Teenager Jacob Hunt has Asperger's syndrome. A forensic science wizard, he shows up at crime scenes and gives law enforcement officials his advice. But when his tutor is found dead, he becomes a suspect. Suddenly, his Asperger’s traits - not looking people in the eye, tics and twitches - look more like guilt in the view of police. And Jacob's mother must ask herself the hardest question in the world: is her child capable of murder? (mulitple narrators)

"Lovely and a little frustrating"
I thoroughly enjoyed this book right up until the last two hours. What actually happened to Jess was all but spelled out for us in the first section of the story, so it felt like Picoult was trying to create a tension in the reader that wasn't there, by dragging out how long it took her characters to figure it out. Instead, I just felt frustrated by their lack of perspicacity - because they all seemed suddenly too dumb to ask the obvious question.
The book on the whole, however, was a joy to listen to.
The narrators were excellent, and I loved the switching viewpoints, as the story is told by Jacob, Emma, Oliver, Rich and Theo.
Jacob and Theo's perspectives are the best, as two teenagers who are frustrated and conflicted, but thoroughly good at heart, and while one has Aspergers and all the challenges that brings, the other suffers the fallout of a mother too busy for him. The tears I shed were always when one of these two characters was talking.
Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. It is thoroughly researched (as all Picoult's novels are), and aside from a little impatience and frustration towards the very end, I spent a very happy 20+ hours listening to this.
A bit long , could have been more compact and still had enough content to keep the reader interested. Well narrated audiobook .
I read this book years ago and it was great to hear it come to life. It's a fantastic story about family love and acceptance. As usual Ms Picoult has done her research into every little detail and the characters are believable. I would agree with another poster that the book was a bit too long but that doesn't mean it wasn't packed with twists along the way.
One minor frustration is that Audible has posted the narrator's as uncredited and I had to wait to the end until I could find out the names of the voice actors so I could look up to see what else they'd done. Some of the other books by these actors haven't been reviewed yet and I have two lined up (Joah and Jehnna - Andy Paris) in my wishlist. For your convenience here are the list of actors:
Nicole Poole - Emma
Andy Paris - Theo
Mark Turetsky - Jacob
Rich Orlo - Rich
Christopher Evan Welch - Oliver
One thing is that the book states Jacob speaks in a monotone but his own parts of the book are considerably more animated but that may have ben to stop the reader from turning off. A great read even it was a bit long!
As a person with Asperger's myself I found the insights into autism so accurate.
The character dynamics are the real grip to this story with well thought out story arcs and sub plots.
You can't fault Jodi Picoult research about the subject of her books and she certainly did a lot for this book. What I don't know now about Asperger's isn't worth knowing. As per previous reviewers comments the final outcome was a bit predictable. I did find it very frustrating when each time you thought Jacob would reveal what really happened he was either stopped mid sentence or he wasnt asked to explain his comment as he couldn't express himself very well but then that's a symptom of Asperger's. Nevertheless I enjoyed the book but it's not one of my favourite Picoult.
Yes, as a mother who has a 21 year old son with Dyspraxia and understand the difficulties they face due to lack of social awareness, it was interesting to listen to another example of the situation
knowing that parents have to understand we are not allown in this battle to make people understand, i would love to write a book to explain what happened to us so people can understand the situations autistic children can get into for no fault of there own
Yes i do we have experienced a situation that was out of our hands and we just had to wait till the wheel had stopped turning to make people see sense, this story made me very emotional in many ways thankyou for explaining how the condition affects the individual
"Follow House Rules - No Matter What!"
I really loved this story, it was great to listen to and very intriguing. I loved all the characters and I like the idea of crime scenes and how siblings are with a single mother. The story is certainly gripping, it keeps you engaged continuously and when it ends, you want to know more...not because you have been left hanging, but because of the following potential.
Jacob is my favourite character, he has Aspergers and I have worked and learned so much from people with Aspergers. Jacob is very clever and I love his sense of humour! It may be dry and he may not always get things, but he takes things so literally, it is like me! Jacob is obsessed with his crime show and routines and clearly loves his mother and brother.
All of it, the whole performance of the narrator was really good, very convincing and told from several points of view.
If you are a fan of Jodi, you will love this book - a great listen which I really enjoyed.
"Great book. Really irritating narration."
This book doesn't get off to a great start. it is as though the author has read a text book outlining the classic traits of asperger syndrome and has clumsily interwoven these into the first few chapters. The book gets much much better and actually is a really good read. The narration of the audio book is really annoying when the female narrator attempts to do different male voices. Really strained and unconvincing.
Love it. love Jodi Picoult, her stories are thought provoking and from the thoughts of the less obvious view.
Had to keep listening. Not great writing but crafted and compulsive and well performed by the cast.
