Penguin Classics presents Jane Austen's Persuasion, adapted for listening and available as a digital audiobook as part of the Penguin English Library series. This abridged version is read by the actress Geraldine McEwan.
"Her attachment and regrets had, for a long time, clouded every enjoyment of youth; and an early loss of bloom and spirits had been their lasting effect"
Persuasion, Jane Austen's last novel, is a moving, masterly, and elegiac love story tinged with the heartache of missed opportunities.
It tells the story of Anne Elliot who, persuaded to break off her engagement to the man she loved because he was not successful enough, has never forgotten him. When he returns, he brings with him a tantalising second chance of happiness...
Part of a collection of vintage recordings taken from the Penguin Archives, the Penguin English Library series offers affordable, collectable, quality productions that are perfect for on-the-go listening.

"Persuasion is not Austen at her best"
I doubt it.
The story felt a bit rushed. Austen did not delve as deeply into her characters as when she is at her best. The story was a bit too predictable.
I have read this book many times and always manage to find something new. I think it is one of the finest examples of Austen's genius.
Listening to this narration by the incomparable Geraldine McEwan's has only served to enhance the experience, she does more than justice to Austen's skill and and ascerbic wit as a social commentator, with her wonderfully entertaining performance. Absolute Perfection on every level.
