Publisher's Summary

A lump of concrete dropped deliberately from a little stone bridge kills the wrong person. The young woman in the car behind is spared. But only for a while... A few weeks later, George Marshalson lives every father's worst nightmare: he discovers the murdered body of his eighteen-year-old daughter on the side of the road. Wexford steps into the case but soon a second teenage girl is murdered - a victim unquestionably linked to the first - and another family is shattered...

Twists and turns!

A dramatic story with lots of twists and turns. I didn’t expect the ending to be what it was, which is great. The narration was challenging at times but that didn’t dampen my eagerness to keep listening.

Crime without the gore

I enjoyed this. It’s an old style detective/crime story where the perp isn’t immediately obvious and the focus is not so much on the crime, but whodunnit. Narrator is good at using different accents for different characters, so you can keep up when there’s long conversations.

I was not disappointed by this book

I was not sure what to expect from this book.

Keen life observations

Non cliche, detailed observations of people’s idiosyncrasies, that cloud rather than define the story trajectory, in a realistic ways

Bored to tears..

The story line was not strong. I enjoyed the narrator however, it all dragged on for too long in my opinion.

Traditional and long-winded English murder mystery

By-the-numbers murder mystery that is obsessed with class, marriage and children. It clings to middle-class values and tut-tuts disapprovingly at a changing world of equality and progress. A dull story that overstays its welcome.
