Dark haunting book. That has you on the edge of your seat. Great narrator, she really does the different characters well. Couldn't stop listening till it ended.
Creepy as heck. Reminded me of classic horror movies set in creepy country settings where, for sure, there would be 'something nasty in the woodshed'. However, twists and turns abound and lead to a satisfying ending, but hungry for more. Great prequel to the Detective Lacey Flint series. The Narrator is great! Having lived in England most of my life, I'm impressed with her ability to narrate all the different accents and flip from one to the other with ease.
"Great plot, not so well read"
I really enjoyed this story, but the reader really got on my nerves. There are a few male characters in this story who play important parts, and the lovely, bright female voice makes them sound silly, especially since the reader really tries to make her voice sound dim. It would have been easier to ignore if she'd just used her normal voice. Better yet, the story should have been read by a male, as female characters generally suffer less by being read by a male than the other way around.
But reading aside, great story, Bolton at her best.
I've read one book by this Author and i enjoyed it and this book didn't disappoint. Very gripping and I just was gripped from start to finish. It was all so believable and will read even more books by this Author.
Can't rate this highly enough. The narrator really brings the full cast of characters to life. I thought the performance was amazing especially considering that you have some scenes with dialogue between multiple characters with different accents. The Awakening and Sacrifice are excellent too.
From the start to the finish I found this story compelling and easy to follow. All the stories from this author are brilliantly written.
I didn't know where the story was going to lead and how it was going to end, I was on the edge of my seat throughout. I couldn't stop listening.
The plot was well thought out and the characters were voiced perfectly. At some points I had goosebumps.
A must read for anyone who dares!!!
"The story is good, the narrator is brilliant."
The story is good, the narrator is brilliant. I like her voice. I think that she brought the story alive.
This was a great book. Halfway through you think it's about to finish, and then there's a whole extra part to it. My husband listened to this when running in the dark, and got a bit scared!
1st Audio book. Amazed how one narrator can make a book so interesting. Book kept you on the edge of your seat and made you try to solve the mystery for yourself. Wonderful story with many twist and turns. No disappointment here at all.
I have listened to 2 of her/his books, which were great, and so bought this one. The narrator has a terrible whiny voice, especially when doing the children's voices - I persevered and persevered, hoping it would get better, but the story was corny and excutiating - despite the 2 good books before, this one was so bad (and though I tried, I could not manage to finish it - as soon as my new credits became available, I bought something new, and cannot bare to go back to it) I will never purchase another book by this author or, most particularly, this narrator! I gave one star, purely so it registers as a choice! AWFUL!
her voice was whingy and whining, too english, and the childrens' voices in particular, made my hackles rise when listening!!
No, sorry - I endured it til halfway through the second part, and now, after getting a new book, which was great, I could not bear to go back to it!! I will never finish it.
