In rural 1800s England, things go bad for a young matchmaker after she finds a man for another woman. Emma is considered by many to be Austen's finest novel. The book has been adapted countless times to stage, film, and television.

I've read Emma many time and watched several different versions, but I just couldn't stick to this audio version, the narrator just didn't capture my attention and I found her a little annoying to listen to
"Performance Needs Editing!"
I love Jane Austen and have listened to others that were very good. Jane Leclercq is ok, definitely not my favorite.
There are so very many mistakes here it ruined the listening experience. The amount of line re-readings alone makes this a terrible performance. It is not the narrators fault these weren't edited out, but I wish I would have purchased a more expensive version so I could have actually enjoyed it.
The narrator uses exactly the same voice for every character. Even though I have read this book many times, it made it difficult to follow.
"Excellent Audible Version"
This is an excellent audible reading of Emma, however in some instances it wasn't edited and the same phrase is repeated several times. The narrator is easy to listen to and I enjoyed this book.
"Bad recording, not edited"
Better reader, actually editing it. There were many, many repeated lines and the reading was so rushed that it made me anxious while I listened, not just through parts but the whole book.
The story was typical Jane Austen, who's other books I have thoroughly enjoyed. I don't think it was the story but the presentation. I'm going to look for another recording.
Definitely not. I have written down her name so that I don't make that mistake again. I am usually a very easy person to please but listening to this book was so painful that I want to warn others.
"Of course a classic, but poorly read"
This is one of my favorite Jane Austen novels, but I almost can't stand to listen to this version. The narrator's voice is annoying, she uses the same voice for all of the characters, and the recording is not edited at all, so you will often hear the narrator reading then re-reading the same passage, as if she thought her mistake would be edited out, but it never was. Very poor quality -- I thought Audible had some standards, but perhaps I'm mistaken in that.
The story was great, but I was annoyed by the repeating of sentences and words throughout. Especially in the second volume where one sentence was repeated 3 times. There was also a long pause in the same volume where you actually heard the page turn. Overall it was not edited well.
It was as if the production team stopped editing after the first volume. You can hear pages turning and the multiple takes by the performer. This was a very strange production.
This really needed some editing, the narrator would often repeat lines, at one point she tried a line 3 times then went blah and tried again. At one point the turning of pages was audible, and she would call Mr. Elton Mr. Elliott instead.
"Always loved the story ..."
But the voice of Jane Leclercq (by the middle of the 1st chapter) began to drone into a monotone with no inflection and when she read from male to female dialogue it was impossible to distinguish the changes in characters ... Didn't last into the 4th chapter !!
My fault for NOT listening to the Sample before buying !!!
"reading not edited..."
I guess you get what you pay for. lots if mistakes not edited out. at one point she flubbed the line and then said blablablabla...not edited out. some lines read couldn't distinguish who was speaking. not good at all.
not a bad story just realized I was not a Jane Austen fan really. it was hard to listen to ms. Bates drone on or even Mrs. Elton drone as well, and I didn't like how conceited Emma was about Harriet's happiness with whom she should marry
"poor story narrated in upspeak"
hundreds of years ago this might have been one of the better stories printed. that doesn't mean it meets the mark today. if you don't have an innate curiosity in relationships then you'll find this book very dull.
narrator got on my nerves too.
