up swing. Where have I head that reflection before? Oh yeah, that Jeopardy contest that was on Tweeter for the most annoying voice. Would love to hear this lovely story read by someone else.
loved ! have listened /read to such a wonderful story in a long time! worth the read!
Good story, kept me wondering what happened to each character. No scares or thrills, I typically listen to Stephan King or Joe Hill, etc., but I enjoyed this as a more toned down mystery story more about love.
loved this book wish it was longer. love all the different stories and how they connect. hooked from the first page.
"A cute book when you're in the mood for light read"
Everything was a little too convenient but it was still cute to read and enjoyable getting there.
"a nice wee story"
this is a nice wee story but not much more. it's more like a pleasant coach trip than a fair ground ride. more could have been made of Sumatra, more could have been made of the romance and the mystery could be seen unravelling from early on. it did have an interesting thread following the journey of the violin.
