Number-one best-selling author Patricia Cornwell delivers the next enthralling thriller in her high-stakes series starring Kay Scarpetta - a complex tale involving a serial sniper who strikes chillingly close to the forensic sleuth herself.
It's Chief Medical Examiner Dr Kay Scarpetta's birthday, and while she's enjoying a leisurely morning, a man is shot dead five minutes from her house. The bullet tore through him as he unloaded groceries from his car. Yet nobody heard or saw a thing.
It looks like the work of a serial sniper - one who leaves no trace except for tiny copper fragments, and whose seemingly impossible shots cause instant death. As Scarpetta investigates, uncovering details that only she can analyze, she begins to suspect that the killer is sending her a message.
Adding to Scarpetta's growing unease is the sense that those closest to her are keeping secrets. And when her pursuit of the sniper takes Scarpetta to a shipwreck off the Florida coast, she comes face to face with shocking evidence that implicates her niece Lucy - Scarpetta's very own flesh and blood…

"Hit and then it hit the floor"
I am a Scarpetta fan and found this audio book a good listen. Great narration, with authentic accents and distinguishable character voices, which are always a pleasure. I found the storyline very credible and interesting.
The only flaw for me was a eager sudden and flat ending. I realize the intended purpose of it, bout found it to be a rather bland ending to an otherwise rise momentum-building story.
"poor ending and too much technical details"
poor ending and too much technical details for a story with lots of potential feels like the author decided to cut the story early for a part two.
I used to love the Kay Scarpetta books, but was very disappointed with this story. I kept waiting for the story to get going and then it just ended. Won't be listening to another.
"As usual a thought provoking yarn"
I enjoy the portrayal of the characters and how the story unfolds
kay is a well written character with strengths and weaknesses
I have listened to quite a few now and this one is as interesting as the others
lack lustre storyline.. poor ending. struggled to end - almost gave up. Good for insomnia though...
This is the first Patricia Cornwall book I have listened to, having read a few. I found the narration a bit stilted at first but it seemed to improve as the book progressed. The storyline was ok but I was disappointed with the ending. Not my favourite Kay Scarpetta book!!
"Another great story."
Loved this book! Really enjoyed the story and the conclusion was very satisfying. Another winner.
Interplay between main characters was interesting and thought through ,but actual plot and purpose of the story were just not apparent . I really began to feel that I was wading through treacle waiting for something interesting to happen . I persevered till chapter twenty six then just gave up . Even reading the final chapters , in case I had missed a riveting story , it still could not hold my interest . Perhaps I missed something , but I really don't think so !
"Implausible and not well thought out"
My first Cornwell novel.
Very disappointed. Unrealistic characters- millionaires who work as FBI agents?! Far too long - one event at the beginning followed by 40 chapters of not a lot + a rushed ending. Full of cliches and simplistic characters.
It's a real shame as I was expecting more.
"Not her best"
Not her best story line and the narrator voice does get a bit drone. I love these stories generally a d I have read most of them
"Good story, bad narration"
Compelling story if rather implausible towards the end. Main problem is narration - distractingly irritating
