Publisher's Summary

Nothing ever happens in August, and tenacious sleuth Kate Shackleton deserves a break. Heading off for a long-overdue holiday to Whitby, she visits her school friend Alma, who works as a fortune-teller there.

Kate had been looking forward to a relaxing seaside sojourn but upon arrival discovers that Alma's daughter, Felicity, has disappeared, leaving her mother a note and the pawn ticket for their only asset: a watch-guard. What makes this more intriguing is the jeweller who advanced Felicity the 30 shillings is Jack Phillips, Alma's current gentleman friend.

Kate can't help but become involved and goes to the jeweller's shop to get some answers. When she makes a horrifying discovery in the back room, it soon becomes clear that her services are needed.

Met by a wall of silence by town officials, keen to maintain Whitby's idyllic façade, it's up to Kate - ably assisted by Jim Sykes and Mrs Sugden - to discover the truth behind Felicity's disappearance. And they say nothing happens in August....

Disappointing

Do you have any additional comments?

I have been a fan of Frances Brody's Kate Shackleton since Book 1, so it was disappointing that this book strayed so far from those promising beginnings. The character Kate has become humourless and snobbish, and I couldn't understand why she would continually and blatantly lie to the police investigating a murder. She's supposed to be a private investigator, interested in uncovering the truth, but she obstructed their enquiries for no reason. I got half-way through the book but became so annoyed by Kate's attitude that I stopped listening. The previous book showed signs of straying from Kate's original character, humanity and humour, but this one went too far away for me. Such a shame.

Just the perfect pace and narrative for relaxing,

Always enjoy a Kate Shackleton story. The right mix of characters and mystery, though Kate does put herself at risk a bit too often, and I’d prefer she spent more time at the Royal in this episode.

Not the best in the series.

Not my favourite in the series. However, it became much more enjoyable when Sykes and Mrs Sudgon became involved. Will still continue with the series.
