Bill Nighy stars as Charles Paris in a BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of Simon Brett's novel.
Charles Paris is understudying in a West End production whose star, Michael Banks, seems unable to master the script.
Has Charles time to solve a murder, win Frances' heart and make it onstage by the time the curtain goes up?

"Bill Nighy Is Perfection"
For understated performance, you have a hard time finding better than Bill Nighy. He gives a life to Charles Paris that Simon Brett should be proud of.
Any Charles Paris BBC performances are Best Buys.
When Charles is resisting the advances of his ex-wife.
It is not the destination, but the journey to be enjoyed.
This series is great comedy, with clever writing and humorous insights into British acting circles.
can listen to this daily -- so well written and acted. great choice of voices for each character.
"Charles Paris never disappoints"
British dramedy at its best. Bill Nighy is funny in spades A must listen....
"This is when Juliette first meets Miles"
I love this BBC Radio drama series. This one was released in 2015, but is an earlier mystery. Juliette first meets Miles here. Of the 9 BBC Charles Paris mysteries starring Bill Nighy on audible this is my least favorite. That being said it is still Bill Nighy as Charles Paris so I must give it many stars.
Simon Brett's Charles Paris stories are always sheer delight, especially when performed for the BBC with Bill Night his lugubrious, worldly self. Funny, quirky and seeped in behind the scenes acting and family rivalries, they are a joy not to be missed. This one is no exception.
Worth every penny/ credit.
"Another Charles Paris triumph!"
Jeremy Front is a genius at updating Simon Brett's Charles Paris for a modern radio audience; Bill Nighy is superb at extracting the maximum louche appeal from the title character, and Susanne Burden is a perfect foil for his accidental adventures. I hope the BBC commission more adaptations - and when they do, that Audible publishes them!
"More Charles Paris"
loved it, another grest Charles Paris Mystery, i have all the other Chsrles Paris audio books and look forwsrd to more of the same please
"Brilliant as expected"
Bill Nye is always guaranteed to deliver an impeccable performance. The script provides moments of comic genius as expected from the Charles Paris series.Excellent supporting cast including Lesley Philips.
If you like black comedy and a good murder mystery this is for you. Going to listen to another Charles Paris mystery to cheer up a very grey Sept.Friday. Hopefully there will be more produced in future.
"Gentle murder with irony"
Bill Nighy can deliver the best deadpan humour south of the Tweed! Charles Paris, played by Nighy, is probably the most charming, unreliable, endearing and infuriating recidivist alcoholic detective in fiction. He does have insight, but it dissolves, with conscience and penitence, with his first sniff of booze. Still, he's seemingly less narcissistic and smarter than most of his colleagues, and his semi-ex-wife Frances veers between affection, fury, irritation and maternal concern for him. He is capable of wise social comment and appraisal of other people.
Of course, by now, he should have succumbed to some horrid alcohol-related illness, but it's fun to listen in to his critique of theatre folk, art, pretentious money men, etc.
"Great if a Golden Bunch"
I'm a fan of Charles Paris in multiple formats but what Mr Nighy brings to the role can't be over estimated, he's just brilliant and he brings the whole piece to life. This is the best of the whole collection when it comes to story but the entire Paris canon is a pleasure to indulge in.
"Great as Ever"
As with all these plays, funny clever and well acted, a joy. Best to hear in sequence but not essential.
"Another great Charles Paris adventure"
Loved it - funny, well acted, great story, everything you'd expect from a Charles Paris mystery - acting, family strife and murder with more than a hint of comedy. A great listen.
