Publisher's Summary

One single act of kindness becomes an endless reign of terror....

Tom Bryce did what any decent person would do. But within hours of picking up the CD that had been left behind on the train seat next to him, and attempting to return it to its owner, he is the sole witness to a vicious murder. Then his young family are threatened with their lives if he goes to the police. But supported by his wife, Kellie, he bravely makes a statement to the murder enquiry team headed by Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a man with demons of his own to contend with.

And from that moment the killing of the Bryce family becomes a mere formality - and a grisly attraction. Notice of Kellie and Tom's deaths has already been posted on the internet. You can log on and see them on a website. They are looking good dead.

Looking Good Dead is the second best-selling title in the Roy Grace series from number one author Peter James.

had to return. probably an interesting mystery but I couldn't take the constant F bombs. I purchased because I like this narrator but I wasn't familiar with the author.... lesson learned.

    "Enjoyable but questionable policing techniques"

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, populated with vile villains, winsome detectives, and innocent by-standers with interesting backstories. The narration was excellent. I withhold the final star because the police procedure seems to be somewhat unrealistic in several instances, including overlooking clear connection between events, failure to utilize armed response officers, and a senior police officer's distraction by clothes shopping amidst a major, horrific murder investigation. The protagonist's consultations with clairvoyants is also off-putting. I have a hard time believing that such an officer could attain the rank of detective superintendent.

    "My Retro Read!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely recommend this to everyone. I somehow missed this book in the series, and have just finished reading it after the latest book. I wasn't sure how that would work out, but I really enjoyed it, even though I know what happens to many of the characters later.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I really enjoyed David Thorpe's interpretation of Norman Potting. He nailed the character and the accent.

    Which scene was your favorite?

No scene was a particular favourite. I just got drawn into the entire book.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Just the terror of the entire situation. An innocent act of putting a CD in a computer to see what it was drew the character into a world of terror.

    Any additional comments?

I really enjoyed David Thorpe's narration. He did a brilliant job, and I would love to hear him narrate some of the upcoming books!

    "Hooray for Peter James"

This is the first unabridged audiobook I've listened to by James and I really enjoyed it. I'm an American and it was odd as I waited with baited breath for Grace to take out the bad guys with his firearm, but was instead dodging bullets himself! English police do not carry firearms! It's weird to me and strangely thrilling. How do they do it!!??

The book is very well written and researched. James has done his homework. The narrator was not the best, but did a fair job. A little more intonation and character separation would have helped.

The excerpt at the end, where James is being interviewed is fabulous and only adds to the series as a whole. I would definitely recommend this book and have already purchased the next in the series.

"As good as the first, but different."

Having just read the first Roy Grace book and thoroughly enjoyed it I dived straight into the second with some gusto and I think that this series will become a favourite of mine. One of the reasons that I say this is that while it has many of the hallmarks of the first book such as the characters and well described Sussex locations it has a different feel and does not simply follow the formula of the first.

This book differed in that it was less of a whodunnit as in the first book, rather more of a howdunnit and it began as a relatively slow burner with more time spent on enriching the characters. Speaking of which the excellent introduction of a thoroughly unpleasant non-PC old dinosaur of a police officer added an additional dimension to the chemistry that I personally liked. The way that the crime was eventually solved was also a small surprise in that the author didn't follow a predictable pattern that must have been tempting to him.

I found the narration of the book very similar to the first book (though see note below, it's not a universal opinion) and liked the narrator for the very same reasons. A bright, lively delivery that helped move the book along at a decent pace.

The only criticisms I would make is that when sounding peeved the narrator tended to fall out of character but this is a very minor thing. Also, I would have liked the bad guys perhaps to have a little more depth to their characters as this, on reflection, was a highlight of the first book.

The book ends with an interview with the author which I think gave an interesting insight into his thinking behind the books. Worth hanging on to listen to.

All thing considered this is shaping up to be a very enjoyable series!

Note: At the time of writing another reviewer seems to have had an entirely different experience from having listened to this audiobook. In particular the narration which she found incredibly monotonous. I would never say that my opinion counts more than that of another but having read that review I even re-listened to some parts of the book and I remain puzzled and have to simply disagree. I will check back with interest to discover what others feel about it.

"A book you can catnap listening to and have missed nothing !"

The narrator sounds like he's reading a kids story most of the time, he has very small repertoire of voices and at times even mixes them up! The storey is very slow and the author spends more time giving a geography lesson on Brighton and Hove and describing in detail everyones office! I am very disappointed. in this book. I have had several Peter James books and given good reviews, but maybe the poor narration highlighted the laborious writing.

"An introduction to a promising series..."

First a little note: Unfortunately, book 1 isn't available on Audible. However, don't let that stop you, you pick the history of the characters up quickly. I'm glad I took the risk.

    Now what I thought.

If you, like me, enjoy a decent series, Peter James's character Detective-Super Roy Grace and his second outing in "Looking Good Dead" seems to get this series off to a perfect start. His investigation into the disappearance of a legal assistance takes you on a fast paced ride through Brighton's less glamorous side.

Although being a great thriller, you could find yourself laughing out loud at certain points, much to the amusement of those around you, if you wear earphones.

You could even find yourself praying that no harm comes to some of the characters. Very few books have managed that for me.

I have read Mark Dawson and the "John Milton" book series and loved it. Stephen Leather and the "Jack Nightingale" book series is also one of my favourites.

I'm not sure if I should pass judgement on this one yet, but the first audible offering in the series seems to be right up there....

    Now on to book 3...

"Great story but not a great performance"

The story was gripping and well written but the performance let it down. To be fair the performance did improve as it went on. Initially somewhat jarring it settled down, partly as my ear attuned no doubt but I think the narrator also got more into the swing of it.

"Great Story- Not such great narration"

Well constructed storyline, developing into a very interesting series. There is for me however a lack of distinct changes in intonation, inflexion and accent to distinguish between some the characters.

A fairly gruesome storyline that didnt make always for easy litening with some strong language and gratuitous details at times meaning i needed to take care in terms of who else was listening. But it kept me gripped and wanting to know if there would be a happy ending .... or not!
