Publisher's Summary

Initially published under the pseudonym Currer Bell in 1847, Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre erupted onto the English literary scene, immediately winning the devotion of many of the world's most renowned writers, including William Makepeace Thackeray, who declared it a work "of great genius."

Widely regarded as a revolutionary novel, Brontë's masterpiece introduced the world to a radical new type of heroine, one whose defiant virtue and moral courage departed sharply from the more acquiescent and malleable female characters of the day.

Passionate, dramatic, and surprisingly modern, Jane Eyre endures as one of the world's most beloved novels. This Modern Library Paperback Classics edition includes newly written explanatory notes.

What the Critics Say

    "Better then Any Movie!"

I found out that my wife was reading this book and it sounded like something that would help me pass the long miles. I drive truck for a living so an audio book really makes the day go by faster. I was not disappointed in the storyline at all. The main plot of this book is a good one and will keep the attention of almost any reader. After my wife and I had both finished the book we rented the movie. What a let down! If I hadn’t read the book I would have had no clue what was going on. So much was lacking from the movie that my wife and I found ourselves completely lost. In conclusion, Watch the movie if you’re of a mind too but for sure read the book!

    "Breathtaking writing, beautiful narration..."
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely! This is a truly superb audiobook. You walk with the characters throughout, your heart warms to their experiences and is broken by their hardships. It is a story that searches the depth of emotions but never leaves you deserted.

What other book might you compare Jane Eyre to and why?

I would think it difficult to compare "Jane Eyre" to any other work... It is much more the benchmark of literature than a mere classic example. If you want literature at it's most articulate, most embracing... There is none better than this "Jane Eyre".

What about Josephine Bailey’s performance did you like?

I enjoyed her ability to keep you in the character she was expressing at all time, you believe yourself to be hearing the most masculine, daunting, solid of males when they are speaking, and you don't question the gender you hear. And yet, when you are listening to the most feminine, childlike, delicate of women or girls, you are transported into the very presence of that child or woman. Very well narrated, very well enacted, superb work Josephine Bailey.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Embrace your spirit with openness and come walk through the breadth and depth of life, tragedy and elation, and find home

    "Simply the best!"
Who was your favorite character and why?

I really liked Jane for being so sensible and grounded - many heroines in novels of the time were either nutcases or plain obtuse (look no further than the flagship novels of Charlotte's sisters, "Wuthering Heights" and "The Tenant of Wildfell Hall"), whereas Jane is somewhere in between, managing to be true to her nature while still remaining logical. And, of course, Mister Rochester. Oh, Mister Rochester. *sighs*

    Which scene was your favorite?

So difficult to choose just one... I love all the scenes where Jane and Mr Rochester spar, exchanging tit for tat.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

Very well narrated, and good audio quality.

    "Delightful Tale & Narration"

Wonderful story: romance & mystery & redemption! It is written in beautiful vocabulary with easy rhythm. I chose Bailey's narration for its brevity by comparison with all others. As we listened though, we loved her style.

    "Beautiful, Engaging, Heartwarming, Heartbreaking!!"

Loved the narrator. She does a remarkable Jane & Mr. Rochester. I listened to it twice and will be listening to it again. The story never gets old and weary. One of my favourite books!!! Epic, timeless, rejoicing and triumphant. Update: I love this book. I keep coming back to it. I can't get enough of it. This version is amazing. Ms. Bailey is remarkable.

A very interesting read; the narration was superb and the story, although slow at times, was engaging and the characters well developed.
