The new book from acclaimed writer Mark Dawson (author of the number one best-selling John Milton series), In Cold Blood is an action-packed thriller about ruthless betrayal and bloodthirsty vengeance.
Beatrix Rose was the most dangerous assassin in an off-the-books government kill squad until her former boss betrayed her. A decade later, she emerges from the Hong Kong underworld with payback on her mind. They gunned down her husband and kidnapped her daughter, and now the debt needs to be repaid. It's a blood feud she didn't start but is going to finish. Beatrix has already crossed one name off her Kill List. Her second target is a mercenary being held hostage by Somali terrorists. Can she infiltrate the most dangerous failed state on the planet and scrub him off the List, too?
Packed with explosive action and pause-resistant suspense, this is the must-listen first novel in a brand new series that is sure to be as successful as the John Milton series.

As always I finish a mark Dawson book waiting for the next....and to compound hit he gives you a teaser for book two!!....personally I think that books two and one could be combined...but I'm greedy ....now you may not like the plot or the premise of the book but u can't deny the fact that mark is a great story teller....his skill at telling the story is what makes these books worthwhile.....I thought that there was a great story to be told about Beatrix rose after meeting her in the John Milton series and I'm not disappointed bring it on mr Dawson!!
This is the first audible story that I've listened to and I chose a Mark Dawson story as I love his Kindle books. This audible.com book was equally as good. I listened as I did my morning walks and boy, did my walks go quickly as I didn't really notice that I was even walking as I was so enthralled with Beatrix Rose. I was just sorry when it finished. Now I'll be hoping for some more Beatrix Rose very soon. Fabulous story, awesome author. Full of excitement. Highly recommended.
"Visually impaired- listen to this excellent story"
In some ways, better.
Beatrix Rose- Dynamic and just doesn't quit
Neither. Got the adrenalin pumping
"Must read espionage series!"
I listened to all three of Mark Dawson's incredibly suspenseful Beatrix Rose novels almost a years ago. In Cold Blood is Book 1 but reading the entire series is a must. I have never read a more powerful espionage series. Each of the three audiobooks is available at Amazon to Kindle Unlimited members for $1.99 each. Or you will pay $3.99 for each Kindle book and $1.99 for each Audible audiobook. Either option is less expensive than buying at Audible.
In Cold Blood is not quite as powerful as Blood Moon Rising or Blood and Roses. There will be no more Beatrix Rose deries books (other than the earlier The Hong Kong Stories) because the protagonist has terminal cancer and dies at the end of Blood & Roses. I have previously reviewed Blood and Roses and The Hong Kong Stories.
"A great spin-off from Mark Dawson."
This is the first audiobook that I have had but I was very impressed with the ease of use and it was also a great story to start me off wanting more.
There was plenty of action throughout the story but the escape from the town after the attack was very well put.
again it's my first audiobook.
Revenge is best served HOT.
Overall a great experiance.
I have already recommending this book and the author, Mark Dawson, to friends. The story is richly textured and well written. The characters are well drawn and sympathetic, with a depth rarely found in thrillers. Mark Dawson draws portraits of his characters descriptively with crisp and clean writing.
When Beatrix brought the hostages out of the house when the Seals could not, and got the hostages on the boat to safety. It gave me the feeling that Beatrix could do whatever she wanted to do, and complete it successfully and well
I enjoyed the time Beatrix spent at the riad and the description of the house. It gave me the feeling of security for Bella and Beatrix, almost like wrapping them in safety.
When Beatrix talked of her motivation to go after the team who turned on her. She had no choice. The best defense is a good offense.
The whole Beatrix Rose series, as well as the John Milton series, is well worth the read. Complex characters with heart and guts. It doesn't get any better.
"Revenge with a Vengeance -The Payback Starts Here!"
A well written and well interpreted action packed thriller. If you like fast paced, explosive storytelling 'In Cold Blood' ticks all the boxes. A great listen from start to finish.
"Interesting writing style, face paced"
Fast paced but not spoon fed. Interesting and varied wording, leaves the reader to fill in some gaps instead of just making things too obvious.
This was my first revenge oriented book and its style is fairly unique. I've read a variety of series (Lee Child, Steve Berry, Harlan Coben, Robert Crais, Michael Connelly, Michael Harvey, Daniel Judson, Robert B. Parker, and Stuart Woods) and the most informative thing I can say is that is really isn't like any of them. It's shorter like Connelly's books, descriptively violent and cold-blooded like Jack Reacher series, but you're drawn to find out more about Beatrix by reading other, related books. I don't know if this is good or bad but kudos to Mr. Dawson for creating the interest.
Various voicing was unforced and pretty natural.
"Another hit for Dawson"
Sassy bitch revenge
It's a quick listen that you won't want to turn off
They picked the wrong woman.
Mark Dawson's style is easy yet exciting . He doesn't overthink his story lines, choosing instead to stick to the plot, the action and the character development. I'm hooked - they're quick reads and guilty action pleasures.
"Close your eyes, enter a different time & place!"
I deliberately listened to the Audible version before reading the book. I enjoyed it so much, as soon as I finished the Audible, I purchased the first 3 books in the series. I have not read the print version of book one yet. I expect pro's and con's for both methods and hopefully will be able to update this review later.
The twists and turns of the story caused Rose to react in ways that fit, yet not knowing what was happening next or how she would react definitely kept me awake and listening long after I should have been in bed.
Mark's ability to represent each of the characters gave them shape and texture that I might not have conceived in reading the book, broadening the story beyond my personal experience and knowledge.
Paybacks are a Mother!
I had not listened to an "audio book" since using them for business books, 15 years ago. Those business books were typically dry, boring lecture format.
In contrast, I was delighted by Mark Deakin's ability to draw me into the world and story that Mark Dawson created and shared with us.
"Enjoyed hearing the story brought to life"
having the characters brought to life through hearing it read.
Beatrix Rose. The detail of her having a deadline due to her illness. Pushes the story and the character along.
The ability to readily tell the difference between characters.
I don't know
Just books in this series
Some of the ship scenes
This story is a combination of Kill Bill and Captain Phillips. I enjoyed both of those movies, but just couldn't get into this book. It was boring to me, and the protagonist Beatrix Rose was someone I was not really rooting for. Instead of spending her final days, weeks or whatever due to cancer with her daughter she chooses to get revenge. On top of that she has to teach her daughter to become an assassin essentially because of her revenge plot. If it was Beatrix alone getting revenge with no one she cared about in the line of fire that would be ok, but she is willingly putting her child in danger. The whole killing of Beatrix's main target in this book was anti-climatic, I was expecting much more considering the build up. Overall, I will not be continuing this series unless it's a free deal.
"Well worth a read!"
Interesting, Exciting, Thinking
The scene where she slits the throat of the next on the list.
I was very pleasantly surprised by this book. I didn't think the subject matter was something I would enjoy. How wrong I was. The book is well written and pulls you into the story. The emotion and characters are believable and you just want to hear what happens next. I can't wait to get the next in the series just to see what happens. Will she make it? Will she finish her wish list?
"Fast pace gripping novel from Mark Dawson"
Great 'read' / listen. Starts well, gripping, engaging with great detail and suspense from start to finish. Fantastic character, driven by different motivations. Great spin off from the John Milton series. Well done Mark Dawson and more please.
"Beatrix book 1 review"
Great action and attention to detail throughout. A high octane seat of your pants action thriller. Ticks all the boxes. Believable protagonist with lots of backstory, helping to fuel subplot as Beatrix dispatches her brand of justice on those that have wronged her.
"Wild rose in a violent garden"
I listened to the audio edition in it's entirety before starting the print version so, yes.
Beatrix Rose's gift to her daughter
All of the descritive scenes of habitations - they are alive and vibrant., very visual.
Not moved, no, but the description of the hostage taking and holding by the pirates/terrorists was chilling.
After a very brief initial dismay at the reader's accent, and unlike some earlier reviewers, I found the narration matched perfectly with the fast paced story and the dialogue was skilfully done, each character being identifiable - not an easy task.
I very much enjoyed this book and look forward to Beatrix Rose's next assignment.
Exciting, Accurate, Fast.
Beatrix. She was strong yet vulnerable.
My first time
Agent B the revenge.
A thriller that you wanted to listen to until the end.
The plot is good and the descriptions of the places and experiences accurate as far as I can tell.
The characters are very realistic and you soon get to feel their situations.
The narration is clear and well read.
This is the first book that I have listened to from Mark Dawson which has me already looking forward to purchasing book 2 in this series and also looking back to his earlier novels.
I really recommend this audiobook.
"Cracking story rather let down by narration"
I haven't read the print version of this story, but having read other books by the same author which I have thoroughly enjoyed, I suspect that both would be equally enjoyable. The audio edition could be better than the print version with a better narration
The heroine Beatrix Rose is my favourite character, she is very well developed in the story, and the 'back story' to why she is on the vendetta is very well explained.I also like the light and dark of this character, she is a loving and caring mother (albeit with some rather strange ideas on what makes a good education!) but is also a ruthless and skilfull killer.
The narrator had a rather droning voice, and I found it difficult to concentrate on the story for more than about 45 mins. at a time, so anyone with a more involving voice and who could do a more convincing english accent would be preferable.
The story, particularly towards the end is very exciting, but the narrator's voice didn't really convey this, and didn't carry any particular emotion, which I believe detracted from the overall impression.
"A Cold Blooded Heroine"
Not seen the print version, so cannot compare. Although, as the narrators voice lacked character or interest, perhaps reading this might have been preferable?
It was a true thrill-ride. And this features a woman at its heart, without much of a heart. This was both am interesting twist, and at times, disturbing.
No, this is my first. His voice became a bland drawl by midpoint.
Not really, as Mr Deakins's voice grated on me so I needed regular breaks.
The story was good, if you like a cold hearted heroine who kicks butt without smudging her lipgloss and never much cares for the outcome. Certain scenes I found overly described, others were more fluid and fun, others dark and moody. The narrative unfolds well, and I'm reading something else by this author, and he is talented. Overall I'd recommend you give this a go if you enjoy thrillers.**I was lucky enough to received a free copy of this book for an honest review.**
"Betray your top assassin and expect trouble!"
Beatrix's story grabs you from the very start and you fully back every piece of violent retribution she dishes out
The action scenes, of which there are plenty and how the author builds the character of Beatrix. She's cold, ruthless, relentless yet vulnerable. You would definitely want her on your side
Not wanting to give anything away - too many to mention but the series is set up very well for the next instalment
Yes, it made for a very enjoyable long haul flight. The hours flew by
"Some people will enjoy it I guess"
If I had known the kind of book it was!
Gerald Seymour or similar
Not too bad. Ponderous at times, and a decidedly mixed British accent, but otherwise ok.
All the ones where the heroine kills numerous enemies with numerous weapons in numerous unlikely situations and remains almost entirely unscathed herself. And all without remorse or reflection.
I bought this book by accident but was determined to finish it. People who can suspend disbelief almost from beginning to end will probably thoroughly enjoy it, and I accept that it is a perfectly legitimate literary genre. But if you want real thrills from a real world look elsewhere. Like Gerald Seymour.
Liked the story but narrator isn't my favour. Some of the main character accents are a bit iffy.
