Publisher's Summary

Welcome to Desperation.

Once a thriving copper-mining town in the middle of the Nevada desert, Desperation is now eerily abandoned. It's the last place that travellers like the Carver family, bound for vacation, and writer Johnny Marinville, astride his Harley, would expect to be stopped and charged. But Desperation still has a local cop - a unique regulator who patrols the wilderness highway.

The secrets buried in Desperation are as terrifying as the forces summoned to encounter them. A terrifying transformation is taking place, and the travellers will soon discover the true meaning of desperation....

    "classic Stephen King."

in the tradition of The Stand and The Shining. The story grabs in the first Chapter and hangs on right through the ride to the very end . Kings characters are painted in there by a master artist and once again featured a young boy. He does children so well like The Body (Stand by me), The Tower series and The Shining. Loved every minute of this audio book, and was impressed by Mr kings reading of his own story. not just a great writer, but also a great campfire story - teller. I recommend you listen to the audio book for the complete Stephen King experience.

"Enjoyed but wished it was read by another talent"

I really enjoyed the story in this book but really wished it was performed by someone other than King. So many hours of his nasal, non expressive tone would have been exhausting were in not for the great story. With all of the highly talented audiobook readers available I have no idea why he would have read it himself

"Great read by the horror and supernatural master! "

Great Stephen King novel. Sometimes predictable but enough suspense and twists to keep you listening. I've been a King fan since I picked up my first, and this did not disappoint. Really enjoyed listening to it narrated by the author himself as it seems to add another aspect to the book. You really get the impression that the author has enjoyed reading his work as much as writing it.

    "Enjoyable Stephen King Romp"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this book as the story has a good pace and well developed characters and is helped by the fact that King narrates himself.

What did you like best about this story?

The characters were nicely developed as the story unfolded.

Have you listened to any of Stephen King’s other performances? How does this one compare?

This was a good performance by King and underlines why many books would benefit from author narration.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I wasn't moved but had a big smile on my face when the 12 year old David Carver feeds his comrades with fish and crackers in a nod to the feeding of the 5,000, Matthew 14: 13-21.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book so much I will listen to more Stephen King.

    "God is cruel."

This was the second time I tried to read this book, the first time I found it to violent and relentless in its gore and suffering; it still is but compared to the news we read every day it has lost some of the horror and that is a very sad reflection on our times.
The plot is a kind of revelation come commentary on environmental issues and racist abuse, but do not worry it just plows all that under a ton of bodies and blood , the characters are well drawn and the evil ones are also well described and put to some horrific use, this is the period where King was talking a lot about alcoholism and probably confronting his mortality, lots of references to middle age aches and pains, also his confusing religious expositions, still a very Christian mix of ideas ( unlike in his last books where god is closer to a god from the Necronomicon).
I can not describe it as fun but it certainly kept me interested and worried for the people in the story.

    "Stephen King at his best"

This is my favourite type of King story. Supernatural elements forming the basis for an evolving mystery but also a character drama where relationships shift and change under pressure!

What a fantastic tale. The interwoven spiritual theme intertwined with the violence that unfolds is absolutely brilliant. It makes you shudder but unable to resist the next passage.

    "Back to his best (almost)"

I enjoyed early Stephen King, It and The Stand being my favourites, but fell out of love following The Dark Tower.
This is a return to his better years. The characters are well painted. As usual, there is plenty of Americana trivia especially relating to teenage years to provide depth and nostalgia of my own youth. None of this detracts from the pace and tension. Having Stephen King read the novel added to the overall product.
It would be a 5, but for occasional feelings of reusing the formula from It.
