Welcome to Desperation.
Once a thriving copper-mining town in the middle of the Nevada desert, Desperation is now eerily abandoned. It's the last place that travellers like the Carver family, bound for vacation, and writer Johnny Marinville, astride his Harley, would expect to be stopped and charged. But Desperation still has a local cop - a unique regulator who patrols the wilderness highway.
The secrets buried in Desperation are as terrifying as the forces summoned to encounter them. A terrifying transformation is taking place, and the travellers will soon discover the true meaning of desperation....
©1996 Stephen King (P)2016 Simon & Schuster Audio
in the tradition of The Stand and The Shining. The story grabs in the first Chapter and hangs on right through the ride to the very end . Kings characters are painted in there by a master artist and once again featured a young boy. He does children so well like The Body (Stand by me), The Tower series and The Shining. Loved every minute of this audio book, and was impressed by Mr kings reading of his own story. not just a great writer, but also a great campfire story - teller. I recommend you listen to the audio book for the complete Stephen King experience.
I really enjoyed the story in this book but really wished it was performed by someone other than King. So many hours of his nasal, non expressive tone would have been exhausting were in not for the great story. With all of the highly talented audiobook readers available I have no idea why he would have read it himself
Steven king doing what he does best, Americana and horror. I can feel a sequel coming on!
"Fantastic stephen king"
Great story typical stephen king his narration took a little getting used to but didnt spoil the story for me
"Loved it ."
what a treat it is to have Stephen KIng read this. I personally love Stephen king and enjoyed looking for his small parts in his movies, and although some people think his acting let's him down and want some first class reader to narrate his books , it adds something to have Stephen KIng read his book , it's like having a signed copy , it's like Marmite to Stephen king fans you will love it or hate it . my advice listen to the free sample if it's not a voice you could get on with don't get it . it would be a shame to tarnish this story just because you don't like the narrators voice ...
"1st S KING book that I've read AND listened to!"
I read Desperation a few years ago and accidently downloaded the Audible version and I'm hooked. I plan to download lots of other Stephen King Audible books as the reader deffinately captured the feel of the book and it was great reliving the terror caused by Tak!
I actually might have shed a tear for Johnny at the end of this. Stephen King you are brilliant.
"Classic Stephen King"
I used to read a lot of Stephen King when I was younger and this takes me right back. Great as an audio book because reading normally I struggle with the level of detail in his books. Best part is that as it is narrated by the author you get the story told exactly as he intended it to be told.
"Stephen King should stick to writing"
I was really looking forward to this book after reading the description but unfortunately Stephen King narrating just does not work. His monotone voice doesn't change for any of the characters and I had to speed his voice up. Something I've never done before. Not a bad story but too much religious content for my liking.
"Stephen King at his best"
This is my favourite type of King story. Supernatural elements forming the basis for an evolving mystery but also a character drama where relationships shift and change under pressure!
"Just a gentle road trip!!?"
What a fantastic tale. The interwoven spiritual theme intertwined with the violence that unfolds is absolutely brilliant. It makes you shudder but unable to resist the next passage.
I have read every King book but I might not after this! This from the man who gave us Shawshank, Misery, Green Mile and Mr Mercedes?! Wow, lazy day at the office clearly. It's a very poor read. He chose to narrate his own book with a nasal drawl that bored me, again compare to the brilliant Mr Mercedes narrator.. No comparison. Just poor. Boring. Disappointing.. And I'm a fan! Take a holiday Stephen King.
