Audible Editor Reviews

A ghost story told from the perspective of a ghost - one who’s a private investigator residing on the New Jersey shore - lends itself easily to comedy. This light and spooky mystery plays with the detective genre in a style that young adult listeners will relish. A Wild Ghost Chase is part of a series about ghost P.I. Paul Harrison and his spectral friend Maxie; the house they share with its mother and daughter owners and the ways they accommodate each other and solve mysteries together. It is the first in the series to be told from the P.I.’s perspective and James Patrick Cronin performs him as a fairly straightforward gumshoe bringing comedic elements in when he and Maxie, who’s somewhat of a troublemaker, interact with the living.

Publisher's Summary

Phantom PI Paul Harrison from the national best-selling Haunted Guesthouse mysteries returns with a tale of his own in a house full of ghosts, secrets, and spectacular oceanside views.…

Three years ago in a large Victorian house on the Jersey Shore in the town of Harbor Haven, fledgling private investigator Paul and his client, Maxie Malone, were murdered. Since then, recent divorcée and reluctant ghost whisperer Alison Kerby and her 10-year-old daughter, Melissa, have moved in and converted the place to a guesthouse, where Maxie and Paul are now checked in for an eternity and ready to solve any case that comes their way - or at least spook the guests (who love it). Alison’s got a lot on her plate at the moment, however, so when Paul discovers the 300-year-old ghost of a small boy in the house, he decides not to involve her in the case. The boy, named Eagle of the Sun, says he’s searching for his missing mother. Paul’s happy to help Eagle of the Sun find her, though something about the boy’s story doesn’t add up. But why would a lost little ghost lie?

Includes a preview of the next Haunted Guesthouse Mystery, Chance of a Ghost, available February 2013.

    "Good story, weak performance."
What made the experience of listening to A Wild Ghost Chase the most enjoyable?

It is another good E.J. Copperman story. Great for a short trip, and for a slight change of pace.

What other book might you compare A Wild Ghost Chase to and why?

The other four Haunted Guesthouse Mystery books (I got out of order on my listening). I am very much enjoying the story line and the characters, but mostly because I don't have to turn off the sound or yell "migraine" when children are around, great work E.J. Copperman, whoever you are.

What didn’t you like about James Patrick Cronin’s performance?

As he was portraying Paul, a tall (6 foot plus) +- 225 lbs Private Eye, he shouldn't sound like he is 5'5" and around 145 lbs. He totally missed the mark with Alison, way to curt in her mannerisms, no matter how busy the story had her. Maxie was almost unrecognizable. But the worst of all was the grandmother (Loretta?). The actor made her sound like she was over 90, shuffling around with a walker, this book was not written in or about the late 60's when people were old at 65. Stereo typing isn't cool.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A lot of things may change when you leave this life, but somethings don't.

    Any additional comments?

If the powers to be decide to make another audible book with Paul as the narrator, please find an actor that will be true to the story line and not make it a stand alone piece.

The narrator sounded like he was reading-not like he was telling a story. (Very choppy speech. Hard to listen.)

"The choice of narator does nothing to aid this . ."

The choice of narrator does nothing to aid this book, after the first two books being read by the wonderful Amanda Ronconi they change narrators in this book.

I understand the book is mainly from Paul's point of view, however the other main characters are still present and unfortunately this narrator's style & treatment not only presents them differently but the voices are a total disconnect from the previous books.

Aside from the fact that I believe Amanda Ronconi has captured the characters and presented this series in the tone the Author meant it to be conveyed better than this narrator and his style, this book really gives the reader very little extra insight into the lead or any other characters. Its only redeeming factor in my opinion is the twist at the end

It's not a bad book as such and if the narration is ignored could be of interest to lovers of this author or series

I would say give it a miss for now and read it later but I don't know if the events portrayed end up being referred to in future novels, and even if they did I think it world only be in a minor way.

Thankfully Amanda Ronconi make a welcome return in the next book .

    "Unexpected Ending"

You don't have to listen to this one to get the series. The narrator's timing is off, and it is told from the perspective of the male ghost. I suspect this one would have been better just read. You don't learn enough about him to make it worthwhile, but the ending was interesting. I never really do figure out the end of her books.

    "Meh. Also: DearMr. Cronin,.."

Why is it that many narrators think all grandmothers are necessarily 90+ years old and Parkinson's sufferers?? Loretta, the grand in this story, is an active, healthy, witty and intelligent woman who is mother to Alison. Since Alison's daughter/ Loretta's granddaughter Melissa is a mere 10, Loretta could conceivably be as young as 50! No need whatsoever for the quavery ancient Mariner vocals Cronin ascribes to her. Rookie mistake from a narrator with enough experience to know better

    "Cute story bad character voices"

I didn't realize when I bought it but its not the regular narrator, which may have been ok since this is a story from pauls perspective but the voices aren't great. Loretta sounds like a 102 year old smoker. Luckily its short.

The story was a good one but the narrator ruined it the only reason I was able to finish it was because I knew it was a short story and that the underlying story would be good.

I have enjoyed others in this series. I Can't figure out why this was so trite and youngish? Just felt like "get it over with". I was not entranced by the reader either. He sounded like he was reading to young children also.?!

"Enjoyable bonus story from a brilliant series"

I am a fan of the E. J. Copperman series and this short story has the same light tone, uncomplicated humour and charm of the ordinary as the novels I have read so far. Told from the point of view of a different character than usual.

told by paul one of the ghosts haunting Allison's guest house.
there wasn't a murder this time but an investigation
trying to find a dead boy's mother.
so far this is the only book performed by a man, james partrick Cronin and I thought he did a good job of doing it.

    "Escape your worries"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This series of books is clean, clear escapism from the terrible world we live in. Yes there are deaths and murders but each one gives you an enjoyable story about how the investigation gets sorted. The author is using a different name and when you find their reality it will blow your mind. How have they got enough time to do everything in their lives? Must be bi-polar like me!

Who was your favorite character and why?

The previous owner of the house. Cant say to much otherwise it gives to much away. The character is very amusing and I wish they were with me!

What about James Patrick Cronin’s performance did you like?

Voices in audible books are very important as they can make or break them. When you read a story you imagine their voices and when it is read to you you hope it does not jar. This series of books are just spot on. Thank you.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me happy and relaxed.

    Any additional comments?

I am going to recommend this series to many.

    "Let down by reader"
Is there anything you would change about this book?

The reader could at least have listened to some of the other books: he mispronounced many things, the pronunciation of which has been classified previously. He also mispronounces standard words calling 'decimated', 'disseminated'!!

Would you be willing to try another one of James Patrick Cronin’s performances?

    No.

If this book were a film would you go see it?

    Ye-es

    Any additional comments?

Good story, excellent series, bad reader.
