Publisher's Summary

For James Bond and the British Secret Service, the stakes couldn’t be higher. 007’s mission is to neutralise the Russian operative Le Chiffre by ruining him at the baccarat table, forcing his Soviet masters to ‘retire’ him. When Le Chiffre hits a losing streak, Bond discovers his luck is in – that is, until he meets Vesper Lynd, a glamorous agent who might yet prove to be his downfall.

Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Dan Stevens.

Ian Fleming was born in London in 1908. He was educated at Eton and worked as a journalist in Moscow and a banker and stockbroker in London before becoming personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence during the Second World War. Dan Stevens is internationally known for his role as Matthew Crawley in the hit television drama Downton Abbey, and more recently he has starred in films including Summer In February, The Fifth Estate, A Walk Among the Tombstones, The Guest, The Cobbler and Night At The Museum 3. Critic Reviews

"Ian Fleming writes with a kind of pushing, bloodcurdling elegance. His thrillers are models of fastidious murder." ( New York Times)
"From the first evocative words to the last savagely ironic sentence, this is a novel with its own flavour." ( Sunday Times)
"Hums with tension." ( Time Magazine)
"A superb gambling scene, a torture scene which still haunts me, and, of course, a beautiful girl." (Raymond Chandler)
"A first-rate thriller…with a breathtaking plot." ( Manchester Guardian)

Better than the movie

Nothing like the movie, would actually recommend this to anyone who is not even into spies, but enjoys a good story and character study.

A brilliant introduction to the character of James Bond, perfectly narrated by Dan Stevens.

apparently, "a review requires 15 words"

should be okay now.

Bond… the real James Bond

Growing up with the James Bond movies it is wonderful to read the original book that this character derives from. A much more complicated character than he is often given credit for. A great story and a challenge at times not to put your favourite Bond to the story line as it unfolds… Connery, Craig, Brosnan…

Surprisingly good for such a old book!

Having never read (listened) to a bond or even a spy book, this was genuinely very good!

Classic spy story split into 3 distinct acts

This is a clear classic and very enjoyable particularly if you enjoy the Bond franchise. The voice performance was also good, though not as good as the prequel Forever and a Day. The only sour thing is the last 6 minutes where they interview the voice actor about the story, almost like a review which is very odd. The voice actor would have as much insight to the way the story was written as the audience so it was like hearing a review within the work itself and now I'm providing meta commentary review of a review. I would much more appreciate if the voice actor read a foreword or an interview of Ian Fleming which would have provided much more valuable insight and substance.

Dan Stevens brings James to life

Reading James Bond has been on my list for years. I've sat down before to try (in my younger years) and I found it hard to get into. I thought I'd give it another go in audiobook format and I am so glad I did. Dan's version of Bond was delightful but what really amazed me was the supporting characters. His French and American characters particularly stole the show, when Felix came on the scene I honestly thought another actor had come in! I inhaled this audiobook and can't wait to listen to more, and see each narrator's spin on the stories. Having struggled to read it in the past I instead this time around fell in love with Fleming's prose, which has an abrupt beauty to it. James Bond is not as action hero compared to the movies and it actually made him more endearing. I did laugh aloud when hearing about his choice in pyjamas. I really enjoyed the Cold War elements which gave more authenticity to this story than the film version.

Simply the Best

The first in the series and a brilliant ride. Setting up the intrigue of a high stake Casino adventure, to a torturous capture ending with the vulnerability of Bond. Brilliant.

Very enjoyable.

The reader was very clear, he also made it interesting different voices. Ian Fleming has written a very good series and this is excellent for the first one.
