"Off the wall Buddhist thriller"
This book introduces Detective Sonchai Jitpleecheep and the extraordinary milieu in which he operates. I had previously read Bangkok Haunts which is one of the sequels, so I knew what to expect. The book is at once sleazy, refreshing, intrigueing and edgy, and is a major departure from the conventional cop thriller. It is definitely a good listen, and the narration by Glen McCready is first class. It would have garnered 4 stars, but lost a star when the author lapsed into explanation mode for much of its second half.
Having visited Bangkok a few times I enjoyed the journey which this book took me on. I have re-listened to and I am sure I will play it again, I keep finding more depth to the story each time. If you have any interest in the going ons of a Thai cop in Sukhumvit road Bangkok then I am sure you will enjoy this, I found myself stopping along the side of the road to listen to more of the story before I need to leave my car to visit a client. Well done
As much philosophy and anthropology as thriller, but better because of it. An engrossing listen which has made my forthcoming holiday to Thailand even more eagerly anticipated. I cannot say it is accurate (Although I have read reviews which suggest it is) but it certainly plays well, it leaves a satisfying feeling of having learned about a culture as well as having heard a decent thriller. But don't get the impression that it is boring it certainly is not.
You MUST get this audio book (or indeed the book) it is the best I have read/listend to in Ages, fresh and original.
In fact I recommend all books of this series, and cannot wait for the next one.
Struggled to finish. author kept wondering away from the story line and I got bored.
